                                  Let’s start with Flashcards.

                           Introduce Grammar points.

Tracer book: It helps extend the vocabulary. There is a black and white version for the students to color and create their own book to take home.
When the students finish tracing the sentences on their books, start reading. Assign a color to identify each sight word.

Teacher: Circle the word “it” red.
Teacher: Circle the word “is” blue.
Teacher: Circle the word “a” yellow.
Help the students assemble the book. I made this one by punching a hole on the side and connected using a metal ring. Read again using a straw as a pointer, have them look for specific words.
Teacher: Look for the word “Spring”. Use your pointer.

A set of matching words and pictures cards.
Students in groups can match each picture to each word.
Another game: Have the students place all the cards face up on the table. Say a word and have them find the word and the picture.

Teacher: Find “sun”.
Students: sun!  Student shows the picture and the word.

Paper plates are great for sorting the vocabulary words into seasons. Write each Season word on each paper plate.

I found this game and gave it a try. Let me know if you liked it.

There is a sunscreen lotion clipart to make a card holder. You can use it to play a guessing game by slowly taking a card out and having the children guess what it is.
Spelling BINGO! Spelling is related to the students’ reading and writing abilities. Give students the template and ask them to write 6 of all the words of their choice. You can use the matching cards as calling cards. Students cross out the words called out. The winner is the first one to cross the 6 words.

Some worksheets for extra practice.

Seasons and verbs for ESL

In many books it is under the label of Seasonal Activities. This is the last blog post related to the Seasons Unit. I have posted Seasons and Months, Seasons and Weather, Seasons and Clothes, Seasons and Nature. Just continue scrolling the blog posts to check them out! Everything is under one product:

There are many verbs related to each Season. First, here are the flashcards.

seasons flashcards

Sort the Flashcards into Seasons on the blackboard.
Teacher: What season is this?
Students: It is Winter.
Teacher: What is he doing?
Students: He is building a snowman.

Place each Season Flashcard on the blackboard. Have the students look into all the flashcards and find the Activities(Verbs) that can be done in each Season.
Teacher: What season is this?
Students: It is Fall.
Teacher: What do we do in the Fall?
Students: Play with the leaves, sit on the pumpkins, rake the leaves, and walk.

Do the same with the other Seasons.

You can use many Verb Tenses with the flashcards. Start with CAN. Use the flashcards to model questions and sentences on the board.

                                        Or model Present Continuous.

Or you can introduce the simple past tense questions.
Maybe you can review the future.

As in all the Seasons Units, there is a Sorting Worksheet.

And just two worksheets.
Students complete the worksheet. Then have them cut each picture and glue next to the sentences on their notebooks.

The other worksheet will be used as a BINGO template as well. Using either the colored flashcards placed on the board or the small cards used for the sorting, students write the activities that can be done and the ones that can’t be done in each Season, completing the worksheet in an allotted amount of time, maybe 5 minutes. Some students will have more verbs than others, but that is the idea. Then, announce the BINGO! Use the colored flashcards to call the Verbs. The students will cross out the verb word if they have it written down. The winner is the first one to cross out all the words.

Seasons and Nature

This is the fourth part of the Seasons Resources. LINK:https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasons-Theme-Resources-for-Elementary-ESL-1744981

Start with the trees flashcards in different seasons.

trees flashcards in different seasons.

Place each Season Flashcard on the board and have the students name them. Then, have the students sort the trees into each season. Have them notice how they change with each season.
Teacher: What season is this ?
Students: It’s Winter!
Teacher: look at the tree. What happened with the leaves?
Students: There are no leaves!

And again the worksheet to sort the trees.
Cut the trees from the worksheet and make a small craft. I cut the toilet paper tubes into smaller rolls. Then, cut two slits on each one and place the tree. Ask questions:
Teacher: What season is this ?
Students: It's Winter.
Teacher: Dos the tree have leaves ?
Students: No, it doesn't.

Introduce the Nature vocabulary using the flashcards.

Then, have the students sort them into each Season.
Teacher: What is this ?
Students: It’s a polar bear.
Teacher: What season do you see a polar bear ?
Students: In the Winter!
And another worksheet to sort the nature vocabulary.

Roll ,read and write (Spelling game). I saw this game on the mailbox.com. I gave it a twist. Distribute a die and the templates to each group. Hand in the nature cards template and the die template. Explain that each number represented on the die stands for the number of letters in a word. In each group, the students take turns to roll the die and choose a card from the template that has the corresponding number of letters that is on the die rolled. The student has to make a check mark on that word. The student reads the card to the group and they have to write the word under the corresponding column. Each word can be written only once.
Watch the videos on how to play.

This is an old game that I used to play 20 years ago. Yes, a very old game!! The aim is to review prepositions. I prepared a set of instructions for each team and some cutouts.

Make 2 groups.  When you say, "Go!" the students must read the slips of paper
and get the necessary cutouts to complete the task.
The first group who puts the proper number of things in the correct location wins.

Here are the four trees that the four groups should end up with. I made a blank template for you to write the instructions or even better, the students can write the instructions for themselves or for another group to accomplish.

The cutouts can be used to sort them into Seasons using the McDonalds french fres container.
