Emergent BIlingual Children

This Valentine’s Day material will help your student practice identifying numbers from 1 to 20 in a fun and engaging way.

Print the Valentine’s Day big flashcards if you have a large classroom. Play find the missing number flashcard on the board. Write a number word on the board and leave a space for the missing flashcard that corresponds to the following number. Play in teams to make it competitive!

Slap the Colored bears and say the Numbers.  Spread number flashcards on the board. Say a color, and two students go to the board and slap the correct cards saying the numbers. The winner keeps the card said correctly.

Teacher: green!

Students: twelve, five!

The small cards came handy to support vocabulary development by linking numerals with their corresponding number words. Just cut the word out of each card and play.

Missing Number Challenge. Arrange a few small number cards in a sequence but leave some out. Students take turns finding and placing the missing numbers in the correct spots.

The matching worksheet strengthens students’ ability to connect written number words with their corresponding numerals.

Can be used for independent work as they complete the number words on the worksheet.

The matching grid worksheets encourages students to focus on accuracy and problem-solving as they find correct pairs.

Bingo provides a fun, low-pressure way for students to practice numbers while staying engaged. Use the worksheet and the cards from the previous worksheet to glue onto the two grids provided. Hold up the number flashcards, and students mark off the matching number. The first to get a full row shouts "Bingo!" The grids can be used over and over again.  Students can glue the bears or the words.

The puzzle activity reinforces the connection between written number words and their corresponding numerals. It comes in just one page so students can play individually or in small groups.

Valentine's Day colors activities for esl

Valentine's Day is such a pretty Holiday!
I made this resource based on colors review.
valentine's day activities for esl

To introduce the Holiday, I made some puppets to greet each child. You can use them for almost anything in the class during this month. It is an art to be learned on how to get the most benefit from them.
Now, review colors. The same puppets can be colored. But I placed them into a fun foam crown that I made with a little pocket on the front.
Teacher: What color am I? Red?
Students: NO!! Green! You are green.
The Scrabble letters printed in pink and red can add up to review writing the color word for each heart.
I made these colored paper plates years ago and they work well for sorting.
and a little writing using the colored hearts.

I love making books for the Holidays! It is a cut and paste book with trace the sentence on each page.
To assemble it I found this cute idea on Pinterest and gave it a try. I thought it would be difficult but it turned out quite easy.Glue a piece of ribbon on the top of each page.
Glue the paper bags one onto another and place the paper with the ribbon into each paper bag.
To read each page the student has to pull the ribbon.

I added the character’s from the book to make puppets to make read alongs or for storytelling.

A simple and easy matching game. Students just color each heart in a color and match the heart to the word.

  Or use the worksheet.

Or assemble the OLD LADY that swallowed… a Heart, this time.
I used a cereal box.

I made a few coloring pages. Some are color by number.

 Others are read and color.

Valentine´s Day Resources and ideas for ESL-ELL teachers

First of all I made flashcards. I know that you will find many ways to use them. I made the one flashcard per page version, another version that has two flashcards per page and one more that is 8 flashcards in a page. That is a lot to choose from.

Idea 1: Place all the flashcards on the board. Ask the students to sort them by food, things and people.
Then ask them to write an adjective next to each word.
flashcards of adjectives
Idea 2: A cheap idea for Bingo! Just place all the flashcards on the board. Tell the students to write five or more words from the board on their notebooks.  Have the words written on small pieces of paper and put them into a bag. Have a student be the helper and pull out a piece of paper with the word on it and read it to the class. Place a check mark next to each word read. If the student has the word written down he/she must cross it. The first student to cross out all the word calls BINGO!

I have seen lots of lap books but instead I created a game folder.

It has basically three resources that can be glued inside the folder. I used CD envelopes because of the transparent window. It has a board game, a Mini book and small flashcards.
I made some decorations for the folder.

The mini book is for the students to color as they read and then put it together as a book to take home and read to the parents. It has tracer sentences.
I also made a teacher´s version of the mini book as a class reader.
Students can look at the pictures for a clue as you read. Ask the students, which is the most common word in the reading, and what is most common color. Do echo reading, as you have students repeat after you and point out in their own mini books.
A cute board to play as many times as the students want.

The game pieces are from the cute clip I bought. I had to include all of these animals. I used clip binders to make the pieces stand and they are easy to store.

This last resource can be used as worksheets, mini flashcards or create a mini dictionary. Students can play some games by themselves or in small groups. Here are ideas:
Game 1: The tower game. Students take a card out of the envelope and say the word and start building a tower by placing one on top of another. All the words that he can´t read have to be put aside. Students can play together by building a bigger tower with all their cards.
Game 2. Order the flashcards. Hand in a small of several flashcards and have the students order them accordingly.
Game 3. Guess the flashcard. Have several flashcards in your hand. Students should display all their flashcards on their desk. Start by describing a flashcard without showing it to the class.
Teacher: I can eat it. It is delicious. It can be brown or white. It comes in a box or in a package.
Students have to guess and turn around that card on their desks. Then, show the card to the class. Students see if they guessed or not.
