School unit flashcards for ESL students

I updated the school unit flashcards. I thought that adding more words and using nicer clipart would be a bonus for teachers. Many of you have bought it and now you will have both versions. If there are words that you would like me to add, let me know.

Flashcards with visuals that provide clear context. If your students are a little more advanced review there is and there are. Divide the board in two and write the phrases. I used pencil and books.
Teacher: There is a pencil. There are books.
Students can find more flashcards to make more examples.

Flashcards  that are perfect for whole-class activities, small group instruction, centers, and independent practice.
I always find labeling fun. You can do one the board as an example. 
Label the body parts, clothes and school objects.(Labeling)
Teacher: name the body parts.
Students: mouth! Eyes! Leg!
Teacher: name the clothes.
Students: dress! shoe!
Teacher: name the school objects.
Students: lunch bag! backpack!

 Improving their speaking skills in a natural way. Then, assign red for body parts. Ask students to name all the body parts and you circle them. Do the same for clothes and school objects.


Students can do the same using the flashcards. I placed the flashcard into a plastic sheet to go on paperless. Have the students use a blue whiteboard marker for labeling the body parts as they practice pronunciation.


Then, use a black whiteboard marker for labeling the clothes and the school objects.

Flashcards 3. Select a letter of the alphabet and have the students say all the words that start with the letter. As they name the word place the flashcard on the board. Then, have the students do the same on their notebooks with another letter. I chose letter P for this example.

Flashcards 4. Order alphabetically. Write the letters from A to Z on the board and the students find the flashcards to place under each letter.


Flashcards 5. Classroom Monsters. Give a flashcard on a plastic sheet to each student and have them create a monster. I did this one with scissors. I added hair, eyes, nose, mouth, shoes. I guess students are more creative than me, but it will work to show the students the task before they start their own. Students can show their work to the class.
Student: This is my scissors monster. It has black hair. Its eyes are blue and big. It is happy. She is wearing shoes.


Flashcards 6. Sorting the flashcards into categories. I wrote these categories on the board. Students find the flashcards for each category.


Flashcards 7. Name the flashcard. Make a grid on the board using the flashcards. I did this simple one as an example for you.
Teacher: C3!
Students: pencil case!

Flashcards 8. Related words! I placed the pencil case flashcard in the middle of the board. Have the students name all the things that a person can find in a pencil case. As they name the words, place the flashcard or write the word. This is like doing a mind map.

Flashcards 9. Use puzzles when working with the little ones.

Numbers 1 to 100 for ESL Learners

Let’s start with the Number flashcards that I made with the words. 
numbers from 20 to 100

And flashcards without words.
dictation numbers 1 to 100

Use the fly swatter to play with the flashcards. or do this Speaking activity. Hand in a number flashcard to each student. At your signal have them order themselves. Then, have them take a step and say their number on the flashcard.
Student: I am number 85.

Counting Numbers by 10s. Place all the flashcards on the board. Say all the numbers and have the students notice what is common to almost all the numbers. TY-ending. Say a number and have a student come up front and touch the number and say the word.
Teacher: sixty, eighty, twenty!
Have the students write the numbers on their notebooks as they see on board.
Dictate numbers: 60, 40, 20, 50, 90, 10, 20,70, 100

Have the students learn about equations. Place the number 80 flashcard on the board, the add symbol, then number 10 flashcard and the equal symbol and the ninety flashcard. Read the equation. Make more examples for the students to read. They can also make more examples on their notebooks.

20-100 numbers

Place the following pair of flashcards on the board. Point to each pair and stress the difference between each.
Teacher: four-teen and for-ty
Say the teen number and the students the 10s number.
Teacher: sixteen!
Students: sixty!
Numbers and prepositions. Place 9 random flashcards on the board and ask questions.
Teacher: What number is on 10?
Students: 78
Teacher: What number is under 10?
Students: 63
Teacher: What numbers are next to 10?
Students: 26 and 32
The students can play the same game with their small cards.
100s chart with Number, Colors and Letters flashcards. I saw a similar idea on an old book and thought I could make one that can be used in the classroom and a small version for students to play in small groups. Place all the colors flashcards horizontally and the letters cards vertically and fill in with the numbers flashcards.
Teacher: F ! blue!
Students: 57!
Teacher: 88!
Students: I! green !

