Birthday Unit for ESL-part 2

Matching mat. I saw this idea on Pinterest and gave it a try. I liked it. It is a mat with all the vocabulary words and another one with the pictures. 

Place each mat into a clear plastic sheet. Do it any way you like. I placed the words in the plastic sheet and cut all the pictures to be placed on each word.
I thought that many things can be created using the pictures and words from the mat printable.
You can use as a matching game or Memory game.

I saw this idea on Instagram and grabbed my egg holder. Glue each card onto a craft stick. Cut a slit on each egg portion. Place all the picture cards and have the students look for the word craft stick and insert it next to the picture to match them.


Introduce the functional language  to give and to recieve a Birthday party invitation.
Students should learn how to write a birthday invitation and a card. I made the template but students can go farther and create their own cards.

I see that many teachers are using small cards that be used as puppets. If you cut the words out of the cards you can play a matching game.

Birthday Unit for ESL

        Birthday Unit Resource for Elementary English Language Learners

Let’s start by introducing: Happy Birthday! And the response: Thank You. Have the students sit in a circle and  say Happy Birthday ! to the student next to him/her and that student responds Thank you and does the same to the one next to him/her.

I made  the  ‘s wand  out of fun foam using the template in this product and glued it onto a thick craft stick. Use it to introduce: It’s Ann’s birthday.

Birthday Vocabulary Flashcards. Great for introducing the new party vocabulary and food .

Activity 1. Write the three words on the board: food, drinks and things. Have the students look through the flashcards and sort them out and place them where they belong.
Teacher:  name the flashcards under things.
Students: flower, candle, balloon, hat, present, lollipop.
Activity 2. Play the birthday game. Place 10 flashcards on the board and assign a number for each one. You can use the ten numbers as well. Say something about the flashcard and have the students say which one it is.
Teacher:  It’s round. You can eat it. It has pepperoni. It is big.
Students: Pizza!
Teacher:  What number is the pizza?
Students: Number 2!
Teacher:  What is number 1?
Students: It is a gift!
Teacher:  What color is the gift?
Students: It is pink and blue! 

For extra practice students can write sentence with a white board marker on the flashcards placed inside a clear plastic sheet.
Introduce the plurals of the nouns using the S,es,ies puppet. I made mine out of fun foam. You can make a puppet for each case and use it for any unit. 
Use the puppets and the flashcards to explain each plural case.
Teacher:  What is it?
Students: It is a hot dog!
Contrast!
Teacher:  What are they?
Students: They are hot dogs!

              Plurals lead to counting Birthday objects and food.
Teacher:  What are these?
Students: They are cookies!
Teacher:  How many cookies are there?
Students: There are six!
Have the students use the adjective noun word order: six brown cookies

And introduce the uncountable nouns using the flashcards. I would place the drinks which are usually uncountable unless in comes in a glass of juice, for example. I did those flashcards as well.

Finally, brainstorm Birthday party nouns with your students. Place the Birthday party flashcard on the board and make a mind map by asking them what should be at the party. Write down the words that you don’t have a flashcard for it. Then students can create their own mind map on their notebooks.
Teacher:  There are streamers.
Students: There are invitations.
Teacher:  There is a cake.

Ask students:
Teacher:  Peter, What do you want?
Peter: a cupcake.
Take the cupcake from the board and give it to Peter. Continue with more examples.
And done with the nouns, let’s move on to the verbs. Children do things at the party. Here are the flashcards.
Teacher:  Point to a flashcard. What is he doing?
Students: He is taking a picture.
Continue with more.

Use the verb flashcards for making collocations.Place the verb eat on the board and have the students find the flashcards to create the collocations.
Teacher: eat ice cream!
Student 1: eat corn dog !

When is your birthday? How old are you-part 3

Review the months of the year using the cards.
 I see that some book’s scope and sequence have the structure using only the birthday month. Have a student come to the front and pick the card of the month of their birthday.
Teacher: When’s your birthday?
Student: June.
Teacher: It’s in June. (Stress the word IN and write it on the board. Grab the month card of June and place it next to the word in)
Graph the birthday months of your class. Place the months of the year around your classroom. Have the students look for the Month of their Birthday and stand there.
Teacher: This is January. How many students have their birthday in January?
Students: one!
Continue with all the months.
Depending on the level of your students and the scope and sequence of your book, continue introducing the birthday date. But first, review all the ordinal numbers using the cards.
I prepared a worksheet for the students to notice the difference in writing the ordinal numbers.
Have the students match the ordinal number cards and the words cards as a review.

Then, let’s move on to the birthday date. Place the month and date of your birthday on the board and model for the class. Write the word ON.
Teacher: My birthday is on August 29th.
Have the students find their birthday month cards and say their sentence to the class.
Have the students write their birthdate on a piece of paper.
As you place the month cards around the classroom. At your signal have the students stand up and look for their birth month and stand there.  Hand them their birthday ordinal number.

Students can help create the calendar, just glue the proper heading and have the students research the days and complete the template.
Ask questions:
Teacher: When is Sara’s birthday?
Students: It on October 20th.
 Students write their name in the birthday date box.
More flashcards. I thought that extra practice is required for this structure. I made some children flashcards with birthdates.
Teacher: When is his birthday?
Students: It’s on June 28th.

Worksheets!
Worksheet 1 Questionnaire. Students walk around the classroom asking the questions and writing the answers.
Then, they cut and glue the worksheet on their notebooks and write sentences about the results of the questionnaire.
Worksheet 2. Dictate how to color each month as a listening exercise.
Teacher: Color June pink!
Have the students trace the date you say.
Teacher: April 11th!
Students complete their worksheet. Then, have the students cut each box and write a sentence.
Worksheet 3. Make a calendar. Each worksheet has an empty space for the month. Students cut the month of their birthday and glue onto the empty space. They also write the days of the month and their name on their birthdate. Finally, complete the sentences. You can do a show and tell to the class.
Worksheet 4. The same as the other worksheet, dictate the color of each month or even better, have an individual student dictate the color of each month. Then, students write sentences using his or her birthday.
Worksheet 5. There are Birthdays in the family!Students cut out and glue all the family members and write their corresponding birthdays on their notebooks.
I made an extra set of Family Birthday flashcards to review.
Worksheet 6. Ordinal Numbers Bingo. Students write any of the 31 ordinal numbers on the 9 squares. Use the Ordinal numbers cards to call BINGO!
Worksheet 7. More Family review. Students draw or cut out pictures of their family members and complete the worksheet.
