Community Helpers, Jobs and Occupations

I´ve gathered a lot of old clip art to make this big collection. There are 315 flashcards from old jobs and occupations to the present. I searched all the vocabulary from the book series and came up with this list. I guess that you can use them with all the levels even adults.  I will receive requests to change names on any or to include some more. Notice that some jobs have different ways to write it. For example, Steelworker and Steel worker. If you google the word, both versions will show.

                         Flashcards Games and Activities

1.       Ask Questions. Hold up a flashcards and ask a question.

Teacher: What is he ?

Students: He´s a puppeteer.

Teacher: Where does he work ?

Students: He works at a Theater.

Students can also answer the questions on their notebooks.

2. Write a sentence.

Hand in a flashcards to a student. Ask him/her to write as many sentences as possible. Student: He is a Professor. He works in a University. He is a Math Professor. He is funny. He is playing with a yo-yo.

3. Story Group. Set a group of students together and hand each one a flashcard. Have them write a story all together that relates the people in the flashcards.

Story: The Scientist has a wife, she is a Manicurist. They love going to the Theater. The Mail carrier gave them the theater invitation to a play. They saw a Knight there.

4-    Alphabetical order. Challenge the students to write the jobs in alphabetical order on their notebooks. Make it a race. The first to do it correctly wins.

5. Descriptions. Students write only words to describe all the flashcard.

6. Play a Class Bingo game. Place all the flashcards that you are working with on the board.  If you are using 24 flashcards, then have the students select 8 or 12  to write on their notebooks. Write your 24 flashcards selection on separate piece of paper and put them in a bag. Call on each word to play BINGO!!

7. Make Venn Diagram.  Instruct how to make a Venn Diagram. Pair the students. Hand in 2 flashcards. Students make sentences with similarities and differences.

8. Word Association. Show a flashcard and have the students write as many words in an allotted time related to the job. Award appoints.

Pirate: boat, sword, mean, parrot, sea, money, treasure, island.

9. What am I ?  Have a volunteer student come to the front and sit. Hand him/her a flashcard without showing it to the class. Students ask Yes/No questions. The first student to find out the job on the flashcard will take the chair.

Questions: Do you work in a school ? NO. 

                    Do you wear a helmet ? No.

Do you wear a uniform ? Yes, a white jacket.

Do you use any materials ? yes, chemical items.

10. Analogy. Display the flashcards and have the students find the analogies in writing. Most of these jobs end with ER.

11. Show the numbers on the board and elicit the job on each one as you say the number.

Teacher: What´s number 10 ?

Students: He´s an ice cream man.

Teacher: What does he do ?

Students: He sells ice cream

12. Distribute one card to each child in class. Students have to stand up as they hear their card called.

13. Position the cards around the classroom. Name a job and have students point to the flashcard.

14.True or False. Show a card.  Say a sentence related to the card. Students show the Yes Puppet or the No Puppet. I put the file in the store... check it... it might be free.

Teacher: He is a car dealer. He works in a supermarket.

15. Mime. Select a card and show it to a volunteer student. That student mimes the job and the class has to guess what the job is.

 16. Dictionary. Hand in a flashcard to each student. Have them find that word in the dictionary and copy a sentence. Than at your signal, have the students hand in their card to another student and  continue looking up the job on the dictionary.

Ann. Touch the Pharmacist.

Samuel. Swap the diver with the tire repairer.

José. Bring me the witch.

Gabriel. Get the Veteran and give it to Mary.

Kay. Point to the table tennis player.

Lily. Circle the shopkeeper.

Peter. Show me the dentist.

Ian. Check the Engineer.

Ory. Find the Paleontologist. Show the Classroom Command to hint the student what to do.

      18. Who ?  Place the flashcards on the board and describe one, only saying a word. The children point to it and guess which one is it.

     Teacher: green dress.

Students: The Heroine!

19. Write several jobs  on the board. Have the students place the flashcards under each one.

 20.Cover a flashcard with a handkerchief, if it is white the better and ask Who is this ? Then proceed to remove the handkerchief and see if the class guessed correctly.

21. The Alphabet: Place plastic letters in a bag. Have a student draw a letter from the bag and all the students have to find all the flashcards associated with that letter. In this case , letter M.

22.Hold it up: hand in all the flashcards among all the students. Place the students in a straight line, if possible.  Say the job word in random order and each student must hold up their flashcard

Teacher:  Cleaner. Orchestra conductor, figure skater, mechanic, coast guard, policeman, producer, chemist, pilot, fortune teller, cleaner.

23. Questions. Place the flashcards on the board and ask questions.  The student  that answers correctly wins the card.  Award the students with the most flashcards at the end.

Teacher: Who has an Harp ?

Student: The Harpist.

Teacher: Who sells fish ?

Student: The Fishmonger.

24. A Hint. Have a flashcard in your hand and don´t show it to the class. Give some hints. 

Teacher:  I love colors. I work in houses. I use  big brushes

25. Slap. Place the flashcards on the board. Have two students slap the flashcard with a flyswatter as you name them.

Teacher: Cellist !

It is a good idea to complete all your worksheets and bring in a model of the activity. Students will know what is expected from them to do.

Ws elementary 1:  Students read and color as indicated.

Grab some bottle caps and have children place them where you tell them.

Teacher: red bottle cap on the sandwich.

