Shapes Unit for Elementary ELA

Use the flashcards for chorus work. Have the students say the shape word in a different voice.
Teacher: Circle! Say Circle in an angry voice.
Students: CIRCLE!!!

Flashcards 1. Cards on the desk. Give a group of students a set of shapes flashcards to spread on a desk. The student on the turn pick a flashcard to name it. If the group says it is correct, that student can take the card, if not, the student has to return it.

 Flashcards 2. Sort the cards by color.

Flashcards 3. Sort the shapes by number of sides.

Flashcards 4. Name a beginning letter and the students have to say the shape.
Teacher: S!
Students: star and shape.

Flashcards 5. Play Bingo. Have the students draw 10 shapes and color each shape in the 11 playing colors. Start calling the shapes using the flashcards.
Teacher: gray triangle.

Flashcards 6. Charades. Have a student come to the front and pick a card and draw it in the air and have the class guess the shape. The one the guesses comes to the front to continue.


I made the set of
shape hats. One set is with the shape included and another set is with the space for the shape that the students cut and paste on each hat.

Play games with the hats.
Option 1. Have the students stand up when you call a shape, the rest of the class sits.
Option 2. At your signal students stand up and run to find a matching partner and stand together. It can be the exact same shape in color or just the shape.
Option 3. Collect all the hats and without the students seeing put a hat on each one. At your signal have them walk around finding a partner by asking questions.
Students: Am I a square ?


Shape book. An easy traceable book to review colors, numbers and shapes and to learn sight words such as I , see. I made a puppet and placed a paper clip on the back so it can stand and be a reading companion.

Shape pockets. I found a similar idea on Pinterest. I made pockets out of each shape by printing them double and gluing the shapes leaving a space to insert the craft sticks.

Give the students the crafts sticks and the shapes separately and have them insert the craft stick into the corresponding shape by reading each one.
Or, hand in the craft sticks to one group of the students and the shapes to another, have them ask people in the other group if they have the match to their piece.

Brunch (breakfast and Lunch) Theme

More food related unit, breakfast and lunch!

It is a good idea to complete all your worksheets and bring in a model of the activity. Students will know what is expected from them to do.
Ws elementary 1:  Students read and color as indicated.
Grab some bottle caps and have children place them where you tell them.
Teacher: red bottle cap on the sandwich.
Finish the indications.
Teacher: Where is the blue bottle cap?
Students: On the milk.
Teacher: Where is the juice ?
Students: Under the green bottle cap.
Have them cut apart the cards and make up their own game, it can be memory, match, board game, etc.
Worksheet elementary 2:
And a worksheet can be turned into anything. I made a mobile!

Worksheet elementary 3: pizza shapes. More activities to do with a worksheet. Tell the children that they are going to complete the complete the pizza slice with some shapes (give them the shape template or have them make the shapes), But there are some rules.
Place the cards on a pocket chart or the board.  They can only color the shapes in the colors on the cards( red, blue, yellow, green, orange), they can only use the shapes on the worksheet and that there shouldn´t be more than 5 of each shape in the same color. 
 Have the children complete the worksheet. When finished, play BINGO!
Have the children get a marker or crayon in black, instruct them that when you name the shape with number and color , if they have it , it should be crossed out.
Teacher: Four green circles. (Use the cards to call out Bingo!)
Worksheet 4. Sort items into food or drinks.
Worksheet 5. Counting.

Food Unit Worksheet 6.  This worksheet is help express likes and dislikes related to food. Students cut from magazines pictures of the food they like and don't like.

Found a different kind of graph making on the newsletter of the www.Mailbox.com.
 I placed the graph paper horizontally inside a sheet protector. I tied yarn to each hole, so each child can place their own clothespin in their choice. The file will be free, the link is above.
Sort countable and uncountable food flashcards on the board. Students can do the same on their notebooks using the flashcard worksheet or from magazine cutouts.
Use the flashcards to introduce how to ask questions with countable and uncountable nouns.
 Draw a grid on the board and assign a number to each flashcard.
Have students write a sentence on their notebooks for each number. 
Review countable and uncountable nouns in a sentence.
Number 1: It´s a hot dog.
Number 2: It´s pizza.
Number 7: They´re hot dogs.
Teacher: Number 8 !
Students: It´s soup.
Teacher: Number 10!
                                                   Students: They´re sandwiches.

                                                      A book !

Feelings and Emotions Activities for Elementary ESL

The shapes and feelings book: here´s a book to review shapes and colors. Students will fill in the blanks with a feelings word and draw the mouth expression accordingly. There´s another version where students will also fill in the shape word. Nice to cover the vocabulary and grammar.
Emotions shapes printable book

The family and feelings book: students will review family members as they draw the mouth expression and write the feeling. This is also included in the family blog post and TPT unit.

Feelings Clip Board: use it in your literacy center for active learning. Students can independently put the clip word corresponding to the picture. They can practice the new words and solve the problem at his/her own pace.
I glued the word onto wood clothespin.

Monsters Feeling Book: There´s a colored version to be used as a reader.  
There´s a second version to be used as a coloring book. Students have to read in order to color the monster by reviewing facial parts and colors. It will give children the opportunity to practice coloring inside the lines with patience and improving motor skills. Students will have to focus on each part of the face. 

I included puppets to along to identify emotions and name them.

Word wall: Display the pictures and words on the wall or bulletin board. Use it before, after or during reading or writing activities. It can be used individually, small groups or the whole class as a permanent reference to the new words creating a rich print environment.

I am adding the flashcards.

Trace the word cards: children learn to read  and spell faster when they write with their hand. The benefit with extend beyond the childhood years by preventing writing difficulties in the future.

Pocket chart: this activity teaches sight words and vocabulary. I use a commercially made pocket chart and make all the cards in the same format so you can mix them accordingly to your class. The pocket charts are not used enough in the English class, in most Latin countries they are not even available. If you make one I´d love to see it.
