Teaching school people and places vocabulary helps elementary ESL students describe who works in a school and where they are. Using questions and interactive activities allows students to practice speaking and communicate in real-life situations.

Introduce School People with Flashcards

The most important part of school is the people! The school workers.

I made several flashcards to use for the speaking part of the lesson plan.

Hold up a flashcard and show it to class, say the word and have your students repeat back.

Practice “Who” and “Where” Questions

Place a school place flashcard and a school person flashcard. Have the students make sentences stating where they are.

Teacher: Who is he?

Student: He is the Principal.

Teacher: Where is he?

Student: He is in the Principal’s office.

Teacher: Who is in the bathroom?

Student: The janitor is in the bathroom.

Teacher: Who works in the library?

Student: The librarian works in the library. 

Tell students that you are interviewing a flashcard person. 

Make a model and have students help with more questions. Then, assign each group of students a teacher, worker or students in the building to interview them, even in the native language and having to translate later. Put up all the interviews in a class book for everyone to read.

Mind Map

Pick a flashcard to provide an example for a writing activity as in a mind map.

Tell the students that you have selected this flashcard and will create with the class a mind map. Start asking questions and write key words. Students can also add key word or ask questions to class to get more words.

Teacher: Who is she?

Student: She is the science teacher.  (write science teacher)

Teacher: Where does she work?

Student: she works in the science lab. (write science lab)

Then have students do their own writing using the set of flashcards. When they have finished have the students work in pairs and complete each other writing with more words.

Place another flashcard on the board and write the WH questions words on the board.

Teaching school places, subjects, and time helps elementary ESL students describe their daily school routine using real-life language. By combining vocabulary and speaking activities, students learn how to talk about where they are and what they do during the school day.

Introduce School Places and Subjects

Use the school places flashcards to teach the new words.

Place all the school places flashcards on the board to introduce to the class. Have them say which ones are in their school.

Teacher: Cafeteria!

Students: YES!

Teacher: Gym!

Students: NO!

Hand in the School places flashcards to several students and have them come to the front.

Teacher: Where are you?

Students: I am in the music room.

Teacher: Where are you?

Students: I am in the Science Lab.

Play a game. Hand in the school places flashcards to all the students in the class. They can’t show it to anybody.

Teacher: Maria, are you in the library ?

Maria: No, I am not. I am at the playground. (shows it to the class).

Then, it’s Maria’s turn to ask another student the question. The game keeps going until all then cards are shown to the class.

Have the students identify the school subjects and where they take place in their school.

Teacher: Where do you have Art?

Students: in the art room!

Teacher: Where do you have I.T?

Students: in the computer room!

Have the students make more sentences.

Talk about where the places are using prepositions and the flashcards.

Teacher: Where is the Library?

Students: It is next to the water fountain.

Teacher: Where is the water fountain?

Students: It is between the library and the playground.

Have the students write similar sentences of their school setting.

Practice “Where Are You?” Questions

Place this set of flashcards on the board and ask students questions.

Teacher: Where is she?

Students: She is in the Library.

Teacher: Where are they?

Students: They are in the cafeteria.

Have the students write these sentences on their notebooks.

Create a School Timetable

Now ask students where they are and at what time.

Teacher: Where are they at twenty to nine?

Students: They are in the computer room.

Teacher: Where is he at eleven o’clock?

Students: He is in the Science Lab.

Place the noun flashcards on the board and ask students questions.

Teacher: Where is the palette?

Students: It is in the Art room.

Place the art room flashcard on or next to the palette. Continue with the rest of the nouns.

Play a Speaking Board Game

I also made another game board for this specific grammar point.

Each player gets a student card as a marker. I placed a clip behind each one to make them stand. The first students throws the die and He/She has to answer: Where are you ?

Teacher: Where are you?

Students: I am in the computer room.

Teaching school subjects and time helps elementary ESL students talk about their daily schedule and routines. By combining subjects, days of the week, and time expressions, students can use English in meaningful, real-life situations.

Create a Timetable with Subjects and Time

Start by creating a timetable on the board with the words that they already know from previous lessons such as the subjects, the days of the week and the time. Use the flashcards.

Ask questions:

Teacher: When do you have Math?

Students: On Monday and Wednesday.

Teacher: What time do you have Math?

Students: at 9 o’clock.

Teacher: You have Math on Monday and Wednesday at 9 o’clock.

Have the students make sentences as you assign a subject.

Marcos: When do you have Music?

Students: I have Music on Tuesday at a quarter past one.

Ask and Answer Questions About Schedules

Where are you? Have the students say where they are and other people at a specific time using the digital clocks cards.

Teacher: Where are you at 10:25?

Students: I am in Math class.

Teacher: Where is Lily at 11:40?

Students: she is in Writing class.

Teacher: Where are James and Frank at 1:30?

Students: They are in P.E.

School starts and ends.

 Introduce the words start and finish using the flashcards.

Teacher: What time does school start?

Students: It starts at 8 o’clock.

Teacher: What time does school finish?

Students: It finishes at half past three.

Build Full Sentences with Time Expressions

Use the flashcards on the board to make more examples for sentences. Have the students make more sentences on their notebooks.

Play a Timetable Game Board

And for more practice make a game board.

 I found this cute clip art for game boards. It reminded me of Monopoly. I made a basic board ,each color on the board has its own cards to complete the task in order to move to other end.

Print, cut and organize all the items of this game. 

If the student lands on the green space, he/she reads the question on the green space and answer looking at the first green card on the pile.

Students roll the die and move their pawns around the board. When a student lands on a colored space, they answer the question for that color. In this example, the student lands on pink, reads the pink question card, and answers it.

Teaching people and places together helps students understand how language is used in real-life situations. It allows them to describe where people are and what they do, improving both vocabulary and communication skills. Teaching school subjects and related nouns helps elementary ESL students expand vocabulary and understand how words are connected. By linking subjects with classroom objects and concepts, students develop stronger word associations and improve communication skills.

Introduce School Subjects and Nouns with Flashcards and small cards

More flashcards are here to relate the school subjects from last blog post to the nouns.

Place the subject flashcard on the board and then have the students find the noun flashcards related to that subject. This is the MATH example as in a mind map.There are also classroom objects flashcards that go with the subjects.

Place the English flashcard in the center of the board. Have students find related noun flashcards, such as punctuation marks, literary characters, and books. Connect the cards to create a mind map and help students expand their English vocabulary.

Place the Chemistry flashcard in the center of the board. Have students find and group related noun flashcards, such as laboratory equipment, containers, measuring tools, and safety items. Connect the cards to create a mind map and expand Chemistry vocabulary.

Place the Biology flashcard on the board. Have students sort the related flashcards into categories, such as body systems, organs, parts of the body, and other biology vocabulary.

Place the History flashcard on the board. Have students match the related flashcards and organize them into a timeline, including ancient civilizations, famous people, and inventors. Encourage students to describe the cards and share what they know about history.

Place a world map on the board. Have students locate and place the Geography flashcards in the correct places, such as mountains, rivers, deserts, islands, and cities. Students can point to each location and describe the geographical features.

Place the Physics flashcards on the board and hide some in mystery bags. Students take turns picking a card, identifying the item, and describing it to the class. Encourage them to use clues and ask questions to guess the vocabulary word.

There are many more noun flashcards for these school subjects! Students can explore additional vocabulary for P.E., Religion, Information Technology, Music, Drama, and Art, making it easy to expand each mind map and connect new words to the subjects they learn at school.