Place the people flashcards on the board. Ask questions.
Teacher: Who is number 46?
Students: Erick!
Teacher: Rick!
Students: 29!
Teacher: Is Mandy number 54 or 24?
Students: She is number 54.
Review There is structure. Place all the crayons flashcards on the board in random order.
Teacher: There is a yellow crayon! What number is it?
Students: It is number 24.
Have a volunteer student model the sentences and the class will answer.

Nature or Garden Theme for Elementary ELL

Use the Flashcards for Speaking activities. 

Place several flashcards on the board and write a number above each one and ask questions.
Teacher: What is number 3 ?
Students: It´s a plant.
Teacher: Is number 4 a cactus ?
Students: No, it isn´t. It´s a tree.
Have students make sentences.
Students: Number 1 is an acorn.
Have students draw the nature items and write sentences on their notebooks.
This is an acorn. This isn´t a stick.

Students can talk about numbers. Write the numbers 1 to 6 on the board. Have  2 students come to the front and place the flowers flashcards under the corresponding number.
Teacher :How many flowers are there ? Pointing to number 1
Students: one. One flower.
Have the students continue counting.
Students: Two flowers, three flowers, four flowers, five flowers, six flowers.
Teacher : What color is flower number 1 ?
Students: red.
Teacher: It´s a red flower.
Students: It´s a red flower.
 Continue with all the other flowers.

I found these great clip art for There is and There are sentences.
Place one or more on the board and model the sentences.
 Place more flashcards on the board for the students to say what they see.
 Then hand out all the other flashcards and have them make sentences on their notebooks and share with the class.
Review prepositions with the flashcards. Write the prepositions on the board and have the students sort the flashcards.
Ask questions:
Point to the first flashcard,
Teacher: Where are the flowers ?
Students: They are on the cactus.
Point to the second flashcard,
 Teacher: Is the butterfly on the flower ?
Students: Yes, it is.
Have students make and write a sentence for each flashcard.

And some Verbs related to the theme. Select the flashcards that you want to students to come up with phrases. Place them on the board and start from the picture.
Teacher: What is he doing ?
Students: He is planting a tree.
Suggest that he can plant any kind of trees. Have them think of other trees and write their answers.
Students: an apple tree, a big tree. They may come up with diverse answers.
 Here are the Verb related flashcards

With the flashcards you can have the students classify them into verbs or nouns.
Place a flower flashcard on the board, review the parts of the plant that the students remember, if not, place the flashcards on one side of the board to remind them.
Draw an arrow with the words for each part of the plant. Ask them which parts are missing, they might have to say the roots and the seed. Draw them under the flower. (LABELING)

As dictating all the color for each part of the plant, which is a good listening exercise. I had each word cut out and each part. Then the students had to line the words in alphabetical order and glue the part next to each word.

If you want to go further with the verb planting. I suggest you do, because you can introduce the words, first, then, next and finally that can be used for writing a text in the future.
Teacher: First, get the flower seeds.( emphasize the word first, use your finger as in number 1)
Then, bake the seeds with a little salt .( emphasize the word then, moving your hand or finger forward)
Next, put the seed in the soil.( emphasize the word next) Ask students, what does the flower need to grow. Show them the flashcards of soil, sun and water.
Finally, watch the plant grow.( emphasize the word finally by showing with your hands the end.)

And the trees change within the seasons. Remember that some countries don´t have all the Seasons. It is good to review the Seasons with the trees and see how they change.

Some games to end the theme.

First, a board game. I made one with the most common words and a blank one for your or the students to fill out with the words that will be playing.I added 8 game pieces. The students can select who or what they want to be at the game. I make the pieces stand by placing them in a binder clip.
And the other game is the traditional Bingo. I added the Bingo grid but you can do the Bingo List on their notebooks. I like this kind of game to practice Spelling.But for a twist I got a flower pot which I turned into a pocket. I used the flower template to make the flower words and glued them onto a craft stick for Bingo calling.
