Family member’s name, face and emotions for ESL

Family members have a name.Use the possessive adjectives to introduce them.
Teacher: Who is this?
Students: Mother!
Teacher: What’s the mother’s name?
Students: Patricia. Her name is Patricia.
Continue with all the family members.

Family members have facial features
Use the flashcards to describe the parts of the face.
Teacher: Who is this?
Students: Mother!
Teacher: Look at the mother! She has curly black hair. She has black eyes.

Insert each flashcard into a clear plastic sheet and using dry erase markers have the students label the facial features.


Students will understand how to use adjectives to express emotions.
I made a set of worksheets that can be done in a group to color in the facial features and the emotions. Each student can do one family member and then present to the class.

Or, they can exchange with other students in the group and read. The teacher can start a question and answer session.

Teacher: Who is this?
Students: The aunt!
Teacher: What’s her name?
Students: Her name is Lucy.
Teacher: Does she have brown hair?
Students: Yes, she does!
Teacher: Does she have blue eyes?
Students: No, she doesn’t. She has green eyes.
Teacher: Is she happy or sad?
Students: She is happy!


I also added a smaller set just in case you needed it.
After the little faces are done, you can sort the family members by hair color.
                                          
                                     Or sort by eye color.

Family Unit Pocket charts can be used for reading purpose and have them work in pairs to complete the reading task.Use these to ask yes/no questions: Is this Father?

If you do not have a pocket chart, try making the sentences on the desk or a mat.
Make it fun to read using a pointer. I had this old one from the Dollar Tree store.

I found these dry erase cutouts and use it for writing the sentences in the pocket charts.
                       
You can make your own sentences for the pocket charts. I used these strips that I had from the Dollar Store.
Or cut the words and have the students make the sentences.
To end this part of the Family Unit I made a game board.

The golf balls are the markers for each student, I placed a clip behind each ball. The cards are light green (female) or dark green (male) depending if landing on the dark or green part of the game board. Students move along the board as they answer the questions correctly.

Recycle old ESL Elementary Textbooks


As a teacher, I have had so many teacher´s book, student´s book, workbook and from different grade, levels and so on. I saw how the children threw them away at the end of the school year. I used to give them away for paper recycling but those places are not around anymore. Old textbooks are not good for donations, since the Publishing Companies come out with different series every year.
I still have several from my teaching days and decided to invent something. This is how it went with my Early Childhood and Elementary Series Textbooks.


Sorting. For the family theme there lots of pictures of family members, I just cut them out .I made a word card for each family member and had the students sort out all the pictures.



The pocket chart is another way to sort out all the pictures.



I found this old pocket folder. I grabbed clear pocket sheets, one for each family member. Students glued the word and the corresponding pictures. I used butterfly clips and made a book. Students can write each word using whiteboard markers and then erase it.

Sorting spoons in nouns, verbs, adjectives. Another sorting activity involving cups and spoons. I wrote Verbs, Adjectives and Nouns on each cup. Give the students the plastic spoons and sharpie markers. Have them write a word from the text on each spoon and have the group partners place it where it belongs.

Make a book. Many textbooks come with short stories that are  read like once in the classroom. Have the students make an accordion book.

Play Spelling Bingo. Give each child the short reading recycled page. After reading the story  using your preferred technique. Have the students select 15 words from the reading and write them down. Make your own list and cut out each word, place them in a bag. Start calling the words and the students tick them if they have that word written on their paper. The first student to tick them all off calls out BINGO!



Sort Noun and Verbs. Give the reading recycled page to each student and have them sort the words in two columns, one for verbs and another for nouns.

Write sentences. After reading the recycled story, students can write sentences in a grammar structure that you want to practice.

Match paragraph. I cut the story in pictures and paragraphs and placed them in a Cd sleeve. Students had to match each paragraph with the corresponding picture.



Sentence Association. There was this review page. I cut the picture and sentence and make a sentence association game. I glued all the cutouts onto fun foam.


Egg carton Alphabet Sort. I placed a small craft stick behind each cutout. I also glued a fun foam letter to each egg hole. Students sort all the pictures by the beginning letter of each picture.


Make a crown for each letter. With so many pictures from the book. I made a crown for each letter. Students have to find pictures that begin with the letter in the crown given and glue them accordingly.  Have the students show their crown to the class and the words that they found.

Write vocabulary words. Have the students glue each picture and write as many vocabulary words they know. The winner is the student that writes more words.

Christmas and Family Theme


Christmas is about family. I made a family album in which students trace the words, there is one with mom and dad and another with mother and father.
And students can make portraits like mine with craft sticks. You can make your own set and use them as flashcards.
Teacher: Who is this ?
Students: He is Brother !
The album can be turned into stick puppets.
And some Flashcards to review family members. 
But they can work for extra practice for prepositions. This time I printed them on cardboard and glued a big clothespin to make them stand.

Start with easy ones. 
The clips helps to attach one another.                                        
                         Teacher: Where is Brother ?
                      Students: Brother is on the stocking.
But any prepositions can be done using the clothespin.

Puzzles ! They are wonderful for preschool but they are useful for Elementary grades. Hand in a piece randomly to all the students. At your signal ask them to look around for other classmates that can complete their puzzle. Have a complete puzzle on a designated table. When the four students that make the  puzzle run to the assigned table and assemble the puzzle,they call to be first and win.
Pocket charts are good to review sentences or for the students to make their own sentences.
Students make a family tree but on the Gingerbread house.

Worksheets! Have the students color the worksheets as you say.
Teacher: Look at mother! Her hair is black. Her hat is green and white. Her dress is green. 
Have the students cut all the cards and play some games.
Teacher: Place your cards in order as I say.
Mom, cat, sister, reindeer.
Then have them cut the word out of each card and make a puzzle to put together on their notebooks.
