Zoo animals have a body

                                Zoo Animals Body Parts!
Zoo animals have a body, and some body parts have a specific name. That I had to research,too. I came up with another table.
It is a good moment to review body parts vocabulary using the flashcards that are included in this resource. There is a letter size flashcard for each animal and a 4 in one page size as well. Here are the animals:

Idea 1: If you enlarge any given animal flashcard, place it on the board and write the body parts. I used the ones from the first part.
Have the students say which body parts are similar to a person and which are different.
Teacher: Which body parts are similar to ours ?
Students: eye, nose, mouth, ear, leg !
Teacher: Which body parts are different to ours ?
Students: whiskers, fur, paw, tail!

Idea 2:  Then place 2 flashcards, write the body parts, the similar ones in one color and the different ones in another. Talk about the difference between the animals. I suggest you read a little before doing this and use my research table and complete it even more.
Teacher: Which body parts are the same?
Students: head, eye, ears, legs, feet, tail, claws !
Teacher: yes! But, Which head is bigger ?
Students: The bear´s head is bigger.
Teacher: Which body parts are different?
Students: fur, feathers, snout, beak !
Teacher: yes! But, Which animal has fur?
Students: The bear has fur.
And continue with more questions!

Idea 3:  It would be time to label all the animals. Separate the students into small groups and hand in the animals, there are 18.If you need another one let me know to help. 
  

LABELING.The students have to color the animal and label the body parts. It would be interesting if they have access to internet to look for more information to label the animal correctly and to later present the animal to the class.
Idea 4:  Once all the labeled animals are up in the classroom. Play a guessing game.
Teacher: My animal has big two ears. It has a long truck and two husks. It has a small tail. It doesn't have a mane. It has feet but it doesn't have hooves. It has skin it doesn't have fur.
Students: It the elephant!

Idea 5:  Cut the animal flashcards in 2 or in 4.  I made these without borders or words. Hand them out randomly. Have the students stand up and walk around asking the classmates for the match to complete the card.
Student: Do you have the camel ?

Idea 6:  Cut the body parts in each animal flashcard. 

Set up a table on the board with only the body part word. Have the students come up and place each body part under each word.

Then ask questions pointing to each body part:
Teacher: Whose head is this?
Students: It´s the zebra´s.
Say a word and the students say the animal.
Teacher: flippers!
Students: penguin!
Or Say the animal and the students say the body part word.
Teacher: giraffe!
Students: legs!

Idea 7:  Animals have similar and different body parts. Have the students sort out the flashcards depending on a body part.
Teacher: Which animals have tails?
Students: Lions, monkeys, kangaroo!

Zoo Animals EAT !

I had to research and I came up with this list of what the zoo animals eat.
Activity 1: Place several flashcards on the board.
Teacher: What is number 1 ?
Students: It´s a giraffe.
Teacher: What does the giraffe eat? (Have the students guess and say what they know even if in the native language)
Then, start placing the food cards.
Teacher: The giraffes eat leaves, twigs and fruit. (Emphasize leaves, twigs, fruit).   Continue with the other flashcards.

Activity 2: And you can use these cards to review countable and uncountable nouns.
Teacher: What does the zebra eat ?
Students: grass and roots.
Teacher: What does the ostrich eat ?
Students: one insect, two snakes, and three lizards.
 (Teacher gives the explanation of why it is countable or uncountable)
Activity 3: Sort the food that the animals eat. Have the students make and write sentences. Give examples.
Teacher: The kangaroo and the elephant eat grass. They don´t eat fish.
I made a smaller set of cards for students to sort out at their tables.
I placed the cards in a small pizza box so they won´t fall.
I made a set for the students to make as a poster in groups. Just print and have the students start sorting out what the animals eat. Hang the posters to use for later.
It can used for speaking.
Teacher: What do penguins eat ?
Students: fish!
It can be used for writing.  Giraffes eat trees, leaves and fruit.

Zoo animal move activities for Elementary ESL

Practice 1:  Display the animal flashcards on the board. Ask the students how each animal moves as you point to each one. Write the verb. Have some students come to the front and imitate the animal movement.

Teacher: How does the penguin walk ?
Students: It waddles. ( A  student performs the movement)

Practice 2: place all the animal flashcards on a pile on your desk. Have a student come up to the front and pick one. Have him/her imitate the movement of that animal. The class has to ask questions to find out the animal.
Students: Is it a lion ?
Imitator: NO!
Students: Is it a penguin ?
Imitator: YES! (and shows the flashcard)

Practice 3: Tell students that the animals have specific characteristics, actions that they can do. Some verbs will be common but others will be new. Here´s a list to help out.
Then place two flashcards on the board. Ask the students what the animals are doing. Write the verb and ask questions.
Teacher: Can the bear climb trees ?
Students: Yes, it can.
Teacher: Can the elephant climb trees ?
Students: No, it can´t.
Practice 4: Animals have same abilities. Sort them out.
Teacher: Which animals can walk?
Students: the gorilla, the monkey, the hippo and the ostrich.
As a lot of practice has been done on the board, it´s time to move to small groups. The cards are small to fit a table. Students in pairs have to match the animal word and the action verb to each picture.
Individually, students can make this file folder activity to wrap it up.

