Total Physical Response for Elementary ELL

A lot has been said about Total Physical Response. Teachers usually do it at the beginning of the school year with their students. It has so many benefits for you and the learner.

Total Physical Response
I have done it with my classes and even more with the Kindergarten students. It's a way for no translation to the native language. I used to make flashcards with magazine cutouts, yes! no printer around those days. I moved on to make flashcards using clip art, the ones available for FREE. Nowadays, I have included the Commands Flashcards on all the resources from the Kindergarten Series 1 to 30.

So, if you are teaching the Farm Unit, review, reinforce or introduce the classroom commands using the Flashcards.
Teacher: Stand up like the pig!
             Sit down like the sheep!

There's also the goat, the cow, the horse and the hen.
Here is the blog post for more on the flashcards:   https://eflpreschoolteachers.blogspot.com/2022/04/farm-unit-flashcards-for-kindergarten.html

If you have new students, the Greetings unit for Kindergarten English Language Learners have the very basics Classroom Commands that you can place around your classroom. LINK: https://eflpreschoolteachers.blogspot.com/2020/08/greetings-theme-for-kindergarten.html

Show your students a command flashcard and have the class mime the action. These are great for those first weeks of the school year. LINK: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Colors-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-2-5956256
There are units that we can use TPR using the flashcards to review the new vocabulary. Here is an example:  Place several Town unit flashcards around the classroom. Show the students the command flashcard and have them go to that place doing the action.

Teacher: Run to the post office!

You can bring the Commands Flashcards for the Playground unit to the playground. Use them to have the students mime each action that they do in the playground.
Teacher: run! (students mime running in the class)

Fruit and Vegetables Unit Game for English Language Learners

I created a game inspired by a game on a book from this autor Shelley Vernon, named 176 English Language Games for Children. I found mine online years ago.

I have been adding a collection of units to my TPT store for Kindergarten Language Learners. This game is based on the 10th  unit for the Fruit and Vegetable Unit.

English teaching vocabulary

This is how it goes: Print one set of cards with the words and flashcards per group.

Make a list of posible sentences or phrases and write them down on a paper.

Divide your students into groups and give them a set of cards.

Call out the phrase : white onion.
Students in each group will go through the cards and put the phrase together and show it to the teacher or to any assigned student who will be the teacher’s helper.

Use simple phrases with colors and numbers for the early beginners. Why not, size!

It is a good practice to go for more complicated phrases with your older students.

The cards will make into a variety of sentences.

Students can write down the sentences or phrases they made on their notebooks.

This game will be fun in a face to face classroom. For online teaching, sending the students the cards would be good and I guess that more games will come to your mind, but please write them down on the comments section to benefit other teachers.

Oh, Christmas Tree!

A speaking or listening activity using a Christmas tree to review colors. It can be a real small tree or just print and play.

Link to the FREE resource:
I made my tree out of fun foam. I crafted all the pieces with fun foam as well.
I also wrapped yarn around the tree. I added an opened clip to each light and ornament.
This is the listening activity, check it at Pinterest:
And this is how it goes as a speaking activity.

Christmas Coloring Worksheets as a listening, speaking or writing activity

It's Christmas and when we think of coloring pages we think of the little ones. I do have FREE worksheets  for the students. For the older students, it can be a writing practice as they color and write a short text for their page.

Here is the LINK to the FREE resource:

For our English Language Learners of all ages can benefit of a listening activity as they color the worksheets.
Teacher: Find the bear! Color it brown.
Find the Christmas tree! Color it green.

Or do a show and tell. Students come up to the front and describe their worksheet: This is a bear. It has a Christmas hat. It is red.

This is what I did! I wrote the word for each item on the coloring page using a wax crayon.

Then, using markers I started coloring the pictures and the word would show up. Here is my example.
So, it is just a Spelling activity for the Season. If you do yours, please show me!
