Future plans: Going to with Weekend Plans small cards

These illustrated activity cards are perfect for practicing future plans with “going to” in a meaningful and engaging way. Students can use the cards to talk about their weekend plans, holiday plans, and future intentions while developing speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Weekend Plans Chain

This is a speaking activity. Have students stand in a line or circle. The chain can be as long as you feel comfortable managing in your classroom.

Student 1 starts by looking at a card and saying:

"This weekend, I am going to study English."

Student 2 repeats Student 1's sentence and adds a new one:

"She is going to study English, and I am going to play football."

Student 3 repeats the previous plans and adds another activity:

"She is going to study English. He is going to play football, and I am going to eat out at a restaurant."

The chain continues around the class with each student repeating the previous plans and adding a new future activity from their card. Students can also ask:

"What are you going to do next weekend?"

To provide additional grammar practice, encourage students to create negative sentences using the cards:

"I am not going to play football."
"I am not going to eat out at a restaurant."
"She is not going to drive."

This activity helps students practice affirmative and negative forms of "going to.

Future Plans Bingo

Display a selection of the future plans small cards on the board or place them on a table where all students can see them. Give each student a copy of the Bingo template from the resource. Students choose eight activities from the cards and write complete sentences using going to on the lines provided.

Once all students have completed their bingo cards, shuffle the small cards and draw them one at a time. Show a card or say a sentence aloud using the future tense.

Students listen carefully and cover or mark the matching sentence on their bingo sheet. Continue calling out activities until a student has all eight sentences covered and calls out “Bingo!”

My Perfect Weekend Poster

Display all the activity cards on the board or table. Students choose six activities they would like to include in their My Perfect Weekend Poster. They can either cut and glue the cards onto their poster or draw the activities themselves.

Next, students write sentences describing when they are going to do each activity. Encourage them to use complete sentences with the future form “going to.”

When the posters are finished, students present them to the class. This provides meaningful practice with future plans, weekend activities, days of the week, speaking, and writing skills.

Expanding Sentences with Future Plans

Give each student a small activity card from the resource. Student A keeps the picture card and writes a sentence about the activity using going to.

When Student A finishes, they pass the card and sentence to Student B.

Student B uses a red pen and adds as many extra details as possible to make the sentence longer and more interesting.

Students can add:  People, Places, Times, Dates, Reasons, Adjectives, Transportation, Weather details-

They may also write negative sentences such as:

When everyone finishes, compare the original sentences with the expanded versions. The pair that successfully adds the most meaningful words and details wins the challenge.
