The Science of Reading section is included in this
resource to help students strengthen decoding, phonics, vocabulary, and reading
comprehension.
The reading tasks help students demonstrate
understanding of the text through meaningful practice.
Picture Walk (Before Reading)
There is a letter size page for each room in the
reader for teacher use. Use the smaller version for the students.
Show each page before reading. Encourage students to
look carefully at the pictures and make predictions.
Show the Cover, ask:
What do you see? Is the house spooky? What color is
the moon?
Read and Find
There is a
student size version of the reader. Students read the page and look carefully
at the picture. Then, they point to the matching object as they find each word
in the text.

Underline Words in the Text
Students read the text and underline the target words
using different colors. Find a Halloween character or words in orange, a room
word in green, a furniture word in purple, and a preposition word in gray.