Zoo Animals Flashcards

Zoo Animals Flashcards 1: Write the word zoo on the board and ask students the name of zoo animals they know. Start putting the flashcards on the board as they say the word, as in a mind map.
Teacher: There is a bear in the zoo.
Have students make similar sentences.

Zoo Animals Flashcards 2: Make several copies of the flashcards to use them for plurals and for the next structure.
Teacher: There are two pandas in the zoo.
Have students make similar sentences.
Make sentences using some and any.
Teacher: There are some elephants.
Students: There aren't any zebras.
Ask questions:
Teacher: Are there any giraffes?
Students: No, there aren't any giraffes.

Ask questions:
Teacher: How many hippos are there?
Students: There are three hippos.

Zoo animals Flashcards 3: Place the flashcards on the board and write a number under each one.
Teacher: What is number 1?
Students: It´s a snake.
Teacher: Is number 2 a camel?
Students: Yes, it is.
Teacher: Is number 3 a tiger?
Students: No, it isn´t. It´s a lion.
Teacher: What color is number 4?
Students: It´s green.
Then, have the students write questions.

Questions: What color is the snake?, Is the camel running ?, What do lions do ?, What do crocodiles eat ?

Zoo Animals Flashcards 4: Have the students make a list of the animals that they have seen in real life. Then play Bingo using the flashcards. The student to first cross out 6 words wins.

Zoo Animals Flashcards 5: Place the animal flashcards on the board in random order. Have the students order them by size.
 Ask questions:
Teacher: Which is the first animal?
Students: The elephant.
Teacher: Which is the second animal?
Students: The giraffe.
Teacher: Which animal comes next?
Students: The camel.

Zoo Animals Flashcards 6: Run to the card. Place all the flashcards on the board in random order and disorganized. Divide the class into two or more teams. Call out an animal. The first student to touch with a pencil or pen  the correct one wins a point for the team.

Zoo Animals Flashcards  7: Listen and stand up! Distribute all the flashcards to all the students, you can even give out more than one. Call out an animal and the student who has it must stand up and say the word. That student can´t sit down again. Play until there is one student left, who is the winner.

Valentine´s Day Resources and ideas for ESL-ELL teachers


First of all I made flashcards. I know that you will find many ways to use them. I made the one flashcard per page version, another version that has two flashcards per page and one more that is 8 flashcards in a page. That is a lot to choose from.

Idea 1: Place all the flashcards on the board. Ask the students to sort them by food, things and people.
Then ask them to write an adjective next to each word.
Idea 2: A cheap idea for Bingo! Just place all the flashcards on the board. Tell the students to write five or more words from the board on their notebooks.  Have the words written on small pieces of paper and put them into a bag. Have a student be the helper and pull out a piece of paper with the word on it and read it to the class. Place a check mark next to each word read. If the student has the word written down he/she must cross it. The first student to cross out all the word calls BINGO!

I have seen lots of lap books but instead I created a game folder.

It has basically three resources that can be glued inside the folder. I used CD envelopes because of the transparent window. It has a board game, a Mini book and small flashcards.
I made some decorations for the folder.

The mini book is for the students to color as they read and then put it together as a book to take home and read to the parents. It has tracer sentences.
 I also made a teacher´s version of the mini book as a class reader.
 Students can look at the pictures for a clue as you read. Ask the students, which is the most common word in the reading, and what is most common color. Do echo reading, as you have students repeat after you and point out in their own mini books.
A cute board to play as many times as the students want. 

The game pieces are from the cute clip I bought. I had to include all of these animals. I used clip binders to make the pieces stand and they are easy to store.

This last resource can be used as worksheets, mini flashcards or create a mini dictionary. Students can play some games by themselves or in small groups. Here are ideas:
Game 1: The tower game. Students take a card out of the envelope and say the word and start building a tower by placing one on top of another. All the words that he can´t read have to be put aside. Students can play together by building a bigger tower with all their cards.
Game 2. Order the flashcards. Hand in a small of several flashcards and have the students order them accordingly.
Game 3. Guess the flashcard. Have several flashcards in your hand. Students should display all their flashcards on their desk. Start by describing a flashcard without showing it to the class.
Teacher: I can eat it. It is delicious. It can be brown or white. It comes in a box or in a package.
Students have to guess and turn around that card on their desks. Then, show the card to the class. Students see if they guessed or not.
