Students don’t just learn the names of furniture (like bed); they also practice prepositions of place (in, on, under, next to, behind), which are essential for describing real-life locations. Prepositions can be tricky for Elementary ELLs because they are abstract. Using fun clipart of a monster and a bed makes the concept visual, memorable, and easy to grasp with these printable activities.

 Story Chain with Flashcards of preposition of spatial relationship. Place bed and monster flashcards on the board. Start a story here. They must add sentences and write the story as students give more sentences. They draw what is being said and all the sentences for the story.

Mystery Bag Flashcards. Put flashcards inside an envelope or bag (glue the label included). Students pull one without looking, then describe it without saying the name (“The Monster in the bedroom. It’s not behind the bed.”). Class guesses the card.

Small cards are even more flexible than big flashcards, since they’re easy to handle, shuffle, and move around.

Picture-to-Word Match: Have students match pictures of furniture items to the corresponding word cards. Just cut the words out of each card.

Card Toss. Lay out small cards on the table. Students toss a beanbag or token onto a card. They must say the word or make a sentence with that card to “win” it.

Glue the printable onto a lunch bag and use for speaking!!

Cut and paste Monster Worksheet. Worksheet shows a bed). Give Instructions like: “The red monster is in front of the bed” This builds listening/reading comprehension and creativity.Label with the preposition words.

Build a bedroom. Provide the printable outline of a bedroom. Students place their Monster in the right spot bed, door, etc. Provide cutout monsters. Students cut and glue the monster in the correct place according to what you dictate. I opened the spaces before gluing the worksheets onto a colored paper.

Read & Color Worksheets. Students must both read and follow instructions carefully.

Fill in the Blank Worksheets. Sentences with missing prepositions.

Race Board Game. A board game with a path. Each space shows the monster in a different position. When students land, they must say a full sentence: “The monster is on the bed.”

Roll & Place.Students get a die with prepositions. They roll and move a monster cutout around a printed bed image: “The monster is behind the bed.”

Spin & Place Game. Ready the printable spinner with prepositions (on, in, under, next to, behind).  Students spin, then place a monster cutout on the correct position around a printed bed. Can be played individually or in pairs.

Cut-and-Play Matching Mats. Students cut out monster pieces and match them according to preposition. Reusable if laminated. Use the mats for early finishers.

Farm Prepositions of Place Activities with a Rooster and Barn

Students should review prepositions of place because they are essential for describing location. Using concrete visuals like a rooster and a barn makes abstract grammar more meaningful, while also reinforcing vocabulary and sentence structure in this printable resource for Elementary ESL.

Prepositions describe relationships in space, and flashcards make these abstract concepts concrete and easy to understand. Have students build sentences for each flashcard in this farm theme. Give points to the students that create the longest sentence.

Students can see the same prepositions in different contexts, as in this Draw and Write Activity. Dictate what students have to draw and students follow instructions and then show the flashcard for correction.

Teacher: Draw a red barn. There is a rooster next to the barn.

Flashcards can be used for guessing activities. One student picks a flashcard secretly. Others ask yes/no questions: “Is the rooster in front of the barn?” until they guess correctly.

Place the barn flashcard on the table, open slots for next to, under and cut the door of the barn. Learners can describe where the rooster or follow a command.

Play (Command following) with the small cards. The teacher calls out instructions using cards and directions, for example “Bring me the card with the rooster behind the barn.” Students race to identify and grab the correct card. The first student to bring it back scores a point. Continue with different target cards each time.

Place the small cards in a line on the table. Students roll the dice that you have previously assembled and select the matching card, then give the answer. Continue rolling until all the cards have been answered.

For fast finishers have them create their own barn and animal cut-outs. Turn the barn into a 3D prop by gluing it onto a toilet paper roll. With a movable rooster cutout, students can physically place the animal in different positions. There is a colored and a b/w version.

Idea. Teacher Says – Similar to Simon Says, the teacher gives commands: “Put the rooster on the barn,” “Place the rooster on the barn,” etc. Students follow by moving their rooster cutout.

Idea. Student Leader – A student gives instructions to the class using prepositions while everyone positions their rooster.

Idea. Question & Answer Practice – One student puts the rooster in a position secretly. Others ask yes/no questions: “Is the rooster behind the barn?” until they guess correctly.

