Teaching zoo animals and body parts vocabulary helps elementary ESL students describe animals and compare them in meaningful ways. Using flashcards and guided questions, students can identify similarities and differences while developing speaking skills.

Identify Animal Body Parts

Place a zoo animal flashcard on the board and write the parts of the body.
Hand in more flashcards and have the students do the same using your model.
Have the students say which body parts are similar to a person and which are different.
Teacher: Which body parts are similar to ours?
Students: eye, nose, mouth, ear, leg!
Teacher: Which body parts are different to ours?
Students: whiskers, fur, paw, tail!

Comparison Activity

Then place 2 flashcards, write the body parts, the similar ones in one color and the different ones in another. Talk about the difference between the animals. I suggest you read a little before doing this and use my research table and complete it even more.
Teacher: Which body parts are the same?
Students: head, eye, ears, legs, feet, tail, claws!
Teacher: yes! But, Which head is bigger?
Students: The bear´s head is bigger.
Teacher: Which body parts are different?
Students: fur, feathers, snout, beak!
Teacher: yes! But, Which animal has fur?
Students: The bear has fur.
And continue with more questions!

Write body parts words and have the students sort the zoo animal flashcards by their characteristics, such as tails, beak, horn, stripes, scales.
Animals have similar and different body parts. Have the students sort out the flashcards depending on a body part.
Teacher: Which animals have tails?
Students: Lions, monkeys, kangaroo!

 

Sorting by Body Features

Sort the animals by the tail using the adjectives flashcards long and short to describe the tail of the animals: The monkey has a long tail. The penguin has a short tail.

Sort the zoo animals by the length of the arms.

Sort the zoo animals by the size of the ears.

Venn Diagram

Draw a Venn Diagram on the board, have the students understand what it is for. Compare any two animals that you want. I made an example. Students should give you details of what they observe that are different between them and what is the same or common.

Order by size Animal 

Place the animal flashcards on the board in random order. Have the students order them by size.
Ask questions:
Teacher: Which is the first animal?
Students: The elephant.
Teacher: Which is the second animal?
Students: The giraffe.
Teacher: Which animal comes next?
Students: The camel.

Matching Game

Cut the animal flashcards in 2 or in 4.  I made these without borders or words. Hand them out randomly. Have the students stand up and walk around asking the classmates for the match to complete the card.

Student: Do you have the camel ?

Cut the body parts in each animal flashcard.

 Body Parts Matching Table

Set up a table on the board with only the body part word. Have the students come up and place each body part under each word.

Teaching the zoo unit provides a real-world context that is relevant to children's lives. The theme is across the science subjects. Many students might have been to a zoo and it will be fun to know their experiences.

Zoo Mind Map

Write the word zoo on the board and ask students the name of zoo animals they know. Start putting the zoo animal vocabulary flashcards on the board as they say the word as in a mind map.

Teacher: There is a bear in the zoo.

Have students make similar sentences.

Model demonstrative sentences using the ESL zoo animals for describing.

Teacher: This is an elephant. It’s gray.
Students: This is a lion. It’s brown.

Identify the Animal with this zoo animal activity

Place the flashcards on the board and write a number next to it. Ask questions: What is number 2?
Students: It’s a monkey!
Teacher: What color is number three?
Students: orange!
Teacher: is number five an elephant?
Students: Yes, it is.
Teacher: is number two a bear?
Students: No, it isn’t. It’s a, monkey.

Movement Game for the zoo animal vocabulary

 Run to the card. Place all the flashcards on the board in random order and disorganized. Divide the class into two or more teams. Call out an animal. The first student to touch with a pencil or pen the correct one wins a point for the team.

Listen and stand up! 

Distribute all the flashcards to all the students, you can even give out more than one. Call out an animal and the student who has it must stand up and say the word. That student 
can´t sit down again. Play until there is one student left, who is the winner.

Animals come in groups and use it for reviewing plurals.  Write a number next to each flashcard. Ask questions: Look at flashcard number 2. What are they?
Students: They’re kangaroos!
Look at flashcard number 3. Are they lions?
Students: Yes, they are.
Look at flashcard number 4. Are they zebras?
Students: No, they aren’t.

You can also use the cards for the practice of: There are two camels.

Play Yes or No!

Print and have ready the puppets. One per group or for each child. Students can also make their own puppets by gluing the cards onto wooden sticks of your preference.

You can ask questions for any zoo animals flash card: Is this a penguin?

 and the students will show the corresponding card puppet and say: 

Yes, it is !

