Calendar: days, Months, ordinal numbers cards

This resource includes essential components for teaching the calendar: cards for the days of the week, months, and ordinal numbers. Teachers can introduce, reinforce, and review calendar concepts in an engaging and organized way. The resource is easy for teachers to implement, requiring minimal preparation. When you teach the Calendar, think of it as a wonderful opportunity for building the language of math.

The use of cards allows for interactive, hands-on activities where students can manipulate the pieces to arrange the days, months, and ordinal numbers in order. Arranging the days of the week and months in order helps students develop sequencing and critical thinking skills.

 

Hand in the 7 days of the week cards to 7 students. Have them stand in line, one next to the other in the week sequence.  Do the same with the months of the year.

The colorful cards and interactive nature of the resource keep students engaged. Write in a scrambled order the days of the week on the board. Have the students come and place the correct card on each word.

It can also be done with the months of the year or the ordinal numbers.

Have the students complete a blank calendar with the days of the week cards and then with the ordinal numbers cards.

Teach: today is, yesterday was and tomorrow is using the days of the week cards on the board. Add an arrow to make the concept clear.

Learning about the parts of a calendar equips students with practical knowledge that they can use for talking about birthdays. Ask when is your birthday. Place all the month calendars on the board and have a student come and    say: My birthday is in May!


Have the students count the days in the months. Use the month model: What month is this?
Students: January!
Teacher: Count the days in This month!
Students: There are 31 days in January.

Ask the students how many days are there in each month and place the card under the similar one. Talk about February later.

Write the starting letter of the Months on the board. Have the stduents come and place the card next to each letter. Ask questions: Which months start with an M?

Students: May and March!

Hand in the months of the year cards and have the students place them backwards and say the words.


Students are now ready to talk about the date. They are able to identify and differentiate between days, months, and years, which helps them understand time progression.

Use the card set to build the Full Date.

 For example: "Today is Saturday, June, 5th, 2025."

Have students practice writing the date on the board using the cards as you dictate.

Playground Scene Diorama for Prepositions Teaching

 The Park Scene Diorama is a Hands-On Learning experience for your ESL learner. It integrates coloring, cutting, and building activities. Creating a diorama fosters creativity, giving students ownership over their learning process.

Find a box to place all the items to start playing.

Students will actively place items to practice prepositions like on, under, next to, in front of and behind. Give instructions.

Teacher: The girl is in front of the tree!

The diorama allows for sentence creation, which strengthens both oral and written English skills. Have the students write sentences as they place the items on the playground.

Flexible for group work. One student says a where something is and the other student will place it correctly on the diorama.

Student 1: The bird is in front of the seesaw.

Student 2: The tree is behind the swing.

Playground Games for Elementary ESL

The games ensure a well-rounded approach to teaching the playground vocabulary. Use these to keep students actively involved in learning.

Students must analyze and match the correct domino pieces. This game appeals to visual learners (pictures) and kinesthetic learners (handling and placing dominoes).

Add fun by setting a timer and challenge small groups to complete the domino chain as quickly as possible. This adds excitement and focus!

Print the puzzle for the students to repeatedly see and connect written playground words with visuals, strengthening their ability to recognize and read new words.

Playground Small Cards for Elementary ESL

Print the small cards to help students connect visuals with vocabulary, making it easier for them to remember the playground new words like "slide," "seesaw," and "sandbox."

Encourage students to create sentences like "The girl is on the slide."

Students can use the card to say a sentence like "I like to play on the slide."

You can also have the students write questions using Where?



Unscrambling words helps students become more familiar with spelling patterns and expands their vocabulary. Write the playground words on the board but in a scrambled way.  Have the students find the small card that corresponds to each scrambled word.

The Monster spinner adds an element of surprise and excitement, motivating students to stay engaged as they eagerly wait for their turn to name the item they landed on and say a sentence or answer a question.

Student:  Number 3!

Teacher: What is number three?

Student:  a butterfly

Teacher: What color is it?

Student: pink and green, yellow and blue.
