A board game fun. There is a board in colored version and black and white o adjust to your needs. All the game markers are colored. And two worksheets to complete the game.

                 Start by presenting the board. You can use the color version or the black/white. If you choose the last option, dictate the colors of Christmas items.

 Have the students name all the vocabulary words they know or show them the flashcards.

Have the game pieces ready with the clip on the back so they can stand.These are the characters available.

Have the students chose his/her character. Show the flashcards if the students are not familiar with them.

Teacher: Who do want to be?

Student 1: ELF. I want to be the ELF.

Introduce the worksheet you will be using. The students will color or draw the item of the board where they land after throwing the dice. They can do this individually or in pairs. The game ends when a student is the first one to color all the worksheet.

Looking through my clip art files I found these cute presents. I thought of making a coloring book, to review color and numbers 1 to 20. Students have to read in order to color correctly.

I made mine and put a book ring instead of binding it.

For reviewing all the numbers I made big cutouts of the presents. You can use them on the board. I also included the number and the word.

Students can also play matching all the words, numbers and presents on the floor.

What is Christmas without the Nativity Scene? I found this lovely clip art. Start with Flashcards to introduce the people of the Nativity Scene.

Teacher: Who is this?

Students: She is Mary.

I cut a flap of an old box and glued the stable cutout. I left it very rustic but you can decorate to make it prettier. You can also dictate the clothes of each person. 

Teacher: Look at Joseph! His tunic is blue.

Teacher: What color is Mary's tunic?

Student: It is pink.

I printed all the people onto skin colored cardboard and colored their clothes.  But you can print it onto white cardboard as well. Students can be assigned a person and color as desired. To make them stand I placed a clip that I opened.

Or use a plastic plate or paper plate to make a Nativity Scene to hang in class. I cut a hole in the midlle to make the chracters stand out.

Have the students in groups make their own Nativity Scene.

I also included a pocket chart to review all the people in the Scene.

Thanksgiving Activities for Elementary English Language Learners

Thanksgiving ! First blog post for Thanksgiving. Resources very hard to find that can suit EFL/ESL students at this age. It is a Holiday that doesn't say anything to them, but as Language is Culture, it is something that we should teach. I used to have a Thanksgiving day, and all the resources were guided into reviewing previous lessons, recycle vocabulary  besides eating  Thanksgiving food, such as apple pie, turkey sandwiches, that was more less what I could find in my hometown for the Holiday.

               A dress up Pilgrims to review clothes vocabulary.

Then make puppets using toilet paper rolls !

I made this big wreath with a paper plate that is used for placing cakes.

Cut a hole in the middle. Have the students paint the wreath or leave it plain. Students will color each item and glue them as they wish. Then, have each student come to the front to show his/her wreath and describe all the items. They can take it home or display in class.

Let´s review the parts of the body with a turkey.

First have the students color the parts of the body of the turkey that will have to be glued. It is a good idea to have your own template ready and colored to put up on the board to guide the students.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s head. Color it brown.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s body. Color it brown.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s beak. Color it yellow.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s waddle. Color it red.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s wings. Color them brown.

Teacher: Look at the turkey´s feathers. Color number one pink. Color number two orange. Color number three purple. Color number four gray. Color number five red. Color number six green. Color number seven yellow. Color number eight blue.

And Finally, look at the turkey and color the legs orange.

Have the students then cut out all the pieces and start gluing them starting with the feathers, the head, the body, the beak, the wings and the waddle.There is a template with numbers, so the students have to match a feather number to a feather word in order to paste it. Then move on to glue each body part.

I had them cut the whole turkey and place it on a poster board or a large construction paper. I added the body parts to trace, cut and glue to the turkey.

A fun and easy craft. I made a colored and a black and white version. I punched a hole and used twig and yarn for the knot.

Halloween Resources for Elementary ELL

Label the cards. Review face and body vocabulary besides the clothes of these Halloween children. I made two size labels. Laminate  or place each one into a plastic sheet and they can write all the words instead of gluing.

I see Coloring Book.  Some teachers see coloring as a waste of time but it has many advantages. It improves the student´s handwriting. They can learn how to be patient, to focus on their work, to concentrate. It stimulates creativity and self- expression. 

Candy Corn Color Words. Just a simple worksheet that children color as indicated. 

Then have them cut all the candy corns. 

Say a new way to put a candy corn together.

Teacher: pink, white, orange.

This is a good listening activity. But turn it into speaking as a student says another option and the class builds the candy corn as said. They can do this in small group and paste it onto cardboard for decoration.

A set of Flashcards to introduce and assist in learning the Halloween words. Just print them. I made them small so it is easy to carry from one class to another.

Make a grid on the board, on one side the letter and on the other the number.

Say a letter and number combination:

Teacher: D4

Students: bag ! 

Use the template and make bottle caps letters to write the Halloween words.

I made a Haunted House! I glued it onto a shoe box and all the characters I placed them on the biggest clip I found.

This is the teacher´s version for reviewing prepositions.

Place the characters and say a sentence.

Teacher: The cat is behind the house. Continue with the other Halloween children.

Then ask questions:

Teacher: Where is the ghost ?

Students: He is in front of the house.

Hand in the student´s version. Have them make a poster by putting up their own version of the Haunted House. They will have to write some sentences and present it to the class. It can be done individually or in groups.

The Pocket chart ! They work as visuals for students to make connections in reading. They can associate sentences to pictures by themselves or in small groups.

A nice memory game. But I also made a witch that can be fed with the Halloween words. I glued her onto the tap of the shoe box that I used for the Haunted House.

Play the concentration card game using Halloween flashcards, or the old game Go Fish:  I usually print 4 copies of the cards and paste them onto black construction paper.   In groups of 4, students sit in a circle and take turning asking each other a question. Do you have (a ghost)?  If the answer is YES, the student hands in the card and the students that asked makes a pair and put it away on his/her pile. If the answer is NO, the student doesn´t get a card and the turn is for another student in the circle. The winner is the student that makes more pairs.

 Another book with the Halloween characters on cars.

I added puppets to make a running race with the puppets and assign first, second place to review the ordinal numbers.

The Matching cards are fun to play. 

I got the idea to make colored plates because buying a set of plates in each color is too much money. I got small paper plates and colored the inner circle in each. Then it is just sort the cards in each plate.

  And just pairing all the cards is a good reading activity.

Play Bingo with the cards! Hand in a Spinner to each student and have them write any color and Halloween noun combination and play the Bingo game.
