Turkey Family for Thanksgiving Teaching -Elementary ELLs

This resource is included in The Family Unit for Elementary ELLs. Link To the resource:   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Unit-for-Elementary-ELL-Starters-1804475

This Turkey Family resource is perfect for engaging elementary English language learners with family vocabulary. It introduces students to Thanksgiving themes, building cultural awareness.

The turkey family can be used to review the family-related words, helping students practice terms like “mother,” “father,” “brother,” and “sister” in a fun, memorable way using the printable flashcards.

Teachers can create interactive activities around the turkeys, like naming family members, describing them, or using simple sentences, boosting speaking confidence by creating small cards on the templates provided.

The Turkey Family worksheets in the resource offer a great way to support both vocabulary building and holiday-themed learning. There are color words and then bind together and create a book.

By engaging with written tasks, students build reading comprehension and writing skills, which are crucial for language development. There are: color by number, complete the family words, answer the yes/no questions.

Games provide a playful way for students to repeatedly use family-related vocabulary in context. As students play, they need to speak and listen to each other, promoting language production as they move along the board: It’s a blue feather. If the students say the correct word, that feather card is available for that player to take.

The goal is that players get as many feathers. They will color the feathers on their worksheet if they have the cards. They will continue playing until they get as many cards possible. The winner is the one with the most feathers to color.

They will complete their turkey on their worksheet, either mother, father, brother, sister or baby, just one. They will make a craft with their turkey member by adding the feathers and the person. Make a display in class.

Adding a new Thanksgiving resource to all the other that are already here on the blog. Check them at the label section on the right column.

Thanksgiving resource
Print the pages of the book.

Students can make individual books or group books. Students will color each page as they read the sentences.
There is a set of a turkey surrounded by several objects and pages describing each item. You an put them together.  I would make the students color the separate items first and then look them up in the turkey picture and color accordingly.
Another example:
The pages are meant to review vocabulary from the farm unit that might have previously taught.
the last set of turkey and vocabulary pages.
Put all the sets together and bind the pages of the book.
Prepare all the toilet paper roll puppets. You can also do craft sticks or flannel board cutouts for storytelling.
                                       You can also practice prepositions.
Teacher: Put the turkey in front of the barn.
Teacher: What color is the barn ?
Students: It's read and white.
More examples for practicing prepositions.
Students can say positional sentences to other students to find the items and place them in the correct postion.
Student: The turkey is in front of the barn.
You can place the puppets in any position and ask questions.
Teacher: Where is the turkey'
Students: It is between the basket and the chicken.

Turkey in disguise for ESL students in Thanksgiving

LINK to the resource:

turkey disguise worksheet
As I was looking for creating a new Thanksgiving  product I came across the cute Turkey in disguise clip art from Scrappin Doodles. I started looking for the Turkey in disguise book, but I just found this poem with no author.
My name is Tom Turkey
And I’m afraid as I can be.
I’m wearing my disguise
So you won’t catch me.

And there’s an audio book video on  YOUTUBE:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjXTNlW2qaU (Turkey Trouble).
If you are reading the book and have more advanced students, there is a free product at the Teacherspayteachers.com store.

I thought that it would be good to review the community helpers, jobs and occupations and made several flashcards. Review the vocabulary words using the flashcards.
As many of you have commented that you liked the labeling the flashcards activity. Here is another one.

Play BINGO! With the flashcards. Hand in the 3x3 bingo grid to each student and have them write any of the 20 community helpers, jobs and occupations words. Start call the words with the flashcards and the students cross out the words they hear as you show the flashcard. The winner is the first one to cross out all the words.

Place all the flashcards on the board. Have the students notice that all the turkeys are wearing something or have an object with them.  In an allotted amount of time such as 5 or 10 minutes have them list all the objects. The winner is the one that list the most objects. Have that student dictate them and write them on the board as the class crosses them out. Then, have the class dictate words that haven’t been said.

I created two game board to be used in game stations. Print them and make different groups to play the games.

I place an opened clip behind each character to be used as markers.

Demonstrate some useful phrases for playing the game: It’s my turn (by pointing to yourself) It’s your turn (by pointing to another person)
I made several flashcards to warm up the phrases that are most common during the game. There’s the flashcard for roll the die, start, finish, move, don’t fight. Introduce those words and leave the flashcards on the board as a reminder.

Then, I created a turkey to be disguised
I like to encourage creativity in the classroom to engage my students and to make learning fun and to express the  language that they know. The turkey can be anything, there are hats, shoes, and more to create a very fun disguised turkey. Plase send me pictures of the turkey!
And for some older kids they can write a text. My sister in law did this one.

I thought about your students and managed to come up with  the color by numbers pages!
Or something easier, just coloring.

Thanksgiving Activities for Elementary English Language Learners

Thanksgiving ! First blog post for Thanksgiving. Resources very hard to find that can suit EFL/ESL students at this age. It is a Holiday that doesn't say anything to them, but as Language is Culture, it is something that we should teach. I used to have a Thanksgiving day, and all the resources were guided into reviewing previous lessons, recycle vocabulary  besides eating  Thanksgiving food, such as apple pie, turkey sandwiches, that was more less what I could find in my hometown for the Holiday.

A dress up Pilgrims to review clothes vocabulary.

Then make puppets using toilet paper rolls !

I made this big wreath with a paper plate that is used for placing cakes.

Cut a hole in the middle. Have the students paint the wreath or leave it plain. Students will color each item and glue them as they wish. Then, have each student come to the front to show his/her wreath and describe all the items. They can take it home or display in class.

Let´s review the parts of the body with a turkey.

First have the students color the parts of the body of the turkey that will have to be glued. It is a good idea to have your own template ready and colored to put up on the board to guide the students.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s head. Color it brown.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s body. Color it brown.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s beak. Color it yellow.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s waddle. Color it red.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s wings. Color them brown.
Teacher: Look at the turkey´s feathers. Color number one pink. Color number two orange. Color number three purple. Color number four gray. Color number five red. Color number six green. Color number seven yellow. Color number eight blue.
And Finally, look at the turkey and color the legs orange.

Have the students then cut out all the pieces and start gluing them starting with the feathers, the head, the body, the beak, the wings and the waddle. There is a template with numbers, so the students have to match a feather number to a feather word in order to paste it. Then move on to glue each body part.

I had them cut the whole turkey and place it on a poster board or a large construction paper. I added the body parts to trace, cut and glue to the turkey.

A fun and easy craft. I made a colored and a black and white version. I punched a hole and used twig and yarn for the knot.
