Clothes that Family Members Wear for ESL learners

Place several of the family members flashcards on the board and ask questions.
Teacher: What is the cousin wearing?
Students: He’s wearing a cap, a t-shirt, shorts and shoes.
Teacher: What color is his cap?
Students: It’s blue and green.

Make a grid on the board and play GUESS WHO ? with the class.
Students: Is he or she wearing pants?
Teacher: YES!
Students: Are the pants yellow?
Teacher: NO!
Students: Are the pants green?
Teacher: YES!
Students: Is it B2, the grandpa?
Teacher: YES!

More activities with the flashcards for speaking purpose.
Teacher: Who are wearing a dress?
Students: Mother! Cousin! Sister! Aunt!
Teacher: Who is wearing shorts?
Students: Brother!

I made some labels to use with the flashcards. I made labels for the body parts and the clothing.

Clothes and family Bingo game. I don’t know how I came up with doing a Bingo game involving clothes and family. But it looks good.

There are more than 40 worksheets to give one to each student.

Have them label the family member and each clothing item. They can also color only the clothes. I think gluing the worksheet on the notebook will lead to more activities.

Then, grab your Bingo calling cards. The student that crosses out all the clothing items is the winner.
Take a look!

Since the worksheet is on the notebook, students can write a short text.

It is available in my other store:

Review the rooms in the house with the flashcards.
Familie Family in the house flashcards

Use the House and the family flashcards to make a grid that can look like a house on the board.
Teacher: Who is she?
Student: She’s Mother.
Teacher: Where is she?
Student: She’s in the bathroom.
Teacher: Is uncle Tom in the bedroom?
Student: Yes, he is.
Teacher: Where is Brother?
Student: He’s in the dining room.
Teacher: Who is in the living room?
Student: The cousin is.
Say a place and the students say the family member and then do the opposite.
Teacher: kitchen!
Student: Grandma!

Model and have students make plural sentences.
Teacher: The cousins are in the bathroom.
Student: The brothers are in the bedroom.
Teacher: Who are in the dining room?
Student: The aunts!
Teacher: Where are the babies?
Student: They are in the living room.

I made this craft house to use for speaking purpose using prepositions.

It comes in two parts to make a bigger house to display to the class.
Use it to make sentences with prepositions. Assemble one or several houses for the class.
Teacher: Put the brother in front of the house. Put the uncle next to the house. Put the mother next to the house.

I opened the windows and doors to review more prepositions.
Teacher: Where is the cousin?
Student: He is behind the window.
Teacher: Where is the cousin?
Student: She is in the house.

Students can make sentences: Brother is in front of the house. Mother is next to the house. Grandpa is between Mother and Grandma.

Print the Rooms in a house to use with the family members.

I made a house out of file folder. It is easier to carry around and play.
Label the rooms in the house. (LABELING)

The family members are in the house. Dictate where the members are.
Teacher: Aunt is in the bedroom. The cousin is in the bathroom. Grandma is in the living room. Father is in the dining room. The baby is in the kitchen.
Ask questions:
Teacher: Where is the cousin?
Student: She’s in the bathroom.
Teacher: Who is in the living room?
Student: Grandma is.

I made small word cards to make sentences.
The video!

                                            A worksheet for many activities.
The house can be colored by room.
Teacher: Color the bathroom blue. Or it can be colored by objects in the house. Dictate where to place the family members in the house. Do this as a listening activity.
The house can be colored by objects in the house.

It can be done as a writing activity on the notebook.

Family Flashcards and Worksheets for ESL students

I am working on the family unit resource. Here is the link to this material:   https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Flashcards-worksheets-and-more-for-Elementary-ESL-students-4841832

Watch the video of the complete resource:

Flashcards are great for introducing vocabulary. There are many things that you can use them. I made three sets of families. Two in English and one in Spanish. There are lots of dual language teachers that need resources and let’s see if these are helpful.

Grids are useful for students to focus on the new family vocabulary. Do it on the board by drawing a grid and placing the family members in random order.
Teacher: Who is in B2?
Students: Father!
Teacher: C3!
Students: aunt!
Point to the flashcards and ask Yes/No questions.
Teacher: Is this the brother?
Students: No, it isn’t!
Teacher: Is this the cousin!
Students: Yes, she is.

Show the students the flashcards upside down and have them identify the family member.

Sort the family members into male or female or boys and girls.

Worksheet 1. First, dictate a color to each family member box.
Teacher: Number 1 is pink.
Teacher: Who is in Number 1?
Students: The cousin!
Then, students complete the sentences.

I see that many teachers love using the notebooks for doing more thing beyond the worksheet. I would cut out each family member and then do a writing practice.

                                              Worksheet 2.

Writing cards. There are times when we have students that are not quite writing in their own language and a lot less in a new one. Tracing makes it easy for them to get related to the new vocabulary words.

More writing opportunities. Magnetic letters are fun and easy to use. I added a bigger size cards for the family members. Have the students write each word by looking at the writing sheet.

I found this idea and gave it a try. I buy lots of duct tape for many things, but I never thought of using it for writing purpose. I placed a strip of duct tape on top of a page of a notebook. Students can write the words as many times they want and erase it easily. Remember to use a dry erase marker.

Far are the days where the worksheets were put into a folder. I suggest dictating a color for each family word. Cut all the words and pictures from the worksheet and have them glue each picture and word on the notebook.

The worksheet can be used to play a matching game.
