Pets at School is a hands-on resource filled with flashcards, small cards, printable games, and worksheets that help students speak, describe, and build sentences with confidence. These flashcards make vocabulary learning clear, visual, and engaging for young English learners, useful for oral language activities.

Use as Action Flashcards. Students write simple actions for verbs related to each flashcard, it can be in simple present or present continuous.

Grid Description Activity.
The teacher places the Pets at School flashcards on a letter–number grid and calls out a combination (for example, B2). Students look at the board, find the correct picture, and describe it using a simple sentence such as, “The dog has a yellow pencil.” This activity builds vocabulary in a fun, interactive way.

Question & Answer Flashcards

The teacher shows a flashcard to the class and asks simple questions. Students answer orally.

• Teacher: What’s this?
  Students: It’s a cat.
• Teacher: What color is the cat?
  Students: Brown.
• Teacher: What does the cat have?
  Students: A calculator.
• Teacher: What color is the calculator?
  Students: It’s blue.

To finish, the teacher models a complete sentence and students repeat:
“The brown cat has a blue calculator.”

There are also school items flashcards that can be used on their own to review and reinforce vocabulary.

Small Cards Grammar Activity: Possessive ’s

Using the small cards as the teacher models the sentence and students repeat.

• Teacher: It’s the dog’s backpack.

Students repeat and then try with other combinations:
It’s the cat’s book. / It’s the dog’s pencil.

Practicing the possessive ’s helps students understand ownership in English.

Writing with Small Cards Activity

Each student receives one small card. Students look at the picture and write a short text describing it. This activity encourages students to observe carefully, practice writing, and use complete sentences based on visual support.

These worksheets give students structured practice to reinforce the vocabulary and sentences introduced with the flashcards.

Students read the simple sentences and color each school item using the correct color. This worksheet helps learners practice reading comprehension.

Students read the sentences and color each cat and school item according to the information given.

Students read the clues, match each picture to the correct number, and complete the sentences by writing the school item and its color.

Students read the prompts and complete the sentences by identifying the pet, counting the crayons, and writing the correct color words. Also, practice: There is/There are.

Students read each question and answer using Yes, it does or No, it doesn’t, based on the picture.

Sorting Cards Activity
Students sort the picture cards into the correct pockets by matching each pet to its school item. As they place the cards, students say the word or a simple sentence, such as “The dog has a pencil.”

How to Prepare the File Folder Sorting Activity

1.   Start with a standard file folder and open it flat on the table.

2.   Print the pocket (envelope) templates and cut them out in advance.

3.   Apply glue only along the left, right, and bottom edges of each pocket.

4.   Glue the pockets onto the file folder, making sure the top remains open so cards can be inserted easily.

5.   Let the folder dry completely before use.

 Christmas Flashcards Snowglobe Hunt & Count (Movement Game). Hide the snowglobe flashcards around the room. Students walk with mini number collectors (printable sheet with a blank snowglobe). When they find a card, they: Say the number out loud and then, write the number in the snowglobe printable. Give the students a Time challenge — find numbers 1–20 in 2 minutes.

Students will place the flashcards in number order on the board. use for Chrtistmas centers or circle time.

Young learners need repeated, hands-on practice to understand numbers beyond 10. Counting shells on a sandcastle gives students concrete, visual support as they learn to recognize quantities, compare numbers, and count accurately. This boosts students’ language comprehension while practicing math. All materials are ready to print — just cut & go!  

Flashcards are flexible and allow teachers to create many short, meaningful tasks without needing to prep more materials.

Number Recognition Drill. Match the Beach Numeral to the Sandcastle. Students work individually or in pairs to match the number flashcard to the sandcastle quantity card.

 

Ordering Activity

Use one set of printable number cards for ESL kids at a time: Students place numeral cards in order from 1–20.

 Give students bingo sheets with numerals or quantities. Flash the opposite card (sandcastle or number) as the calling card.

Fly Swatter Number Game

Place several of the sandcastle quantity flashcards and numeral cards on the board. Call out a number or show a flashcard, and students race to swat the matching card with a fly swatter. This game helps learners strengthen number recognition.

Flashlight Reveal

 Use a flashlight behind the covered card to reveal the hidden sandcastle or numeral. When they see the image appear, they say the number out loud. This adds a fun element of surprise that keeps students engaged!

Use for the grammar point: There are nineteen shells in the sandcastle.

Listen and Color – Beach Numbers Worksheets. Students listen to the teacher call out a shell number and its color, then find the matching shell in the sandcastle and color it correctly. The second page reinforces learning as students independently complete the color sentences for numbers 1–20.

Follow the Code – Write the Numeral. Students follow a simple color code to identify how many shells are in each sandcastle. After coloring the shells according to the instructions, students write the correct numeral beside each castle.

Match the Number Words. Students look at the number words in the center of the page and match each one to the correct numeral around the sandcastle border. They draw a line from each word to its corresponding number.

Numeral–Word–Quantity Matching Cards

 Students use three types of cards: the numeral, the number word, and the sandcastle with the matching quantity of shells. They cut out the cards and work at the table to match the three pieces that belong together.

Students can work individually, with a partner, or in small groups to complete each matching set. Great for centers, early finishers, and hands-on number practice!

Beach Counting File Folder Game

Turn your printable cards into a reusable Counting File Folder Game that students will enjoy using again and again! This low-prep activity is perfect for reinforcing number recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence in an engaging, hands-on way.

Simply print, laminate, and glue one of the three sets inside a file folder:

• Numerals (1–20)
• Number words (one–twenty)
• Sandcastles showing shell quantities

Keep the remaining set as loose matching cards inside the file folder pockets. 

Students look at each card and match it to the correct numeral, number word, or sandcastle with the corresponding number of shells. Because there are three interchangeable sets, you can easily vary the activity to provide additional practice throughout the year.

Spin and Cover worksheet

Students use the spinners to generate a random number, then look for the matching sandcastle on their worksheet. They cover the correct sandcastle with a counter, token, or small manipulative or color. Players continue spinning and covering until all the sandcastles are matched.

Beach Number Board Game

  Students roll the dice, move their game piece along the colorful path, and identify each number they land on. Perfect for math centers, small-group rotations, or partner games.

Number Word Building

 Students use the letter tiles to complete number words. They look at each card, identify the missing beginning letter, and place the correct tile to spell the number correctly. This activity helps learners number vocabulary in a hands-on way!

Shell Number Match

 Students choose a numbered shell and place it on top of the matching number word in the sandcastle. They continue selecting shells until the entire castle is covered. This hands-on activity helps learners connect numerals with number words.