Students can either listen to the teacher’s instructions (e.g., “Draw the rooster in front of the barn”) or roll a preposition dice to decide where to place or draw the rooster.

This worksheet can be done using the dice.

There are two fill-in-the-blanks worksheets where students complete simple sentences using prepositions. These worksheets reinforce both writing and grammar.

This resource also includes a matching mat where students pair preposition flashcards with the correct word and puzzle sentence, reinforcing word-picture connections. Use the matching mat as a station.

"Creative Ways to Use Emotion Small Cards in the ELL Classroom"

The Emotions small cards are especially useful for pair and group work. Using small cards keeps lessons active, gives every learner a chance to participate, and makes vocabulary practice more fun and memorable.

 Students can play matching emotions small cards or memory by cutting the word out of each card. Then, name each emotion.

Find My Match. Give each student a small card (half the class gets words, the other half pictures). Students walk around asking: “Are you happy?” until they find their match. Once matched, pairs sit down together.

Speaking practice with the emotions small cards printables. Children can pick any card and make a sentence (“I am shocked”).

Emotion Charades. One student draws a small card without showing it. They mime the emotion. The class guesses: “You are angry!”

Emotion Wheel. Students move the wheel and says a sentence about the person shows (“He is worried”). The partner judge the sentence.

Emotion Bag. Place cards inside a bag. There is a label for your lunch bag. Students draw one and must answer your question:
Teacher: How are you today?
B: I am embarrassed!

Ask questions Yes/No questions with be using the small cards on their notebooks: Is she shocked?

Beach Prepositions Activities with Sandcastle and Crab | ESL ELL

This resource gives students a fun and meaningful way to practice prepositions in context to include in your lesson plan. Using a playful sandcastle and a red crab helps young learners visualize spatial relationships. The activities support comprehension, speaking, and sentence-building skills. Help elementary ESL/ELL learners practise spatial prepositions with fun beach-themed worksheets, flashcards, and games — sandcastle & crab included!

Teaching spatial relationships (in/on/under/next to / behind / in front of) can be challenging for young ESL learners — but using the flashcards can be helpful.

Copy Cat Writing and Drawing  Flashcard Activity. Use thin paper to place it over the top of the flash card and copy with markers and crayons. They can also copy out the prepositions.

Show your class any preposition flashcard and ask questions: Where is the crab?

Ask questions to your students, but fold the preposition word on the flash card, like I show here: 

Listen & Draw the Crab Worksheet. Students practice understanding prepositions in context. Then, show the flashcard for them to check.

Write a Sentence. Students draw a picture small card and a preposition card, then say or write a sentence (e.g., The crab is under the sandcastle.).

Roll and color the Prepositions Worksheet. A student rolls the preposition die. Depending on the preposition it lands on (e.g., on, under, next to, in front of, behind, in), they find the matching picture on the worksheet. As a speaking practice: After rolling, students say the sentence aloud (The crab is under the sandcastle.) before coloring.

Fill-in-the-blank worksheet with prepositions. Provide a word bank with prepositions (in, on, under, behind, next to, in front of) using the small cards or flashcrads from the resource.

Color-by-instruction printable worksheets for prepositions beach — very effective for ELLs because it combines reading comprehension, vocabulary, and coloring fun.

A Q&A worksheet helps students practice both forming and answering questions with prepositions. Then do a Pair Work Role-Play, where One student asks: “Where is the red crab?”The partner answers: “It is under the sandcastle.”

Read the sentence on the worksheet and draw + color the crab in the correct place on the sandcastle. It encourages careful reading and understanding of simple preposition sentences.

Sandcastle + Crab Cutouts. Teacher says: “Put the crab under the sandcastle.” Students move the crab cutout to the correct position. It builds listening comprehension and preposition vocabulary.

I also added a printable sentence puzzle set to the resource! Each puzzle piece has part of a sentence with the sandcastle and crab images. Students put the pieces together to form complete sentences, such as “The red crab is next to the sandcastle.” This activity helps learners practice reading, sentence structure, and preposition vocabulary in a hands-on way.

Students move along the path on the beach preposition board game, read the spaces, and practice prepositions in a playful way. It’s a great way to bring all the activities together and give students extra practice in a fun, cooperative format.
