Transportation Flashcards for Elementary ELL

This resource is included in the Transportation unit for Elementary ESL at this link: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Transportation-Unit-for-Elementary-ESL-4049752

The resource helps students learn essential transportation-related words to improve their vocabulary. These flashcards provide clear, visual representations of transportation vocabulary, aiding comprehension and retention.

The flashcards can be used in vocabulary drills such as description of the vehicles: The train is red.

Flashcards encourage students to answer questions about the different types of transportation.

Teacher: Are there two cars?
Students: Yes, there are.

Flashcards work for counting.

Make your lessons more dynamic and fun, incorporating the
sorting  the flashcards by land, sea, air activity.

Use any flashcards for small group or whole-class activities. Model an example using the demonstratives: this and that, these and those. Example: This is a boat and that is a ship.

Hand in several flashcards to the stduents and have them say their sentences.

Practice the grammar structure: “I like [transportation], but I don’t like [transportation].” to reinforce transportation vocabulary. Emphasize the” final s” to the nouns.

Teach and practice adjectives related to the vehicles (e.g., long, short, cheap, expensive, fast, slow, new, old, big, small).

Review the adjective words using your arms and hands. Stretch your arms for long and hold your hands closer for short. Practice by doing another sorting on the board, having the students select the corresponding flashcards for each adjective.

Equal Comparison (as…as)

Introduce the comparatives of adjectives (faster, slower, bigger, smaller). Teach the Spelling Rule: Add -er to the adjective: fast → faster

Practice the superlatives of the adjectives (the fastest, the slowest, the biggest, the smallest). Ask students to make sentences with other flashcards.

Students can physically move flashcards around to demonstrate prepositions.

Give students instructions: “The van is next to the bus.”

Ask where people are in the vehicles using the corresponding preposition.

Have students use the word “ by “ to describe how to go to different places.

The flashcards can be adapted for different verb tenses and structures.

Tell the students that we use these three main verbs for the vehicles. Place them on the board and create a mind map.

Teacher: I can drive a car.
Students: I can fly a plane.

Have students take turns making sentences answering with the present continuous.

Town, Community Helper and Transportation for ESL Part 2

This is the blog post for part 1.
Here is the link to the complete product:

I added a board game. I printed it on a letter size paper.

                                           Watch the video.
All the town items are in a road circuit. This game will not need a die. Each student will pick a transportation marker, which I taped an opened clip behind the card. The first student picks a card from the pile and reads the questions. Then, moves the transportation marker to the town place and puts the card on it. If the student knows the answer can place the card, if not, that student can’t place the card. The winner is the student that places the most cards on the road. Watch the video:

A teacher that bought this product said that the cards were too small. I appreciate when teachers say something to improve. I made the cards a little bigger and they work well for sorting.  The cards can be used for distance teaching by placing a craft stick behind each one and turned into flashcards. The actual flashcards that come in the product are classroom size.
It can be sorted on a table or use the pocket chart. Have the students make sentences.
Teacher: The zoo keepers are at the zoo. They have a jeep.
Just 4 Worksheets for sorting the town places, the community helpers or jobs and transportation.

First, have the students color the worksheets as you dictate each one, or even better have the students dictate how to color each one. Then, students write the word for each item in all the worksheets.
Teacher: The post office is purple.
Have the students cut all the cards from the worksheets. There are many things that you can do with them. I just thought of sorting.
Students can write sentences on their notebooks.

All the community helpers resources have been bundled.                 Check them out here.   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Community-Helpers-Unit-for-ESL-BUNDLE-6415647

Road game. I was looking for a game and found an interesting one on Pinterest, I adapted it for ESL. Simply print out as many roads you need and write the vocabulary words on each side of each road piece as in dominos, there must be 2 or more of the same word. Print the people in their vehicles and the signs. Have the students play as in Domino but the pieces will be the road items.

Prepositions cards. Use them for writing purpose or to play sentence association game.
