The Past Tense Verbs Small Cards are a versatile resource designed to help elementary ESL/EFL students practice the Simple Past Tense through meaningful, hands-on activities. Each small card features a clear illustration and a past tense verb, making it easy for students to recognize, remember, and use new vocabulary in context.

The compact size of the cards makes them perfect for pair work, small groups, learning centers, literacy stations, pocket charts, and interactive classroom games.

Regular vs. Irregular Verbs

Activity: Sort It!

Students work in pairs and sort the cards into two groups: Regular Verbs and Irregular Verbs. After sorting, they explain why each card belongs in its category.

This hands-on sorting activity encourages learners to compare verbs, identify similarities, and recognize that not all irregular verbs change in the same way. Students place the card under the correct printable header. The included sorting headers—No Change, One Vowel Change, and Complete Change—. This engaging activity is perfect for partner work.

Past Tense Sentence Building

Activity: Build a Sentence

Students choose a small picture card, identify the past tense verb, and write a complete sentence in their notebooks using the picture as a guide. To strengthen grammar awareness, students circle the past tense verb in red and underline the complement of the sentence, helping them recognize the different parts of a complete sentence.

This simple activity is perfect for independent practice.

Affirmative Sentences

Activity: Tell Me Yesterday

This speaking activity gives students meaningful practice using the Simple Past tense in complete sentences. Each student picks three small verb cards and tells classmates three things that happened yesterday. For example: I had lunch. I played with my dog. I made my bed.

The small cards provide visual support that helps students recall vocabulary. As students share their ideas, they strengthen their speaking confidence.

Negative Sentences

Activity: Not Yesterday!

This grammar activity helps students practice forming negative sentences in the Simple Past tense. Each student picks a small verb card and says a negative sentence using didn't, changing the past tense verb back to its base form. For example, a student who picks the played chess card says, "I didn't play chess yesterday."

As students share their sentences, they develop a deeper understanding of one of the most important grammar rules in the Simple Past: after didn't, the verb returns to its base form.

Yes/No Questions

Activity: Find Someone Who

Get your students moving and speaking with this interactive activity! Each student takes a small verb card and walks around the classroom asking classmates questions in the simple past, such as "Did you buy a soda yesterday?", "Did you swim yesterday?", "Did you take a shower yesterday?", or "Did you ride a bike yesterday?". Classmates answer using short answers and, when appropriate, expand with complete sentences. This communicative activity provides meaningful practice with Did + subject + base verb questions, short answers.

Wh- Questions – Activity: Interview Your Partner

This speaking activity gives students meaningful practice forming Wh- questions. One student draws a small verb card and writes as many Wh- questions as possible about the action. After writing their questions, they interview a classmate and record the answers. This activity reinforces the correct use of did in questions.

Time Expressions

Activity: When Did It Happen?

Time Expressions – Activity: When Did It Happen?

This activity helps students practice using time expressions with the simple past in complete sentences. Print the time cards yesterday, yesterday morning, last night, last weekend, and last Saturday. Students draw a small verb card and choose one of the printable time cards to complete a sentence.

Sequencing Events

Activity: Yesterday's Story

Students receive five random small cards and arrange them in a logical sequence to create a story about yesterday. After organizing the cards, they write a short paragraph using the Simple Past Tense and sequencing words such as first, then, next, after that, and finally. This activity gives students meaningful practice using past tense verbs, organizing ideas, and writing complete sentences while developing creativity and storytelling skills. Then they retell the story.

Activity: Change It to the Present

Students look at the small cards showing verbs in the Simple Past Tense and write the corresponding base form (Simple Present) for each verb. This activity helps students recognize irregular and regular verb forms while reinforcing the connection between the Simple Present and Simple Past. It is an excellent review activity for building vocabulary and strengthening students' understanding of verb changes.
