Halloween Flashcards

Introduce Halloween vocabulary with these colorful flashcards! Students can learn  common Halloween words such as skeleton, pumpkin, candy corn, ghost, bat, mummy, spider, cat, zombie, werewolf, devil, Frankenstein, witch, and Dracula. Use the cards for vocabulary presentation, memory games, matching activities, speaking practice, or bulletin board displays. 

Label the clothes on the Witch!

Display a Halloween flashcard and ask students to identify and label the clothing items they can see. For example, with the Witch card, students can label the hat, belt, dress, and boots.

The best part is that this labeling activity can be done with any flashcard in the resource. 

Labeling Body Parts with a Dry-Erase Marker

 Place any Halloween flashcard from the resource inside a clear plastic sheet protector. Students use a dry-erase marker to label the body parts directly on the plastic. When they finish, they can erase the words and use the same card again.

This activity works with any character in the set. 🎃👻🧙‍♀️🦇

Label, Cut, and Glue Activity

Using the word labels included in the resource, students first trace the vocabulary words, then cut them out, and finally glue them next to the correct body parts or clothing items on the character.

Students can work individually, in pairs, or in small groups as they identify and match each word to the correct part of the picture.

The labeling cards included in the resource can be used with any of the Halloween characters, allowing you to easily adapt the activity for review.

 Picture Dictionary.

 Hand in the 3 pages for making the picture dictionary. It is a good idea to do this in groups. This is a cut and paste activity.

I love tracing cards. It is a spelling activity that can be done using the clear plastic sheet. Just as some native language students learn to trace words in Preschool some ESL learners benefits from tracing.

I made another set of tracing cards that can work as coloring cards. Practice coloring the body parts and/or the clothes.

Halloween accordion book

I made a smaller version of the tracing cards to create an accordion book. First, glue one card onto another.

Then, I folded all the cards into an accordion. 

I traced the cover onto cardboard to make the other part of the book. I glued the first page onto the cover and the last one onto the cardboard.

After coloring and assembling the Halloween characters, students can practice reading with their finished accordion books. 

ABC Order Halloween Activity

This Halloween ABC Order activity will use the Halloween flashcards from the resource. Students identify each picture, write the corresponding word, and then place all the words in alphabetical order on the worksheet.  It is an excellent activity for literacy centers, independent practice, early finishers, or whole-class review. 🎃📚👻

Spelling Bingo is always a fun game to play 

Use the small cards or the Big Flashcards to call the Bingo words. Students just write a playing word in each part of the spinner. They have to cross out the word that is being called if they have it.

If Spelling Bingo is not enough. Try Spelling Scrabble. I added the Scrabble letters. I printed them onto Halloween colored paper, I chose orange and purple. I did my example using the puppets, you can use any of the small cards in the resource.

I made all the characters into puppets using toilet paper rolls. Here are just a few and made a haunted house, it comes in two pages which you will have to glue to make a big one. I printed mine onto orange cardboard and colored the door, the windows and roof to review parts of the house.

Teacher: What color is the door?

Students: It’s brown!

Use the puppets to review the words.

Teacher: Who is he?

Students: He is the Mummy!

Teacher: Who is she?

Students: She is the Witch!

I also used the puppets to do prepositions practice.

Teacher: Where is the Devil?

Students: She is in front of the Haunted House!

 Teacher: Where is Frankenstein?

Students: He is behind the Haunted House!

Teacher: Where is the Witch?

Students: She is in the Haunted House!

Or have the students write about where the characters are.

Halloween Numbers Board Game

This Halloween-themed board game is a fun way to review numbers 1–20 . Students take turns rolling a die and moving along the board. When they land on a number, they say the number aloud.  The “Go Again” spaces add extra excitement. The game can be played in small groups, encouraging speaking. 

I taped an opened clip behind each game piece to make it stand as a marker.

Use the House and the family flashcards to make a grid that can look like a house on the board.

Teacher: Who is she?

Student: She’s Mother.

Teacher: Where is she?

Student: She’s in the bathroom.

Say a place and the students say the family member and then do the opposite.

Model and have students make plural sentences.

Teacher: The cousins are in the bathroom.

Student: The brothers are in the bedroom.

Teacher: Who are in the dining room?

Student: The aunts!

Teacher: Where are the babies?

Student: They are in the living room.

I made this craft house to use for speaking purpose using prepositions.

It comes in two parts to make a bigger house to display to the class.

