Pets Unit Numbers 1 to 20 for Elementary ELL

Students need to be comfortable with numbers as they are a core part of basic vocabulary for this level. Learning them helps expand the students' English lexicon. In class you use numbers for instructions (e.g., "Turn to page 10," "Circle number 15"), so understanding numbers is crucial for following directions.Write your  lesson plan for english ESL.

Have the dogs worksheets with numbers 1 to 20 printed for each student. They will read and color the dogs accordingly. Perfect for recognizing numerals 1–20.

There is another dog-themed worksheet with the numbers to do the matching activity by reading simple sentences.

Another printable matching mat activity, great for individual or small group work. You can also cut all the cards and there you have a memory game. Ideal to practice One-to-one correspondence (matching quantity to numeral). 

As a speaking activity:

I just had to do this Number wheel for counting 1 to 20 that I saw on Instagram, not easy to create it but I finally got it.  Print the 3 wheels, cut and pass a butterfly clip to hold them together. Students will match the dig, the numeral and the word. Fun and easy to play with.

Present Continuous Small Cards for Elementary English Language Learners

Handling and manipulating the Present Continuous small cards can make learning more interactive and engaging for the learners. Use the cads for writing the elementary english lesson plans.

Sentence Building Activity

 Cards can be used in sentence construction. Students pick a card and form a sentence using the Present Continuous tense, such as "She is doing homework."

Guess the Action Game

Divide a large piece of paper or board into a grid with rows and columns. I used ABC and 123, you can make yours to suit your needs. Glue the small cards.

Students can a write sentence per grid- A1- He’s jumping rope.

Action Charades

Students can do Acting.  B2: DRINK! I am drinking coffee!

You can ask questions:  B1- Is she playing the guitar or the violin?

Students: She’s playing the violin.

Play BINGO  for Practicing the Present Continuous Structure 

Students write 5 verbs or sentences from the grid. You call out the words or sentences. The first student to cross them out, wins.

Visual and tactile learning aids can help students better remember the structure and usage of the tense. Prepare a word display in an inflexible order. Just print the templates and assemble the display. I glued only the vertical spots on the horizontal structure. To put it together questions, just message me. Learners will move the strips to write the correct sentence to each small card.

Students can also write the sentences formed on their notebooks.

Present Continuous Flashcards for Elementary English Language Learners

Present Continuous Action Flashcards

Flashcards are a powerful tool for introducing verbs and actions. Each card shows a character performing an action, helping students visualize the grammar structure.

Activity 1. Show a flashcard and have the students do the action and say the word. Do the same with as many flashcards as you can.

Students: dancing! Dancing! (as they do the action).

Speaking Practice with Flashcards

Flashcards can be used for interactive speaking activities.

Activity 2. Place the eat flashcards on the board. Designate a student a flashcard. Ask questions.
Teacher: Are you eating cake?
Student: Yes, I am.

Activity 3. Make a grid on the board using the flashcards.
Teacher: B2!
Student: Dancing. They are dancing.
Teacher: She is opening her locker.
Student: C3!.

Flash Cards for Sentence Building

Activity 4. Place several flashcards on the board and write the questions words: Who, What; Where?
Teacher: CLIMB!
Students: Where is he climbing?
Teacher: He is climbing in Bolivia.
Students: Who is climbing?
Teacher: Peter is climbing in Bolivia.
Students: What is he doing?
Teacher: He is climbing a mountain in Bolivia.

Have the students write questions on their notebooks using the flashcards as prompts.

Practicing the Present Continuous Structure

Students learn how to form sentences using the pattern: Subject + be + verb-ing

Activity 5. Collocations. Place three flashcards on the board.
Teacher: What are they doing?
Students: They are sitting.
Teacher: Where is he sitting?
Students: He is sitting on a bench.  (write on a bench)
Continue with the other two. Tell students that adding words to a verb gives more details to a sentence in Present Continuous.

Activity 6. Now, place only one flashcard on the board. I used studying. Have the students dictate words to make more sentences.
Students: Math!
Teacher: She is studying Math.

Activity 7. Place the flashcards on the board and say a wrong sentence on purpose for each flashcard.
Teacher: She is eating spaghetti.
Students: No! She is eating a hamburger.

Activity 8. Students write a 3x3 Bingo board on their notebooks. Place all the action flashcards on the board that you are working on. Students choose 9 action words and write them on each square. Take away all the flashcards from the board, mix them up and start calling the verb flashcards as you show each one to the class. Students cross out the ones that they have, the first student to do it shouts BINGO!

Activity 9. Routines. Place the get up flashcard on the board and mime getting up. Have the students mime getting up and say the sentence: I am getting up. Continue with more daily routines as you place the flashcards on the board.

Point to each flashcard and ask questions.
Teacher: What is he doing?.
Student 1: He is making his bed.
Say a name of a flashcard in random order and have a student come up and point to it and say a sentence.
Teacher: take!
Student 1: He is taking a shower. ( pointing to the flashcard)
