Fun Classroom Games to Teach Emotions to Elementary ELLs

This resource can be found here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Emotions-Unit-for-Elementary-EFL-2023631

emotions unit communicative approach

Games give students repeated exposure to the target vocabulary (happy, sad, angry, etc.) in a way that feels natural and engaging instead of repetitive drills. Many games require students to talk, listen, and respond. This encourages oral language development and gives them confidence in using English naturally.

Since the board game path has only emotion words, students need to match to emotion cards to stay in their spot.   Students roll the die and move along the path. If they land on “angry,” they must find the matching angry picture card. If correct, they stay; if not, they move back one space.

Emotions board game

This Emotions Domino Game is designed to build vocabulary, practice reading, and make connections between words and pictures. Students match emotion words like happy, sad, angry, scared, worried, shocked, and excited with their corresponding *emotion picture cards.

Playing the Guess Who? Emotions Game/ Yes/No Questions.

To play the Guess Who game, teachers should prepare a display for each student. A simple way is to cut the front panel from a cereal box and use the side flaps to staple or tape it so it stands upright. Then, glue the printable part  on the front of the display. Each student will have their own standing display to use during the game.

One student chooses a card with an emotion. The other students take turns asking yes/no questions:
“Is she happy?”“No.”
“Is he angry?”“Yes!”

Build the Emotion Words with letter tiles. Give students a pile of mixed letter tiles. Call out or show a picture of an emotion (e.g., happy) using the wheel. Students race to build the word with their tiles.

communicative approach of teaching english

Guess the Missing Letter. Teacher shows an emotion word with missing letters (e.g., s___oc___e____). Students use tiles to fill in the blanks and find the small card to match.

"Creative Ways to Use Emotion Small Cards in the ELL Classroom"

This resource can be found here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Emotions-Unit-for-Elementary-EFL-2023631

The Emotions small cards are especially useful for pair and group work. Using small cards keeps lessons active, gives every learner a chance to participate, and makes vocabulary practice more fun and memorable.

Students can play matching or memory by cutting the word out of each card. Then, name each emotion.

3P teaching method

Find My Match. Give each student a small card (half the class gets words, the other half pictures). Students walk around asking: “Are you happy?” until they find their match. Once matched, pairs sit down together.

Emotions adjectives Flashcards to describe people

This resource can be found here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Emotions-Unit-for-Elementary-EFL-2023631

Emotions are the feelings we have inside. It is important that English students learn to use these expressions.

Students can see a clear picture of the emotion on the flashcard and connect it with the word. They also allow for interactive activities such as matching, role-playing, games, and question-and-answer practice, which helps children remember the vocabulary and use it in real situations.

This activity helps students connect the visual image, body language, and spoken sentence. Hold an emotion flashcard and ask: How does he feel?

Student: (Miming) He is worried.

Shows more cards for the students to act it out.

Ask more questions to check comprehension and use of the new language. Students can also be the ones to ask the questions: Is she shy?

Student: Yes, she is.

This is the second part of the family unit resource. All will be one product. LINK: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Flashcards-worksheets-and-more-for-Elementary-ESL-students-4841832

It is available in this other store:
Watch the video of the complete resource:

Family members have a name.Use the possessive adjectives to introduce them.
Teacher: Who is this?
Students: Mother!
Teacher: What’s the mother’s name?
Students: Patricia. Her name is Patricia.
Continue with all the family members.

Family members have facial features
Use the flashcards to describe the parts of the face.
Teacher: Who is this?
Students: Mother!
Teacher: Look at the mother! She has curly black hair. She has black eyes.
                      Family members facial features flashcards

Insert each flashcard into a clear plastic sheet and using dry erase markers have the students label the facial features.

Students will understand how to use adjectives to express emotions.
I made a set of worksheets that can be done in a group to color in the facial features and the emotions. Each student can do one family member and then present to the class.
adjectives to express emotions worksheets

Or, they can exchange with other students in the group and read. The teacher can start a question and answer session.

Teacher: Who is this?
Students: The aunt!
Teacher: What’s her name?
Students: Her name is Lucy.
Teacher: Does she have brown hair?
Students: Yes, she does!
Teacher: Does she have blue eyes?
Students: No, she doesn’t. She has green eyes.
Teacher: Is she happy or sad?
Students: She is happy!

I also added a smaller set just in case you needed it.
After the little faces are done, you can sort the family members by hair color.

                                     Or sort by eye color.

Family Unit Pocket charts can be used for reading purpose and have them work in pairs to complete the reading task.Use these to ask yes/no questions: Is this Father?

ask yes/no questions family unit pocket chart

If you do not have a pocket chart, try making the sentences on the desk or a mat.
Make it fun to read using a pointer. I had this old one from the Dollar Tree store.

I found these dry erase cutouts and use it for writing the sentences in the pocket charts.

You can make your own sentences for the pocket charts. I used these strips that I had from the Dollar Store.
Or cut the words and have the students make the sentences.
To end this part of the Family Unit I made a game board.

The golf balls are the markers for each student, I placed a clip behind each ball. The cards are light green (female) or dark green (male) depending if landing on the dark or green part of the game board. Students move along the board as they answer the questions correctly.
