speaking activities for students

These printables are for learning how to write birthday invitations and cards. It ties together language learning, writing, and social-emotional skills. Writing birthday invitations and cards encourages empathy and consideration for others.

Writing birthday invitations is a real-world task. It encourages the use of common phrases such as "You are invited”, which enhances their vocabulary and sentence structure.

Students have the chance to practice writing in a structured yet creative way. They learn how to format an invitation, including addressing the recipient, adding the time and location—skills that build their overall writing abilities.

Writing Birthday cards is common in many cultures. It provides an opportunity to compare and contrast birthday customs from different cultures, fostering cultural understanding. Students can decorate their cards and invitations and hand them in to friends and family.

Birthday games introduce vocabulary and phrases related to a real-life context (birthdays), making language learning more meaningful and relatable. The playful nature of games can reduce anxiety in ELLs.

Fun games such as domino can help maintain motivation. This Birthday-themed game allows students to match images with the corresponding word. It is a way to reinforce word recognition.

Birthday Puzzle games offer repeated exposure to the new vocabulary making it easy to retain new words through play. As students put the puzzle together, they can be encouraged to verbalize what they are matching.

speaking skills for kindergarten

Board games involve interaction and collaboration between peers. There are two cards that prompt players to answer the question. The other cards are for moving one space or going back.

Spelling Games can incorporate visual, and kinesthetic elements. Provide students with the printable cut-out letters in the shape of birthday-themed items balloons and candles. Use these for various spelling games where students arrange the letters to spell vocabulary words  based on the small cards, puzzles, etc.

As an extra spelling activity have the students do word shapes. Give the learners math paper with the squares. The letters that are within the lines have to be represented by a square and the other letters that go above the line should be a rectangle to fit them. Prepare an example for the class. A fun way to see how each word represents a shape.

Birthday Unit Small Cards for Elementary ELLs

This resource is included in The Birthday Unit:   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Birthday-Unit-for-Elementary-ESL-5279726

Birthday unit small cards offer a quick and engaging way to review the new vocabulary related to birthdays. Find these easy to store, prepare, and reuse, which reduces preparation time.

Enhance both language development and classroom interaction. The cards can be used for various activities such as Point to.

Teacher: Point to the balloon!

Just like this:

If you don’t have a pointer in hand, have the students pick up the card as you name it: It’s a blue cake.

Using the cards in activities like sentence-building activities is engaging and fun for the students. They can write a sentence for each small card on a white board using colorful markers.

Learners that are ready can write even more complex sentences.

You can draw a picture of a birthday item and have the class guess what it is: It’s a candle! Students can play the game in pairs or small groups using the cards.

Listen!

The cards allow teachers to cater to different levels by adjusting the complexity of the tasks such as pair matching for beginners. Students will match the preposition word to the corresponding picture. Just cut the word out of each card. This kind of activity will help develop students’ cognitive skills, including concentration and recall of the location words.

Speaking opportunity!

Birthday Unit Flashcards for Elementary ELLs

This resource is included in The Birthday Unit: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Birthday-Unit-for-Elementary-ESL-5279726

The birthday unit is important to introduce students to essential vocabulary related to birthdays. This vocabulary is used in everyday conversations.

Print the flashcards to help your students associate the vocabulary with visual images, making it easier for them to remember new vocabulary.

Have the students identify the party objects using the flashcards: hat, balloon, cake, presents, card, candle.

Ask students: What can you see?

Students: I see a present.

Reviewing colors helps reinforce color vocabulary. Place two flashcards and ask: What color is this balloon?

Students: It’s orange!

Focus on colors to encourage the students to observe and describe objects in greater detail: What color are the candles?
Students: blue, purple, green!

Show a single flashcard with one present and say, “This is a present. It is yellow.” Then, show a flashcard with several presents and say, “They are presents. They are green and blue.”

Sorting the birthday objects.

Create two columns on the board labeled “It is” and “They are”. Show a flashcard and ask students to decide if it goes under “It is” or “They are.” Place the card in the correct column and have students say the corresponding sentence: It’s a card.

Reinforce that "there is" is used with singular nouns (one object), while "there are" is used with plural nouns (more than one object).

Teacher: "There is one cake". "There are five balloons."

Incorporate the numbers 1 to 10 using the flashcards. Birthdays often involve talking about age, and students need to be comfortable with numbers to express how old they are or how old someone else is.

Birthdays often involve counting items like candles on a cake, balloons, or gifts. Have the students accurately count and talk about these items using the flashcards.

Teachers: How cupcakes are there?

Students: One, two, three, for, five! Five cupcakes.

Ask and answer about age.

Start by teaching the basic question structure: “How old are you?

Show a birthday flashcard with a picture of a boy or girl with a number corresponding to the age and ask students: How old is he?

Students: He’s eight!

Introduce new structures: Today is Anna’s Birthday. She’s nine years old.

Have the students say more sentences using the rest of the flashcards.

To express likes and dislikes.
Teacher: I like cake! I don’t like balloons!
Make an emphasis on the final s.
Ask your students about their preferences and place that flashcard on the board and you can even graph the party objects.

People do different actions in a party. Use any tense that you want.

Teacher: What is he doing?
Students: He is opening a present.

Teach the phrase “Whose birthday is it?” by modeling it several times. Place several flashcards on the board and ask, "Whose birthday is it?"

Students: "It's Ann's birthday."

Explain the ‘s to indicate possession. Make stick puppets ‘s to make it easier for the students to grasp the rule.

Talk about the location of objects.
Use the flashcards to demonstrate prepositions like "in front of," "behind," "next to," "on," and "under":
Prepare the cutouts to place the candle flashcard in different positions relative to the cupcake flashcard. Show each position flashcard and then the students will repeat the location using the cutouts.
Teacher: "The candle is on the cupcake."
Invite students to prepare their own cutouts using the template provided and move the cutouts themselves, using the correct prepositions in sentences.
