Family & Halloween-Themed Learning Experience 🎃for Elementary ELLs

This resource is included in the Family Unit resource:   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Activities-for-Elementary-ELL-1804475

Have fun teaching elementary English language learners with a unique blend  of culture, creativity, and language learning of Family and Halloween themes! 🎃👻 The kids are not only expanding their English vocabulary but also embracing cultural traditions.

I do have the Family Flashcards to use as Vocabulary Introduction. I am not adding them to this resource, but you can get them here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-8-6126315

Let’s jump into the Posters for each Family and introduce them using the words, Vampire, Frankenstein, Ghost as their last name: This is Brother Ghost.

And introduce more family members: That’s Sister Ghost.

Teach or review Halloween words like "house," "ghost," "tree," "bat," and more.

Have the students describe the family members using the Halloween Family posters. Example:

Family Small Cards.  Sort them by family members and even make a Family Tree.

Play Go-fish with the small cards. Print the set of small cards. Ensure each family member is repeated at least 2-4 times, depending on the number of players.
Deal 5cards to each player and the remaining cards go in a draw pile in the center.
The goal is to collect a complete Halloween family.
The first player starts by asking another player for a specific card they need to make a complete family. For example, "Do you have 'Father Vampire'?"
If the player being asked has the card, they must give it to the player who asked.
If the player does not have the card, they say, "Go Fish!" and the asking player must draw a card from the draw pile.
If a player makes a family, they place the cards face up in front of them and ends the game as a winner.

Playing the game video:

Use the finger puppets for Role-Playing where students practice conversations.

Print the template and have the students color and cut the Halloween Family members. Tape for securing the puppets to fingers

You can use the puppets for speaking like this.

Worksheets are a good practice.

If you want to do a writing activity, just have the learners describe the posters.

Present Continuous Small Cards for Elementary English Language Learners

This resource is found here:   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Present-Continuous-for-Elementary-ESL-4403402

Handling and manipulating the Present Continuous small cards can make learning more interactive and engaging for the learners.

Cards can be used in sentence construction. Students pick a card and form a sentence using the Present Continuous tense, such as "She is doing homework."

Divide a large piece of paper or board into a grid with rows and columns. I used ABC and 123, you can make yours to suit your needs. Glue the small cards.

Students can a write sentence per grid- A1- He’s jumping rope.

Students can do Acting.  B2: DRINK! I am drinking coffee!

You can ask questionsB1- Is she playing the guitar or the violin?

Students: She’s playing the violin.

Play BINGO. Students write 5 verbs or sentences from the grid. You call out the words or sentences. The first student to cross them out, wins.

Visual and tactile learning aids can help students better remember the structure and usage of the tense. Prepare a word display in an inflexible order. Just print the templates and assemble the display. I glued only the vertical spots on the horizontal structure. To put it together questions, just message me. Learners will move the strips to write the correct sentence to each small card.

Students can also write the sentences formed on their notebooks.

Furniture in the House Small Cards for Elementary ELLs

This resource is part of the House Furniture for Elementary ESL, at my store:

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/House-Furniture-unit-for-Elementary-ESL-3420723

The furniture small cards can be used in various interactive activities that you will check out in this blog post. These cards are easy to carry from one classroom to another.

Print and have these flexible teaching tools for your class.

Listen and draw the furniture items. Practice the furniture vocabulary with cards. It will help reinforce vocabulary through repetition.

Teacher: Lamp! Draw a lamp.

Take a look at the video:

Write the word. The small size of the cards helps maintain learners' focus on individual items. I used letters stickers to write the words that are on each small card.

Students can also draw pictures to illustrate each word.

Have the students say sentences as a speaking activity. Check the video:

Show me the furniture. Teachers can quickly assess students' knowledge with this easy activity.

Place several small cards on the board or table. Hold up a furniture piece flashcard. Ask the students to find the same matching one and say a sentence: It’s a clock.

My example video.

Adjective-noun phrase using small cards
. This exercise can be easily adjusted to suit different proficiency levels in your class. Write adjective and noun words on small cards. Have the students write adjective words that you either dictate or that they write on the cards.

Students will match the item on the small card and the adjectives cards. They can write these phrases on their notebooks.

Here's the video:

Guess the furniture item. Cards facilitate group work, allowing students to practice speaking and listening skills collaboratively. Place the small cards on a table. Write the word that the students will guess on a piece of paper and hide it. Have the students ask questions to guess: Is it pink?

Teacher: No, it isn’t. It’s not a bathtub. (You can take away that small card)
Students: Is it round? Is it a circle?
Teacher: Yes, it is!
Students: It’s a clock!

This resource is part of Clothes Theme for Elementary ESL. It can also be used by the School Support English teacher. Click here:

Printing these small cards to teach clothes units to elementary ESL (English as a Second Language) students can be an engaging and educational tool. Check this guide to making these cards effective and interactive.

If your learning objective is vocabulary acquisition as having the students name the clothing items. Here are some ideas using the small cards in the resource.

Use the set of small cards to create this easy activity for identifying clothing. Cut the words out of each card and have them match to the corresponding clothing item. Each card included a clear picture of the clothing item and the English name of the item.

activity for identifying clothing

If you just want to review the vocabulary, use the check list provided.

Labeling is another good exercise practice the new words to describe clothing. This can aid in vocabulary building and sentence construction.

Another activity is to show cards to students and ask them to name the items the person is wearing.

describe clothing labeling

Students will write a description using the present continuous for any small card that you choose from more than any of the 600 cards that are in the resource. Start with the sentence structure: is wearing.

Have the students write short descriptive texts using the possessive 's to talk about the who owns a clothing item. Learning to write improves their ability to communicate effectively in everyday situations. This kind of activity helps students learn and remember the names of various clothing items. They can add colors, patterns, and sizes words.

descriptive texts using the possessive 's t

Here is another example to write personal identification description texts for what others are wearing.

Elementary English Specialist Teacher

Playing with the small cards will have the students master the sense of progress. They can add as many cards with the zoo animals as they wish. These small cards serve as a visual aid. Easy to associate the zoo animal word to the picture.

Print and cut the cards that you will need. There are more than 50 animals to choose from.

Capture your learners' interest and motivation with this simply easy game. Cut the word out of each small card and have the student match the picture to the word. It would be fun to do in small groups helping ELLs remember the new vocabulary.

a video!!

Sorting the zoo animals based on their characteristics. This exposure will build a more diverse and rich vocabulary use for your learners. The sorting will be into long/short legs, long/short arms, long/short tail, big/small ears,

Print the labels for the fries’ containers that you have previuusy gathered. Glue onto the containers and open them up for the activity.

Sorting activities are great for language practice, as students need to communicate their reasoning for why they sorted the zoo animals based on their physical characteristics.

This promotes speaking and listening skills, as well as vocabulary usage when the students discuss where to put the small card. Here is an example of long tools and short tail.

Students: The lion has a long tail. The rhino has a short tail.

Take a look:

Sorting activities can be easily adapted to meet the diverse needs of ELLs in the classroom. Pair students accordingly to have a fun and smooth game.

Student1: The gibbon has long arms.
Student 2: the racoon has small arms.

Provide clear instructions and model the sorting processes.
Teacher: The rhino has short legs!
The flamingo has long legs.

Sort the zoo animals with ears into big and small.

Finally, give feedback to your students about their sorting choices.

Here’s the sorting into long or short tails.
