Christmas Activities for ESL

Krasner (1999) recognized the necessity for language learners to develop not only linguistic competence but also an awareness of the culturally-appropriate features of the language

I made a Coloring and a Writing book. Students read the incomplete sentence and looking at the picture write the missing word. Students can color the picture as you dictate.
Teacher: Look at the elf! His hat is yellow and green.

A foldable accordion book. Students trace each word to create the book. You can choose the vocabulary. Then trace the Elf hat onto red or green cardboard to assemble the book.

Half card game. This a fun game that many students love. Cut all the cards in half. Have the students match each half to make a complete card on their desks as a group challenge.
As a speaking activity, hand in a half card to each student. They all stand up at your signal and walk around the classroom finding their other half and stand together. Shout stop! At any given moment. The winners are the students that got together correctly.

Labeling clothes and body (labeling). Have the students label the Christmas Characters cards. They come in color and black/white version.

More vocabulary practice with the picture and word matching cards.

A final review of Prepositions or Positional words.A set of small flashcards to review each preposition.
Teacher: Look at the reindeer! The reindeer is between the boy and the girl.Or the reindeer is between the elves.

A  Prepositions or Positional words game. The sentence association game which is fun.
There is a set of cutouts to glue onto a file folder.
Students can sort the cards.
A  Prepositions or Positional words book.Print and assemble the book or use the file on the tablets.

Help your elementary ELL students understand and use the simple past tense through meaningful contextual practice centered on town vocabulary and everyday actions. This lesson moves beyond lists — it connects grammar with real-world communication.

After reviewing the prepositions as seen on my last blog post let’s get into the simple past tense. Review the places in town with the flashcards.

I made smaller flashcards for speaking purpose. The flashcards are with people at a town building.

Nothing better than fun practice. I found a similar idea on the www.mailbox.com, There are several cards for writing sentences. This can be done in a group. Students pick four or five cards and make sentences on their notebook. The students are reminded to use more words in their sentences.

I divided a clear plastic sheet in four using duct tape as I was able to place 4 cards in one sheet.

This snakes and ladders game is for fun and for speaking. Students have to fill in with was or were/wasn’t-weren’t or use for the simple present.

Students make sentences with this printable and write them on their notebook. They can write questions and answers.

Even though some teachers say that worksheets are old fashion, I like them.

And I like to do more with more them than just filling in the blanks. Observe that I cut all the worksheet and paste on the notebook by matching the drawing to the sentences.

Help your students understand and practice the simple past tense with meaningful, context-based ESL activities! This lesson uses familiar town vocabulary and real-life actions to make the past tense easy for young learners to grasp and use.

Why the Simple Past Tense Is Important

The simple past tense is one of the first grammar structures students need for telling stories, describing past experiences, and sharing information about events. But many learners struggle because the form looks different from present tense.

Review the use of prepositions first and then show how to use them in the simple past. I created a set of long cards to place on the board or to ue in groups.

Prepositions ON-used for days of the week. Write the word on and place the days of the week long cards on the board as in a mind map.
Teacher: On Monday!
Students: On Tuesday ! (continue with more)

Now, have the students practice the use of the prepostions.
I made two size of pockets to sort the cards. This one is smaller and can be used on the notebook. This activity can be done individually or in small groups.

And I made another set of pocket a little bigger to be used as a group activity. Just make a pocket by gluing each pocket template onto cardboard and print a set of cards and have the students do the sorting .
Action picture cards showing verbs for past tense ESL activity

Or use plastic plates, you can write a preposition with a dry erase maker and students can do the sorting.

Another idea is to create a flap book, either horizontal o vertical.

These materials support fluency and consolidation.

Follow me! I will post the next part which is using the simple past tense of the verb to be and the prepositions + town.