Finish the indications.

Teacher: Where is the blue bottle cap?

Students: On the milk.

Teacher: Where is the juice ?

Students: Under the green bottle cap.

Have them cut apart the cards and make up their own game, it can be memory, match, board game, etc.

Worksheet elementary 2:

And a worksheet can be turned into anything. I made a mobile!

Worksheet elementary 3: pizza shapes. More activities to do with a worksheet. Tell the children that they are going to complete the complete the pizza slice with some shapes (give them the shape template or have them make the shapes), But there are some rules.

Place the cards on a pocket chart or the board.  They can only color the shapes in the colors on the cards( red, blue, yellow, green, orange), they can only use the shapes on the worksheet and that there shouldn´t be more than 5 of each shape in the same color. 

 Have the children complete the worksheet. When finished, play BINGO!

Have the children get a marker or crayon in black, instruct them that when you name the shape with number and color , if they have it , it should be crossed out.

Teacher: Four green circles. (Use the cards to call out Bingo!)

Worksheet 4. Sort items into food or drinks.

Food Unit Worksheet 6.  This worksheet is help express likes and dislikes related to food. Students cut from magazines pictures of the food they like and don't like.

Found a different kind of graph making on the newsletter of the www.Mailbox.com.

 I placed the graph paper horizontally inside a sheet protector. I tied yarn to each hole, so each child can place their own clothespin in their choice. The file will be free, the link is above.

Sort countable and uncountable food flashcards on the board. Students can do the same on their notebooks using the flashcard worksheet or from magazine cutouts.

Use the flashcards to introduce how to ask questions with countable and uncountable nouns.

 Draw a grid on the board and assign a number to each flashcard.

Have students write a sentence on their notebooks for each number. 

Review countable and uncountable nouns in a sentence.

Number 1: It´s a hot dog.

Number 2: It´s pizza.

Number 7: They´re hot dogs.

Teacher: Number 8 !

Students: It´s soup.

Teacher: Number 10!

                                                   Students: They´re sandwiches.

                                                      A book !

Fruit and Vegetable Theme

I joined both themes, 4 fruit (apple,banana,pear,orange) and 4 veggies
( onion, carrot, potato,tomato).

Nothing like flashcards to introduce the vocabulary words.

GRAPHING.Show the flashcards in random order and one at a time. Have the students stand up if they like the item on the flashcard. Have a student write the results on the board.

Teacher: How many students like apples?

Students: four students!

Use this Domino Game to maintain the learner´s interest.

The cutouts help to create the contexts in which the vocabulary words become meaningful. The students will participate in a conversation by expressing information.

You can print all the puzzle pieces in 11 different colored construction paper. Place a fruit or vegetable on each color.

Teacher: Where is the onion ?

Student: It is on yellow.

Teacher: What is next to the onion ?

Student: a potato on blue.

Teacher: pear!

Student: on orange.

Use the cutouts for introducing This/ These.

 And for sorting fruit and vegetables. Hand in all the cutouts to random students. Write fruit and vegetables on the board and tell them that at your signal they have to run to the board and place them where they belong.

And for more practice of the vocabulary words ,a match game. Make it motivating.  Provide more language practice using the cards in speaking and listening. It can be a game played in pairs asking simple questions. Student 1 who asks the questions has to place the cards in a Yes pile or a No pile, then see how many cards are in each pile.

Student 1: Do you like bananas ? 

Student 2: Yes, I do/ No, I don´t.

And for reading and writing.

Make a print of the cards for each group in class. Have the children in the group shuffle all the cards and place them face down on the table. One student turns two cards and reads or says what is on each card. If the cards are a match, he/she keeps them. If not, the cards must be returned to the table. All students must play. When all the cards are gone from the table, the students have to write a sentence on their notebooks with the cards they have.

Encourage students to interact with the shopping lists. Print all the cutouts or have play food toys available in class. One group will be the shoppers and another will be the sellers. You can have many shops and many shoppers. Hand in each student a shopping list card and the other group the food, not all the food has to be available in all the shops.

The buyers have to go to shopping.

Student Shopper: Do you have tomatoes?

Student Seller: Yes, I do. Here!

Student Shopper: Do you have bananas ?

Student Seller: No, I don´t. Sorry! ( moves on to another shop)

I know that you are always looking for worksheets. Here are 6 of them. Worksheets are good for individual quiet time. Go around asking questions about the pictures. Use them to review written grammar points.  Do your own worksheets and place them on the board so the students can do self-check.

Pocket charts are good for students that finish first and need more activities. If you don´t have a pocket chart just have them do the matching on a table or the floor.

Halloween ideas for Kindergarten English Language Learners

I looked up at old files and found some pictures to share.

Bat Necklace. I found the file at www.familyfun.com

I traced the pattern onto black construction paper with a white crayon. Then, punched a hole and added a yarn.

I used to subscribe to www.kidsoup.com. They have many printables. These bats  are so nice for hanging as a number sequence line using clothespins.

Bat word family. Got it at www.makinglearningfun.com

 From the same website. I made the legs out of fun foam and used a plastic black plate instead of a paper plate.

And this alphabet web is from the same site, as well. I used a shoe lace for the weaving.

Do some fun math. Pumpkin addition. Another wonderful page. www.childcareland.com. I made the numbers using bottle caps.