Use it to make sentences with prepositions. Assemble one or several houses for the class.

Teacher: Put the brother in front of the house. Put the uncle next to the house. Put the mother next to the house.

I opened the windows and doors to review more prepositions.

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: He is behind the window.

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: She is in the house.

Students can make sentences: Brother is in front of the house. Mother is next to the house. Grandpa is between Mother and Grandma.

              Print the Rooms in a house to use with the family members.

I made a house out of file folder. It is easier to carry around and play.  

Label the rooms in the house. (LABELING)

The family members are in the house. Dictate where the members are.

Teacher: Aunt is in the bedroom. The cousin is in the bathroom. Grandma is in the living room. Father is in the dining room. The baby is in the kitchen.

Ask questions:

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: She’s in the bathroom.

Teacher: Who is in the living room?

Student: Grandma is.

Family adjectives and body parts for ESL

Adjectives can be used for describing the family members, but let’s start with young and old. Contrast the youngest and the oldest of this family, the babies and the grandparents.

Teacher: Who is she ?

Students: The baby !

Teacher: She is young!

Teacher: Who is she ?

Students: Grandma !

Teacher: She is old!

Sort the flashcards as young or old.

Teacher: Point to the brother. Is he young or old?

Students: Young ! He is young.

Teacher: Who is the oldest?

Students: Grandpa is the oldest.

Teacher: Who is the youngest?

Students: The baby is the youngest.

Teacher: Who is the older, Mother or sister?

Students: Mother is the older.

Teacher: Who is the younger, father or brother?

Students: Brother is younger.

More adjectives  for family members can be introduced related to the hair, such as long-short, curly-straight, and color. State that for describing hair it is length, style and color. Play as a game by drawing a grid on the board and placing the flashcards in random order.

First ask questions.

Teacher: Look at A3! Who is she?

Students: Grandma!

Teacher: What color is her hair?

Students: gray.

Teacher: Is her hair long or short?

Students: short.

Teacher:  Grandma has short gray hair.

Then, say a letter and number combination and have students say the adjectives.

Teacher: B2!

Students: Cousin! Short straight black hair.

Or try the opposite.

Teacher: short straight and blond hair

Students: C2!

Then, do the male hair which is easier.

Teacher: Who is Number 3?

Students: Brother!

Teacher: Tell me about his hair.

Students: He has short straight blond hair.

Teacher: Guess! He has short curly gray hair

Students: Grandpa!

Sort the family members in tall and short.

Teacher: Who is tall?

Students: Father! Mother! Grandma! Grandpa! Uncle! Aunt!

Teacher: Who is short?

Students: the babies! The cousins! Brother and sister!

Have the students order the family members from the tallest to the shortest.

Ask questions.

Teacher: Who is the tallest?

Students: father!

Teacher: Who is the shortest?

Students: the baby brother!

Teacher: Who is taller, the brother or the sister?

Students: the brother!

Teacher: Who is shorter, mother or grandma?

Students: grandma!

Looking at all the flashcards together. I thought of reviewing this and these would be good. Model sentences.

Teacher: This is the sister.

Students: This is the uncle.

Teacher: These are the grandmas.

Students: These are the cousins.

Review body parts using the flashcards and worksheets.

Here is a set of worksheets to review the facial features of the family members suing adjectives. They can be used to complete as you dictate, the students can complete and then present to the class as a speaking opportunity.

Make the students use the adjectives big or small to complete the family member’s faces.

Teacher: Sister has small green eyes, a big nose, a small mouth and big ears. Her hair is short curly and blond.

More Worksheets to review adjectives for describing hair.

Play Guess WHO ? game. Give the template to a pair of students. Have them color the hair and/or eyes. Student 1 will ask the questions and student 2 will pick a family member to be guessed.

Student1: Does the person have brown hair?

Student 2: Yes!

 Student1: Does the person have straight hair?

Student 2: NO!

Student1: Does the person have curly hair?

Student 2: Yes!

Student1: Does the person have short or long hair?

Student 2: long!

Student1: Is it the aunt?

Student 2: Yes!

Play BINGO! I made a Bingo worksheet. Have the students color in any way they want, that will be the Bingo sheet. The Bingo cards are for you, color them like mine. Place them in a bag and start calling bingo.

Teacher: Sister has blond hair.

The students that have the sister with blond hair can cross her hair out.

The winner is the one that crosses out all the hair and eyes from these three family members.
