Science of Reading Activities for the Going to Future Plans Unit

The Science of Reading highlights the importance of providing students with opportunities to connect spoken language, vocabulary, decoding, fluency, and comprehension.

This Going to Future Plans resource includes a one-page reading passage designed especially for young English Language Learners. The reading provides meaningful exposure to the target grammar and vocabulary while supporting comprehension, sentence recognition, and fluency development.

 Comic Strip Echo Reading

Project and/or hand out the printable comic-style reading passage and read the first speech bubble or panel aloud. Students follow with their fingers and repeat the sentence as a group, copying your expression and intonation.

Then, continue one panel at a time. Stop after each panel and ask simple comprehension questions.

 

Word Sort: Verbs, Nouns, and Days of the Week

Students read the words from the reading passage and sort them into three categories: verbs, nouns, and days of the week. This activity helps students identify different types of words. The teacher will collect the answers on the boards for self- correction.

False Statements Writing Activity

Students reread the passage and write new sentences using the future with going to. They must create false statements by changing details from the story, such as the noun, place, day, food, activity, person, or time of the day. Since students can choose different details to change, answers will vary, encouraging creativity.

 

Students transfer reading to writing

 The students rewrite the comic-style story in the third person using he. As they read each sentence, they change phrases such as I am going to into He is going to and rewrite the information from Ben’s weekend plans. This activity helps students practice reading comprehension, sentence structure, pronouns, and the future tense with going to while making connections between reading and writing.

 

Students become language detectives

 They search for the repeated pattern I am going to + verb throughout the reading passage. They circle the words going to and underline the action verbs, such as play, eat, ride, visit, and read, helping them recognize how the future tense with going to is formed. This simple Science of Reading activity encourages students to notice language patterns.

Fluency Practice

Students read the passage three times and draw a star after each reading to track their progress. This simple Science of Reading activity encourages repeated exposure to high-frequency language structures.
