These printable simple past games provide engaging practice with both regular and irregular past tense verbs while encouraging students to speak, listen, read, and spell. The activities include different ways to review the target grammar, from board games and verb card games to Spelling Bingo. These games are especially useful for the production part of the lesson plan.
This Simple Past Board Game is a fun way for students
to practice using regular and irregular verbs in the past tense. Students take
turns rolling the dice and moving their marker along the path. When they land
on a picture, they identify the action and say a complete sentence using the
verb in the simple past tense. For example, if a student lands on the picture
of someone playing soccer, they might say, “He played soccer.”
Encourage students to listen to one another and help
check whether the correct past form has been used before the next player takes
a turn. The game provides meaningful simple past speaking practice.
Simple Past Question and Answer Card Game
Divide the cards into two decks and give one deck to
each student. Students take turns drawing a card and using the action shown to
create a question in the simple past tense. They can ask a Yes/No question,
such as “Did he play soccer?”, or create a Wh-question, such as “What
did he play?” or “Where did he play soccer?”
The other student listens and answers the question
correctly. If the answer is correct, the student wins the card and keeps it.
Then, students switch roles and continue playing. At the end of the game, they
count their cards, and the student with the most cards wins.
This interactive Simple Past speaking activity gives
elementary ESL/EFL students meaningful practice with questions with did,
Wh-questions.
Spelling Bingo is a fun way to review simple past
verbs while practicing spelling, reading, listening, and vocabulary. Before
starting the game, display the verb cards on the board or on a poster so
students can see all the verbs that will be used. Students look at the cards,
choose 10 verbs, and write them on their blank Spelling Bingo template.
Once everyone is ready, shuffle the verb cards and use
them as calling cards. Call out one verb at a time without showing the card.
Students listen carefully, find the verb on their Bingo sheet, and mark it if
they have it. Continue calling verbs
until a student completes the required pattern and calls “BINGO!” Check the
student's words to make sure they have been spelled correctly.
