Recycle old CD Cases and CDs for distance teaching

With distance learning taking place for many English Language Learners sometimes you need that the students get a board. Well, the wipe board might be at home between the DVD movies. Have the students collect the old DVD or CD cases and take out the movie insert and place a blank paper inside the case.

Offer new learning opportunities to your students.

Old CDs that sit around the house of your students can be recycled. I made this FREE printable for the family members. Students can print them at home and you can use them for speaking opportunities through the distance learning.  It is as easy as printing and gluing.
Teacher: Show me mommy!
Students: Mommy!
It is available just by request. Here is my email: ei98srl@gmail.com

Here are some ideas on how to use the CD cases in class but easily adapted for distance teaching.

Idea 1. Any dry erase marker works for writing on the case. Use it for dictation or spelling practice. Everything can be erased using a baby wipe.

Open the CD case and insert colored paper and have the students sort any cards or write words that need to be sorted.

Idea 2. Students can cut magazine pictures and write the words on the CD case. Then, they can store the pictures inside the case to use them in another occasion.

I made a game board and I made a game board and then placed the game pieces inside the case. Anything can be stored inside.

Idea 3. I also made an accordion book for the CD case.

The Weather was –Simple past of verb to be

LINK: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Weather-in-the-past-tense-4976066
Watch the video of the complete resource:

The Weather in simple past of the verb to be. There are several flashcards included in the resource.

Here is an example on using them on the board.
Teacher: What’s the weather?
Students: windy!
Teacher: Today is windy. (write in down and write each word in a different color.)
Teacher: What’s the weather?
Students: sunny!
Teacher: Yesterday was sunny. (write in down and write each word in a different color.)

Have the students contrast each weather using the worksheet.

Ask more questions using the flashcards.

Yes/ No questions using the flashcards.

Have the students write more sentences using the flashcards.
Days of the week strips to create the Forecast on the board along with weather cards.

Have the students talk about the weather yesterday. I used the days of the week to make a small calendar on the board.
Teacher: What day was yesterday?
Students: Tuesday!
Teacher: How was the weather on Tuesday?
Students: It was humid! (Underline was in each sentence)
I made weather strips to make a forecast on the board.

Write a Weather Forecast. Use all the small cards.
Have the students write sentences on their notebooks following the structure: On Wednesday it was wet. It wasn’t hot. Or It was a cloudy day on Wednesday. Use any structure that you are working on. Give out the small worksheet to create the forecast.

The weather goes on in other cities.
Teacher: What was the weather like in Mexico City?
Students: It was cold!

Or use the flashcards for other countries.
Teacher: What was the weather like in Venezuela?
Students: It was rainy!

I am including the country flashcards as I used in my other blog post about the weather and countries in Simple present. Check the blog post for more things that you can do with the resources. LINK: https://eflelementaryresources.blogspot.com/2018/02/weather-around-world-for-esl.html

Do the same sorting on a desk or on the floor. Students can check on the internet the weather yesterday and sort all the countries, I just did a small example.

Use the small cards for writing sentences on the notebooks.

I am trying to create game boards for every product. Students love an extra time for playing on their own. I tape a bended clip behind each game marker to make it stand. The game board has 4 colors: red, yellow, blue and green. I wrote 2 specific questions depending on where they land: How was the weather? and How is the weather? In order to have students contrast between both tenses.
This is how my Printable game board turned out.
In this era of recycling I see lots of last year books going to the trash or the teachers not knowing what to do with them. I have posted some ways on how to recycle them. Here is another example. Cut out the pictures and have the students do spelling using plastic plates and dry erase markers, where you can easily erase the words.

Or use a fly swatter with a rectangle cut in the middle to read the words.

Recycle old ESL Elementary Textbooks

As a teacher, I have had so many teacher´s book, student´s book, workbook and from different grade, levels and so on. I saw how the children threw them away at the end of the school year. I used to give them away for paper recycling but those places are not around anymore. Old textbooks are not good for donations, since the Publishing Companies come out with different series every year.
I still have several from my teaching days and decided to invent something. This is how it went with my Early Childhood and Elementary Series Textbooks.

Sorting. For the family theme there lots of pictures of family members, I just cut them out .I made a word card for each family member and had the students sort out all the pictures.

The pocket chart is another way to sort out all the pictures.

I found this old pocket folder. I grabbed clear pocket sheets, one for each family member. Students glued the word and the corresponding pictures. I used butterfly clips and made a book. Students can write each word using whiteboard markers and then erase it.

Sorting spoons in nouns, verbs, adjectives. Another sorting activity involving cups and spoons. I wrote Verbs, Adjectives and Nouns on each cup. Give the students the plastic spoons and sharpie markers. Have them write a word from the text on each spoon and have the group partners place it where it belongs.

Make a book. Many textbooks come with short stories that are  read like once in the classroom. Have the students make an accordion book.

Play Spelling Bingo. Give each child the short reading recycled page. After reading the story  using your preferred technique. Have the students select 15 words from the reading and write them down. Make your own list and cut out each word, place them in a bag. Start calling the words and the students tick them if they have that word written on their paper. The first student to tick them all off calls out BINGO!

Sort Noun and Verbs. Give the reading recycled page to each student and have them sort the words in two columns, one for verbs and another for nouns.

Write sentences. After reading the recycled story, students can write sentences in a grammar structure that you want to practice.

Match paragraph. I cut the story in pictures and paragraphs and placed them in a Cd sleeve. Students had to match each paragraph with the corresponding picture.

Sentence Association. There was this review page. I cut the picture and sentence and make a sentence association game. I glued all the cutouts onto fun foam.

Egg carton Alphabet Sort. I placed a small craft stick behind each cutout. I also glued a fun foam letter to each egg hole. Students sort all the pictures by the beginning letter of each picture.

Make a crown for each letter. With so many pictures from the book. I made a crown for each letter. Students have to find pictures that begin with the letter in the crown given and glue them accordingly.  Have the students show their crown to the class and the words that they found.

Write vocabulary words. Have the students glue each picture and write as many vocabulary words they know. The winner is the student that writes more words.
