Weather Unit Worksheets for Elementary ELLs

Provide meaningful practice of the Weather Unit through matching, reading, coloring, drawing, and writing activities. These worksheets reinforce vocabulary and sentence structure in a variety of formats to meet diverse learning needs.

Reviewing weather words through worksheets helps ELLs by reinforcing vocabulary recall and spelling through writing and matching activities.

Practice answering in complete sentences the questions: What color is it? a foundational communication skill.


Students find and circle common weather words in a word search grid. This works spelling and visual recognition of weather vocabulary.


Build sentence structure and reading comprehension by connecting visuals with coloring.


Apply vocabulary in context (e.g., “It is windy”).


Students label the clothes that a bear is wearing in the cold weather. They will identify each item and write the correct word next to it.


In this worksheet, students look at simple weather-related images and answer yes/no questions and more such as: “Is this a cloud?” – Yes, it is.


Students practice writing complete sentences about the weather while using picture clues for support.


Build sentence writing using visual context.


Strengthen independent work habits and prepare for basic assessments. Students can cut up each frog image and write a short text for each one on their notebooks.


Questionnaire: “What’s your favorite weather?” using the worksheet.

Invite students to walk around the classroom and ask their classmates the question: “What’s your favorite weather?”
They record each classmate’s name and answer on the sheet.

After collecting answers, have a short class discussion or graph the results on the board to practice data interpretation (e.g., “3 students like rainy weather”).

This activity Encourages speaking and listening in a real communicative context.

Body Unit Imperative with Verbs Card Game

Use the imperative + body part 32 cards because it brings together language, movement, and fun. Students see and act out verbs and body parts, making it easier to remember new words.

Children learn better when they move. Total Physical Response (TPR) helps them understand and remember language through actions. Put the cards into a bag or box. Take out a card and give the instruction: hands up!

 
Students love to follow commands, race to respond, or take turns being the teacher. The student can read the instruction on the card: Put your right leg up.

Kids practice listening skills and responding to instructions, which is key for classroom routines such as: Raise your hand!

Students can use the cards in in pairs or in groups to give each other the instruction. It is a way for the children to communicate, take turns, and support each other while learning.

You can use these cards as a classroom tool (e.g., “Hands up!” or “Sit down.”), reinforcing daily routines in English.

Easy to Use in Multiple Activities, such as games, songs, circle time, warm-ups, and transitions—they’re super flexible!

Beach Unit printable Book

Print the full-color version of “The Frog is Going to the Beach” as a way to develop grammar and vocabulary in a meaningful way.

The bright and engaging illustrations help students understand the meaning of the text, even if they are still learning to decode or read independently.

Each page uses the structure “The frog is going to...” in a natural and repetitive way. The visual cues make it easier for learners to understand “be going to” for future plans. The same goes for the printable coloring version.


Reading Activity Idea with the Book. Start doing the Echo Reading (Teacher Models, Students Repeat).  Read each page aloud while pointing to the words. Students repeat after you, focusing on pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm.


 Benefit: Builds fluency and helps students internalize the sentence pattern: “The frog is going to build a sandcastle”

Face unit and the Numbers 1 to 20

Learners better retain language when words are used in context rather than isolation. Repetition is key for ELLs, and integrating numbers with the face unit allows for natural repetition of both sets of vocabulary through games and activities.

The children with a number flashcards integrate Multiple Vocabulary Areas.  Students learn and review both numbers (1–20) and descriptive face vocabulary (e.g., curly, short, brown hair).

It can promote sentence building: “The boy with 10 has short, curly, black hair.”


Describing people on the cards encourages oral production. Have the students sort the flashcards by hair color.

Teacher: Who has blond hair?

Students: Number 8 and 15 have blond hair.

 

Another sorting activity is according to the hair length: long or short.


Children see diverse appearances represented, which builds self-esteem and social-emotional learning. This time students can sort the hair into curly and straight.

Students: Number 5 has straight hair. Number 13 has curly hair.


The small cards are the perfect size for hands-on activities, individual use, or small group games. The same sorting activities can be done in on their tables. They can write their own sorting criteria.


Sentence Building Activities can be done as they sort the cards.

Students: Number 17 has long hair. Number 14 has short hair.


The small cards are used as an easy to repeat practice with more sorting, such as curly and straight.


Practicing same vocabulary using different adjectives at the same time: Number 18 has short, straight and brown hair.


Worksheets help reinforce the numbers vocabulary, it can me matching the numeral to the word or just write the teen number words.

The worksheets provide structured repetition, which is essential for language retention. This is a read and color practice. Focus: Listening or reading comprehension


ELLs gain confidence when they can complete tasks on their own, even simple ones. This is the face labeling review.


Worksheets engage students in reading and writing sentences.


Teachers can use worksheets to check understanding of vocabulary and concepts taught.


Students cut out the picture and glue them on the correct section of the sorting worksheets. There is also long and short.

Board games create a low-pressure environment for practicing English. Students use target vocabulary and sentence structures repeatedly while having fun: “This is number 15. She has long, straight blond hair.”

Play Guess Who? Using the mats.

Player 1 picks a number from the mat.  

Player 2 has to guess which card it is: Is it a girl?

Player 1: Yes, it is.

Player 2: Does she have long or short hair?

Player 1: Long hair.

Player 2: Is the hair brown and long?

Player 1: yes, it is.

Player 2: Is it Number 19?

Player 1: yes, it is.

Beach Unit Games

Print the beach-themed board game and play with a twist. Each time they land on an item, they "collect" it in an imaginary beach template that has been assigned to each player.
At the end, they list or draw the things in their beach and describe them: “I have a towel and sunglasses.”

Spelling Activities Matter: Learners internalize the correct spelling of new beach-related words (e.g., bucket, mask) by physically constructing them.

Develop early reading and vocabulary skills with this matching card game. Students will match beach-themed word cards (e.g., sandcastle) with corresponding picture cards to build vocabulary recognition, strengthen spelling awareness, and support reading fluency.

Students will review and reinforce their beach vocabulary by writing words on their own Bingo boards and listening carefully during a picture-word calling game using the cards from the previous activity.

The blank Bingo boards provided are for students to write in 8 beach-themed words. Prepare a master list of the words you want to use. As each word is called, students check their boards. If they have the word, they cover it with a token. The first student to cover all 8 words and call out “BINGO!” wins. You can keep playing any other day, they just save the board that is already prepared.

 Matching Words. Lay out the picture cards on one side of the table and the word cards on the other. Students take turns matching the correct word to each image.


Animals on the Beach – Sentence Building Game. Students will use a variety of animal-on-the-beach picture cards to create complete and meaningful sentences using a variety of word cards (nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and more).

Students will write their sentences on their notebooks and share to the class or a partner. The teacher or peers can help check for grammar and sentence structure.
