Seasons and verbs for ESL

In many books it is under the label of Seasonal Activities. This is the last blog post related to the Seasons Unit. I have posted Seasons and Months, Seasons and Weather, Seasons and Clothes, Seasons and Nature. Just continue scrolling the blog posts to check them out! Everything is under one product:
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasons-Theme-Resources-for-Elementary-ESL-1744981

It is also available here:https://www.bilingualmarketplace.com/products/seasons-unit-for-elementary-esl?variant=37168505684132

There are many verbs related to each Season. First, here are the flashcards.

Sort the Flashcards into Seasons on the blackboard.
Teacher: What season is this?
Students: It is Winter.
Teacher: What is he doing?
Students: He is building a snowman.

Place each Season Flashcard on the blackboard. Have the students look into all the flashcards and find the Activities(Verbs) that can be done in each Season.
Teacher: What season is this?
Students: It is Fall.
Teacher: What do we do in the Fall?
Students: Play with the leaves, sit on the pumpkins, rake the leaves, and walk.

Do the same with the other Seasons.

You can use many Verb Tenses with the flashcards. Start with CAN. Use the flashcards to model questions and sentences on the board.

                                        Or model Present Continuous.

Or you can introduce the simple past tense questions.
Maybe you can review the future.

As in all the Seasons Units, there is a Sorting Worksheet.

And just two worksheets.
Students complete the worksheet. Then have them cut each picture and glue next to the sentences on their notebooks.

The other worksheet will be used as a BINGO template as well. Using either the colored flashcards placed on the board or the small cards used for the sorting, students write the activities that can be done and the ones that can’t be done in each Season, completing the worksheet in an allotted amount of time, maybe 5 minutes. Some students will have more verbs than others, but that is the idea. Then, announce the BINGO! Use the colored flashcards to call the Verbs. The students will cross out the verb word if they have it written down. The winner is the first one to cross out all the words.

Can as an ability for ESL students-part 2

This is the second part of CAN as an ability theme. Read the first part here:

Watch the video of the complete resource:

The teacher’s flashcards were turned into student’s cards or small cards. I made a small version for endless activities.
Recycle old McDonald’s fries containers, add a label and sort the small cards.
Watch the video on how to play the game.
Or use the Monster that eats anything. I have used this Monster in several posts. I made it by gluing the printable onto a box and opened a slit for the mouth.
And let’s play scrabble!
More writing using a printable Ipad image. I placed in plastic sheet, used whiteboard colored markers to erase easily. Students grab a small card and write the word or sentences.
Students can write sentences on their notebooks using the small cards.
Sort the cards into Music or Sports ability verbs using the worksheet.
Worksheets that are fun are a good addition to your resources. I made these where students cut verbs from magazines that relate to an ability. They might have to use a dictionary to make sure it is a verb. If there are not any English language magazine available have them write the verbs they know that relate to them. Then have a talk about me session showing their work.
Girl 1: I can create many things. I like reading. I love pancakes.
Boy 1: I can photograph birds. I can talk to my friends. I can party tonight.

Or have students ask and answer questions with CAN.
I had punched on white cardboard several circles and thought of gluing the small cards onto them to make a memory game.
Craft stick writing. I wrote the pronouns on yellow sticks, the word can on orange sticks, the verbs on green sticks, other words such as a, my on red sticks and nouns on blue sticks. Then have the students write the sentences on the worksheet.

It is hard to find books with the target language so I made this one with Mr. Big Nose. I have made more versions with him on other blog posts.
For those extra minutes take out a game. Print the board game on cardboard. The game pieces are children. I usually place a clip or binder so it can stand. I made the cards for the question the size of a puncher.
Here is a video on how to play.

Can as an ability Flashcards and more for ESL students

The flashcards and more are here for the topic on how to express ability (CAN) or the lack of the ability (CAN´T):   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Can-as-an-Ability-Flashcards-and-more-for-ESL-4299251

Watch the video of the complete resource:

Introduce can and can’t using flashcards for no translation. I got carried away making flashcards that I came up with 120 Verb flashcards and more than 70 nouns flashcards to do lots of speaking activities.
A video of all the flashcards:

Show the students the flashcards and have them do the action.
Give each student a flashcard and at their turn, they have to say the verb, make the action and say the sentence.
Place the flashcards on the board and write a name under each one.  Have students say similar sentences.
Teacher:  Look at Zoe! She can fish.
Students: Look at Erick! He can bake.

Have several students come to the front and perform one of the actions.
Students guess what he/she can do.
Students: Gustavo can fly a kite.
Use the flashcards to ask yes/No questions. Use as many flashcards to elicit answers. Have students ask each other questions.

Place all the flashcards on the board and have the students use their printable worksheet to write on either side of the column 8 things He/She can do and 8 things He/she can’t do. Then play BINGO!

Place several flashcards on the board and ask questions. Students raise their hand and say I can. Write their names under each flashcard.
Teacher: Who can play the trumpet?
Zoe: I can.
Then ask questions.
Teacher: Who can make their beds?
Students: Vicky, Carol, Ximena, Peter, Oriana and Ian.
Teacher: What can Erick do?
Students: Erick can play soccer.

Review numbers and introduce a new structure. Place some numbers flashcards on the board and a Can flashcard under each. Model a sentence.
Teacher: Number 40 can scuba dive.
Students: Number eight can ski.
Teacher: What can Number 20 do?
Students: Number twenty can snorkel.

Place a flashcard on the board. I chose cook. Tell students that you can make longer sentences by adding more words and create a mind map.
Teacher: I can cook Italian food.
Students can add more examples and write them down.
Then, have the students ask you questions as you prompt the same or another flashcard.
Students: Can you cook eggs?
Give a point to each student that makes you answer with a yes!
They can also play by saying a sentence and then the next student says another without repeating the word and so on.
Student 1: I can cook lunch. Student 2: I can cook fish. Student 3: I can cook Spanish food.  The sequence ends when a student cannot add a word or phrase to cook.

Use the flashcards to show students how to add the words that they know to make compete sentences. Bake was my example and used the noun flashcards. They can make more examples on their notebooks.
Teacher: He can bake a cake. He can bake bread and a pie. He can bake cookies and cupcakes.
You can contrast two different verb flashcards and have students find Noun flashcards to make more phrases or sentences.

                                                I made 78 noun flashcards.

Use the flashcards to sort verbs and nouns. Divide the board in two and write the word: noun and verb. Give them the flashcards and students have to sort them.

An easy review using the fly swatter!

This is just the first part. Check the second part:
