 The weather was — ESL lesson on the simple past of “to be” with weather vocabulary. Includes examples, games, worksheets, and speaking practice for beginner English learners. Understanding the **simple past of the verb “to be”** is essential for young ESL learners — especially when describing conditions like the weather. This lesson uses weather vocabulary (to help students practise **“was” and “were”** in meaningful sentences. 

There are several flashcards included in the resource to review the simple past of to be related to the weather for ESL learners.

Teacher: How was the weather?

Students: It was windy!

Here is an example on using them on the board to say how the weather was yesterday as new grammar point to teach. 

Teacher: What’s the weather?

Students: windy!

Teacher: Today is windy. (write in down and write each word in a different color.)

Teacher: What’s the weather?

Students: sunny!

Teacher: Yesterday was sunny. (write in down and write each word in a different color.)

Have the students contrast each weather weather in simple present and simple past using the worksheet.

Ask more questions using the flashcards.

     Yes/ No questions using the flashcards.

Weather vocabulary activity in the simple past tense for Questions and Sentence formation.

        Have the students write more sentences using the flashcards.

Days of the week strips to create the Forecast on the board along with weather cards.

Have the students talk about the weather yesterday. I used the days of the week to make a small calendar on the board.

Teacher: What day was yesterday?

Students: Tuesday!

Teacher: How was the weather on Tuesday?

Students: It was humid! (Underline was in each sentence)

I made weather strips to make a forecast on the board.

Write a Weather Forecast. Use all the small cards.

Have the students write sentences on their notebooks following the structure: On Wednesday it was wet. It wasn’t hot. Or It was a cloudy day on Wednesday. Use any structure that you are working on. Give out the small worksheet to create the forecast.

The weather goes on in other cities.

Teacher: What was the weather like in Mexico City?

Students: It was cold!

Or use the flashcards for other countries.

Teacher: What was the weather like in Venezuela?

Students: It was rainy!

Do the same sorting on a desk or on the floor. Students can check on the internet the weather yesterday and sort all the countries, I just did a small example.

Use the small cards for writing sentences on the notebooks.

I am trying to create game boards for every product. Print this weather ESL board game. 

Students love an extra time for playing on their own. I tape a bended clip behind each game marker to make it stand. The game board has 4 colors: red, yellow, blue and green. I wrote 2 specific questions depending on where they land: How was the weather? and How is the weather? In order to have students contrast between both tenses.

This is how my Printable game board turned out.

In this era of recycling I see lots of last year books going to the trash or the teachers not knowing what to do with them. I have posted some ways on how to recycle them. Here is another example. Cut out the pictures and have the students do spelling using plastic plates and dry erase markers, where you can easily erase the words.

Or use a fly swatter with a rectangle cut in the middle to read the words.

Halloween Flashcards

Introduce Halloween vocabulary with these colorful flashcards! Students can learn  common Halloween words such as skeleton, pumpkin, candy corn, ghost, bat, mummy, spider, cat, zombie, werewolf, devil, Frankenstein, witch, and Dracula. Use the cards for vocabulary presentation, memory games, matching activities, speaking practice, or bulletin board displays. 

Label the clothes on the Witch!

Display a Halloween flashcard and ask students to identify and label the clothing items they can see. For example, with the Witch card, students can label the hat, belt, dress, and boots.

The best part is that this labeling activity can be done with any flashcard in the resource. 

Labeling Body Parts with a Dry-Erase Marker

 Place any Halloween flashcard from the resource inside a clear plastic sheet protector. Students use a dry-erase marker to label the body parts directly on the plastic. When they finish, they can erase the words and use the same card again.

This activity works with any character in the set. 🎃👻🧙‍♀️🦇

Label, Cut, and Glue Activity

Using the word labels included in the resource, students first trace the vocabulary words, then cut them out, and finally glue them next to the correct body parts or clothing items on the character.

Students can work individually, in pairs, or in small groups as they identify and match each word to the correct part of the picture.

The labeling cards included in the resource can be used with any of the Halloween characters, allowing you to easily adapt the activity for review.

 Picture Dictionary.

 Hand in the 3 pages for making the picture dictionary. It is a good idea to do this in groups. This is a cut and paste activity.

I love tracing cards. It is a spelling activity that can be done using the clear plastic sheet. Just as some native language students learn to trace words in Preschool some ESL learners benefits from tracing.

I made another set of tracing cards that can work as coloring cards. Practice coloring the body parts and/or the clothes.

Halloween accordion book

I made a smaller version of the tracing cards to create an accordion book. First, glue one card onto another.

Then, I folded all the cards into an accordion. 

I traced the cover onto cardboard to make the other part of the book. I glued the first page onto the cover and the last one onto the cardboard.

After coloring and assembling the Halloween characters, students can practice reading with their finished accordion books. 

ABC Order Halloween Activity

This Halloween ABC Order activity will use the Halloween flashcards from the resource. Students identify each picture, write the corresponding word, and then place all the words in alphabetical order on the worksheet.  It is an excellent activity for literacy centers, independent practice, early finishers, or whole-class review. 🎃📚👻

Spelling Bingo is always a fun game to play 

Use the small cards or the Big Flashcards to call the Bingo words. Students just write a playing word in each part of the spinner. They have to cross out the word that is being called if they have it.

If Spelling Bingo is not enough. Try Spelling Scrabble. I added the Scrabble letters. I printed them onto Halloween colored paper, I chose orange and purple. I did my example using the puppets, you can use any of the small cards in the resource.

I made all the characters into puppets using toilet paper rolls. Here are just a few and made a haunted house, it comes in two pages which you will have to glue to make a big one. I printed mine onto orange cardboard and colored the door, the windows and roof to review parts of the house.

Teacher: What color is the door?

Students: It’s brown!

Use the puppets to review the words.

Teacher: Who is he?

Students: He is the Mummy!

Teacher: Who is she?

Students: She is the Witch!

I also used the puppets to do prepositions practice.

Teacher: Where is the Devil?

Students: She is in front of the Haunted House!

 Teacher: Where is Frankenstein?

Students: He is behind the Haunted House!

Teacher: Where is the Witch?

Students: She is in the Haunted House!

Or have the students write about where the characters are.

Halloween Numbers Board Game

This Halloween-themed board game is a fun way to review numbers 1–20 . Students take turns rolling a die and moving along the board. When they land on a number, they say the number aloud.  The “Go Again” spaces add extra excitement. The game can be played in small groups, encouraging speaking. 

I taped an opened clip behind each game piece to make it stand as a marker.

Student: She’s Mother.

Say a place and the students say the family member and then do the opposite.

Model and have students make plural sentences.

Student: The aunts!

Teacher: Where are the babies?

Student: They are in the living room.

I made this craft house to use for speaking purpose using prepositions.

It comes in two parts to make a bigger house to display to the class.

Use it to make sentences with prepositions. Assemble one or several houses for the class.

Teacher: Put the brother in front of the house. Put the uncle next to the house. Put the mother next to the house.

I opened the windows and doors to review more prepositions.

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: He is behind the window.

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: She is in the house.

Students can make sentences: Brother is in front of the house. Mother is next to the house. Grandpa is between Mother and Grandma.

              Print the Rooms in a house to use with the family members.

I made a house out of file folder. It is easier to carry around and play.  

Label the rooms in the house. (LABELING)

The family members are in the house. Dictate where the members are.

Teacher: Aunt is in the bedroom. The cousin is in the bathroom. Grandma is in the living room. Father is in the dining room. The baby is in the kitchen.

Ask questions:

Teacher: Where is the cousin?

Student: She’s in the bathroom.

Teacher: Who is in the living room?

Student: Grandma is.
