Recycle old ESL Elementary Textbooks

As a teacher, I have had so many teacher´s book, student´s book, workbook and from different grade, levels and so on. I saw how the children threw them away at the end of the school year. I used to give them away for paper recycling but those places are not around anymore. Old textbooks are not good for donations, since the Publishing Companies come out with different series every year.
I still have several from my teaching days and decided to invent something. This is how it went with my Early Childhood and Elementary Series Textbooks.

Sorting. For the family theme there lots of pictures of family members, I just cut them out .I made a word card for each family member and had the students sort out all the pictures.

The pocket chart is another way to sort out all the pictures.

I found this old pocket folder. I grabbed clear pocket sheets, one for each family member. Students glued the word and the corresponding pictures. I used butterfly clips and made a book. Students can write each word using whiteboard markers and then erase it.

Sorting spoons in nouns, verbs, adjectives. Another sorting activity involving cups and spoons. I wrote Verbs, Adjectives and Nouns on each cup. Give the students the plastic spoons and sharpie markers. Have them write a word from the text on each spoon and have the group partners place it where it belongs.

Make a book. Many textbooks come with short stories that are  read like once in the classroom. Have the students make an accordion book.

Play Spelling Bingo. Give each child the short reading recycled page. After reading the story  using your preferred technique. Have the students select 15 words from the reading and write them down. Make your own list and cut out each word, place them in a bag. Start calling the words and the students tick them if they have that word written on their paper. The first student to tick them all off calls out BINGO!

Sort Noun and Verbs. Give the reading recycled page to each student and have them sort the words in two columns, one for verbs and another for nouns.

Write sentences. After reading the recycled story, students can write sentences in a grammar structure that you want to practice.

Match paragraph. I cut the story in pictures and paragraphs and placed them in a Cd sleeve. Students had to match each paragraph with the corresponding picture.

Sentence Association. There was this review page. I cut the picture and sentence and make a sentence association game. I glued all the cutouts onto fun foam.

Egg carton Alphabet Sort. I placed a small craft stick behind each cutout. I also glued a fun foam letter to each egg hole. Students sort all the pictures by the beginning letter of each picture.

Make a crown for each letter. With so many pictures from the book. I made a crown for each letter. Students have to find pictures that begin with the letter in the crown given and glue them accordingly.  Have the students show their crown to the class and the words that they found.

Write vocabulary words. Have the students glue each picture and write as many vocabulary words they know. The winner is the student that writes more words.

Weather Flashcards Activities for ESL EFL Learners

The Weather unit and the Flashcards activities for Elementary English Language Learners.

Flashcards activity 1. Display all the weather flashcards on the board. Point and ask questions.

Teacher: What´s the weather like  today?
Students: It´s rainy.
Teacher: Is it snowy?
Students: yes, it is.
Teacher: Is it sunny?
Students: No, it isn´t.

Flashcards activity 2. Make a weekday chart on the board using your flashcards.

Ask Questions.
Teacher: Today is Tuesday. What´s the weather like ?
Students: It´s windy.
Have the students ask and answer more questions.

Flashcards activity 3. Order the flashcards by size. Have the students tell you how to order them on the board. Then ask questions.
Teacher: Which is the biggest?
Students: The sun!
Teacher: Which is the smallest?
Students: The snowflake!

And ask questions about color.
Teacher: What color is the sun?
Students: yellow!

Flashcards activity 4. Make patterns. Hand in the student´s flashcards.

Say a pattern order and have the students create them on their desks using the smaller version. Place the flashcards on the board for student´s correction. This makes for a good listening exercise.
Teacher: windy, cloud, lightning, sunny!

Flashcards activity 5. Express  weather likes. Place the weather flashcards on the board. Review all the weather flashcards that you have selected.

Hand in the small weather cards for the students to color and write their name on their favorite.
When they come to the board to place their card they have to express their opinion.
Student: My favorite weather is sunny.

Ask questions: Which weather has the most votes? ,Which weather has the least votes?, How many votes are there for sunny?

Flashcards activity 6. Games !
Game1. Spinners.
Give each student a spinner and a set of flashcards and questions to the group.

One student will be the reader and the rest will judge if the answer is correct. When a student answers a question correctly he or she colors a fraction of the spinner. If the answer is incorrect, he or he can´t color the spinner.  The first student to complete coloring the spinner is the winner. I made a colored version that you can add plastic contact paper or laminate, students can use board markers to color and the spinner can be erased and reused. If not, use the paper version. The spinner has 8 fractions.

Game 2. Cards around the room. Place the flashcards on the floor around the room following a path. Play some music or some weather sounds and have the children walk around the path of path. When the sounds stops they have to grab the card close to them and at your signal  show the flashcard and say the word.

Game 3. Have the children order the flashcards alphabetically. Give each group a set of flashcards and at your signal have them order the flashcards. The first group to finish calls STOP!

Game 4. Draw it. Divide the class into groups. Have them assign one student from each group to come to the front and draw the flashcards that you will show them. The first group to shout out the word wins a point.

And a freebie, Weather Flashcards in Spanish ( Tarjetas imprimibles del clima en español) ! Just for the teachers that are in a dual language class or teach Spanish anywhere.

Christmas Flashcards

I know that ESL Teachers love flashcards. I made a new set with these clipart from Scrappin Doodles. There are 57 flashcards.
Here´s the link:
Flashcards activity 1. Place selected flashcards on the board and hand in the scrabble letters to the students and have them make crosswords with the letters on their tables.

Flashcards activity 2. Have the students write each word under the  flashcard using the scrabble letters.

Flashcards activity 3. Place the flashcards around the room. Have the students find them as you ask questions.
                                 Teacher: Where is the gift?
Students: Here ! It is on the chair.

Flashcard activity 4. Make a grid on the board with random flashcards. Ask questions.

Teacher: Find B3. Who is B3?

Students: He is Rudolf.

Then ask students to make sentences that relate to make a short  Christmas Story. Write an example and have it ready to read to the class.

Teacher: Joseph and Mary are in the stable. The Angel is at the stable, too. She is drinking cocoa. The reindeer likes cocoa. The Shepherd came to see Baby Jesus, but Rudolf was at the stable. The Elf Girl came with the Gingerbread and The Gingerbread House. Poinsettias were in the sack with many presents.

Well, I invented this story. You can use it, but I am not that good at writing, LOL!!

Flashcard activity 4. Have the students order the flashcards alphabetically on the board.

Flashcard activity 5. Place the stable flashcard in the middle of the board. Ask students who and what  belongs to the stable. Make a mind map. Place the corresponding flashards as the students mention them.
Teacher: Look at the stable ! Who belongs to the stable ?
Students: Joseph! Mary! Baby Jesus! Shepherd !sheep! Angel! star!

Flashcard activity 6. Place pairs of flashcards and ask questions with WHERE?
Teacher: Where is the gingerbread man?

Students: He is in the gingerbread house!
Teacher: Where is Mary?
Students: She is in the stable!

Flashcard activity 6. Labeling! Label the parts of the body using a white board marker and a plastic sheet.

Flashcards are great for speaking, listening and a writing activity can be included. But I made a Picture Dictionary for Reading and Vocabulary Practice. It has 5 pages and it can be done in groups and then bind it.
Have the students cut all the picture cards. I had the book binded before.
This is how my example turned out.