As a variation, say statements like: This is a green penguin!

Use the puppets with any unit or theme.

Board games for Elementary English Language Learners

 Find a themed game board in each unit for teaching elementary English language learners. This kind of games are very engaging and interactive for your students. Use the board games as a review of the new vocabulary of the unit. It is a fun repetition of the words. The markers are also included with each board game. So, just grab the dice. Each space has a color. Players have to move along the path. When they land on a space, they have to say the name of that color and show an item in that color.

Create a motivated and positive classroom atmosphere, where students know that there will be an enjoyable learning game to wrap up the class. Players will describe the colors of the space they landed on besides the number: It’s an orange twelve.

Games help with memory skills that are crucial for English language retention. That’s another reason for printing and having the games ready to play. The objective of the game is to navigate through the various spaces on the game board, learning and practicing vocabulary related to different facial features.

Board games are a very informal way of assessing your student’s language proficiency in communicating. Are they using the language enough? Are they struggling to move along the board?

Players will navigate through the various spaces on the game board, answering questions related to family members with the cards in the game, light or dark green.

Another House unit activiti with a board game.Players will move their family members game pieces by correctly identifying the rooms of the house. The first player to reach the finish line wins.

Add a twist to the pet unit board game, but it works with any other theme. Players have to describe the pet they landed on in order to take that pet into their pet shop.

Students can do more than just identifying the word but saying a phrase or complete sentence in order to get the food card. The more food cards a player has, he/she is the winner.

Players move their game pieces around the Toyland game board, by completing challenges such as miming how to play with the toys they land on.

This set of board games helps students develop:

How to Use the Questionnaires

Students walk around the classroom asking their classmates simple questions. They record the answers on their worksheets and then share their findings with the class. Graphing for Elementary English Language Learners

 Include graphing in your lesson plan as a valuable teaching tool for your students to integrate English and Math.

Graphing can be challenging for English learners because it requires students to understand questions, categories, and results — not just numbers. Many students can count but struggle to explain information using language. These graphing activities support both math understanding and English communication by helping students talk about data in simple, meaningful sentences.  Check the video!                                            

It will enhance the understanding of mathematical concepts such as counting.

It will promote language development,using speaking and listening. Students will express themselves orally to show their opinion. Ask questions about the graphs

It will foster critical thinking skills where the students will compare, contrast and draw conclusions about the results.

It will provide an engaging learning experience. It is an interactive activity. Students will manipulate the data and interpret the results.

Adapt the graph to the different students that you have in class.

Check these ideas:

The favorite toy worksheet can lead to a speaking activity. They will draw their favorite toy and write a short text. When all the worksheets are done, have the children walk around and find another student or group of students with the same favorite toy. Stand together. Then, graph the results.

Teacher: How many trains are the favorite?
Students: two!

Graphing the favorite food. Do this one as a simple survey by placing the options on the board, using the flashcards: pizza, hamburger, chicken, fries, hot dog, salad. Create a bar graph on the board as they will come with their worksheet and place it under their option bar. Tally the results.

Here is another example with the pet unit to make a bar graph on the board, to add variety have the students write sentences about the favorite pet winner, such as: The favorite pet is the dog. I like dogs.

There is a worksheet to do a pet ownership graph. Students will draw the pet they have at home.  Grap showing the number of students who have dogs, cats, etc. And students with no pets at home.

The favorite room of the house can be graphed, but add the variant of the color. Tell your students to color the room of their choice. You will count the favorite room and the color as well.

Use the number of rooms of the house worksheet to graph. Discuss with your students that homes have different quantities of rooms. Graph by writing the numbers 1 to 5 for bedrooms basically which will vary in the results

Make a list of the school objects for the favorite items. They have to choose from the list and draw on the worksheet. Do the graph as survey. Each student will stand up with the worksheet and say: My favorite worksheets is the pencil.

Create a tally chart to record the number of votes for each school subject.

Give a twist to the graph for the favorite color. Place colored balloons at several parts of the classroom. After the students finish their favorite color worksheets. Have them find the balloon of their favorite color and stand right there. Tally the results.

Graphing gives students a visual way to understand information while using real language. Instead of answering abstract questions, learners can point, count, compare, and explain results using simple English. This makes graphing an ideal activity for ESL classrooms.

When to Use Graphing Activities with beginner to low-intermediate ESL / EFL students

• After a vocabulary unit  

• As a speaking review lesson  

• During math + language integration  

• For class surveys or opinion questions  

• As a calm, structured lesson after active games
