Flashcards are a powerful tool when introducing the farm animals and farm life. They provide visual support, interactive learning, and repeated exposure, all essential for language acquisition.

Repeat vocabulary through activities that helps students retain new words as a way for speaking with your elementary ELLs..

Favorite farm animal graph. Place the flashcards on the board. Ask: "What is your favorite farm animal?" Have each student pick a flashcard with the animal they like the most,
and says: "My favorite farm animal is the cow."
Then have the students talk about the results.

Cat Family for Elementary ELL

This resource for ESOL teachers is included at this LINK: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pets-Unit-for-Elementary-ELL-Starters-10780015

ESOL teachers

This is an engaging way to teach family vocabulary within the pet unit!

Introduce the Cat Family. Students take turns picking a cat family member flashcard and describing them using simple sentences. (e.g., This is the father. He is big and gray.) If students already know the clothes vocabulary, expand on that: He is wearing a purple tie, a white shirt, blue pants and purple shoes.

Use the speech bubble for the students to introduce their character.

Instead of one-word answers, students learn to communicate using complete thoughts to introduce family members.

Help students talk about family members and possessions clearly (e.g., This is Jane’s grandmother).

Give students the small cards and a whiteboard with colored markers to write the names of the family members.

Worksheets incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and listening, making them effective for different learning styles.

Students write the correct family member word under each cat picture.

This is a reading comprehension worksheet where students will write the name of each cat. Then, they color the family members and on their notebooks write simple sentences (e.g., The mother cat is pink.).

More worksheets to expand the lesson plan.

Help students listen, read, and comprehend simple instructions in English by coloring within a path ending on a yarn. Teachers can give extra listening practice by asking questions: Who has the orange yarn?

Students: The baby sister cat.

A puzzle for labeling the Cats – Give several students the word part and have them match to the correct family member that other students are holding.

Cat Family Finger Puppets help students create simple dialogues and stories.
Students use the puppets to act out a conversation between family members. (Hello, I am the father cat!)
Students introduce each puppet in simple sentences. (This is the baby brother cat.)

ESL Instructor

Print the Town Unit games to create excitement and curiosity, making students more eager to learn and participate. Students repeatedly hear, see, and use town-related words, improving retention.

Town-Themed Card Game (Picture & Word). Students will connect written words with visual representations, improving retention and perfect for visual learners.

Match Pairs by spreading the picture cards and word cards face up. Players match a picture with its corresponding word. The player with the most matches wins!

Using letter tiles in your town unit gives students a hands-on way to practice spelling, phonics, and vocabulary. Students form town-related words by arranging tiles. Play Word Building Challenge: Provide students with a set of letter tiles. Say and show a town-related word ("PARK"), and students race to spell it with their tiles. Another option is to make crosswords in teams.

"Town Map Placement" Game. It builds listening & comprehension skills. It helps students process and respond to spoken instructions.
Students must think logically to place cards correctly. Students practice placing locations on a realistic town layout.

There are three printable streets as a hands-on, interactive way for students to learn prepositions, directions, and sentence structure. One student gives verbal instructions while another listens and places the buildings accordingly.

Encourages Writing Practice when your students write sentences describing their town map. One student reads or creates a sentence using a location card (e.g., “The bank is next to the supermarket”). Students take turns being the dictator and the map builder. Students take turns being the dictator and the map builder.

Encourage Speaking & Listening using a board game. The players ask and answer questions (e.g., “Where is your car?” → “My car is at the supermarket.”).

Players roll a die and move their car marker along the town-themed board. The player must say the name of the place before ending their turn.

A variation is a Question & Answer Challenge. When landing on a space, players must answer a question: “Where is your car?” → “It is at the restaurant.”

This resource, for any 2nd grade Elementary School learner, is found at this link at the TPT store: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/School-Theme-for-Elementary-ESL-1707072

2nd grade Elementary School learner

This material helps students reinforce common classroom object names (e.g., pencil, eraser, notebook) in the context of a backpack.

All your students learn in different ways, but most of them are visual learners. Use these classroom objects flashcards for any class level. Practice speaking in complete sentences. Place the flashcards in a real backpack. Model a sentence and the have a student pick a card and describe it: "I have an eraser in my backpack."

classroom objects flashcards

Use the manipulatives like the small cards included to make vocabulary learning more concrete. Cut the word out of each card to play match to each picture.

Reinforce Vocabulary with worksheets for recognizing classroom objects. Students match classroom object pictures to their correct word labels in the backpack mind map worksheet

Develop Writing Skills to encourage students to write simple sentences on the worksheets, and practice spelling.

Reinforce basic grammar by helping students understand and correctly use "Yes, I do." and "No, I don’t."

Worksheets allow students to
practice at their own pace as in this reading comprehension activity.

Spelling Bingo is a fun and interactive way to help students practice spelling classroom object names. Give your students a bingo board worksheet. There are two boards. You can use one just for writing a classroom object word. Place your calling cards into the backpack container that you can make using the templates. Students will cross out the words they hear, the first one to do so wins.

Another version is to print the blank template into different colored sheets and have the stduents complete the bingo board writing a color and a word. Place all the cards into the calling cards backpack container and start playing. The first player to cross off all the correct items on their bingo card shouts “Bingo!”

Make sure to pick the games that are right for the students that you are planning with. Make sure that you understand the games and that you know the rules to use with them.

Here is a 28-tile word-picture domino set for your School Unit Game using the words: notebook, pencil case, eraser, crayon box, glue, book, scissors. Each tile has a word on one side and a picture on the other. The goal is to match the word to the corresponding picture.

Students make crosswords using the letters tiles. Play in teams.

I invite you find tools to enhance your classroom experience and support your students' language development.
