Teaching clothes vocabulary is an important part of many ESL units for elementary students. Learners use clothing words when talking about daily routines, weather, and describing what people are wearing. Using visual materials like small cards and flashcards helps young English learners remember vocabulary faster and participate in interactive activities.

Printing these small cards to teach clothes units to elementary ESL (English as a Second Language) students can be an engaging and educational tool. Check this guide to making these cards effective and interactive.

Match clothes vocabulary for elementary students

Use the set of small cards to create this easy activity for identifying clothing. Cut the words out of each card and have them match to the corresponding clothing item. Each card included a clear picture of the clothing item and the English name of the item.

Labeling is another good exercise practice the new words to describe clothing. 

This can aid in vocabulary building and sentence construction.

Another activity is to show cards to students and ask them to name the items the person is wearing.

What Are You Wearing?

Students will write a description using the present continuous for any small card that you choose from more than any of the 600 cards that are in the resource. Start with the sentence structure: is wearing.

Sentence Building

Have the students write short descriptive texts using the possessive 's to talk about the who owns a clothing item. Learning to write improves their ability to communicate effectively in everyday situations. This kind of activity helps students learn and remember the names of various clothing items. They can add colors, patterns, and sizes words.

 Here is another example to write personal identification description texts for what others are wearing.

Speaking

 Students will say what the person on the card is wearing.

Teaching clothes vocabulary helps elementary English language learners describe what people wear in everyday situations. Flashcards are an effective way to introduce new vocabulary because students can connect the picture with the word while practicing pronunciation and speaking.

Clothes Vocabulary Flashcards

Flashcards help introduce clothing vocabulary through visual learning.

Students will identify and sort the ESL clothes vocabulary flashcards by color. Review the colors on the board by drawing a color splotch and having the stduents say the name.

Have the students say what they have sorted: a brown hat!

Point to different clothing item and ask: What color is the blouse?
Students: red! It’s red.
Teacher: What color are the shoes?
Students: They are pink and yellow.

Word Recognition and Vocabulary Review

Flashcards can also be used for vocabulary review games.

More vocabulary practice is to make a chart. Place several people flashcards on the board and make a chart with several clothing items. Have the stduents come and check which clothes the person is wearing and write to the ones the person isn’t wearing.

Prepositions Review

Let’s review prepositions.
Teacher: Where is the boy?
Stuents: He’s in the boot.

To talk about possession using have in affirmative or negative.
Teacher: Who has a pink hat?
Students: Number 8.
Teacher: Number 1 has a green hat.
Students: Number 2 has a brown hat.

Talk about possession in plural and identify the owner of the hats.

Teacher: Who has a purple hat?
Stuents: Number 6 and 12.
Teacher: Number 10 and 11 have green hats.
Stuents: Number 8 and 9 have pink hats!

Possessive adjectives His and her. Describing possession. 

Place two similar flashcards on the board to contrast what the people are wearing.

Teacher: This is his T-shirt!
Students: This is her T-shirt!

More on asking questions about possession

Are these your boots?

Students: Yes, they are.

Use the flashcards to help the students express likes or dislikes. 

Ask students about their opinion: Do you like jackets?

Start talking about possessives.

 Ask questions using the possessive pronouns: Whose shoe is this?

Students: The shoe is hers.

Clothes Vocabulary Speaking Activity

To describe what one is wearing using the present continuous tense. Place several flashcards on the board and ask what they are wearing using descriptive adjectives such as colors.

Students: She is wearing a black dress.

To describe what people are wearing as the same.

 Place similar clothing items on the flashcards and have them identify which one it is. Students will answer questions with what.

Teacher: What are they wearing?

Students: a green dress!

Play Who am I? or Guess who? 

I choose several pictures of people all wearing jeans. Teacher: I am wearing blue jeans, blue t-shirt and white sneakers.
Students: You are number 4.

Relate the clothes to a part of the body.

I wear gloves on my hands.

I wear boots on my feet.

I wear a hat on my head.

These Body Unit games help elementary English language learners review body vocabulary through fun, interactive play. The activities target speaking, listening, movement, and collaboration — perfect for classroom centers, small groups, or whole-class practice.

Games like matching, board play, and movement activities provide repeated exposure to vocabulary while supporting communication skills in meaningful contexts.

Playing with these printable games will encourage interaction among your students. It promotes communication in the target language, where stduents sit to practice speaking and listening in a fun environment.Find many games to write in your lesson plan format for the english class.

Board and Speaking Games

Print the board game layout with spaces that players move around. There are cards with questions corresponding to the color the player xan land on. Assemble the tokens beforehand. The players take turns rolling the dice and moving around third colored token on the game board according to the number rolled. The student will answer the question on the card of the color landed in order to have another turn to play.

Domino Game

Students match body vocabulary words to corresponding images, reinforcing word recognition and pronunciation.

Body parts Domino has the objective to help the players learn and associate the word with the corresponding body parts through the matching game. Each domino tile will have two halves. One half will show a picture of a body part, and the other half will show the word of a different body part.

Shuffle the domino tiles and distribute them evenly among players. Player 1 will place one domino tile face up on the table to start the game. A domino tile can be placed to match the pciuture or the word.  The first player to use all their domino tiles wins the game.

Printable letter tiles. 

Students use letter tiles to build and spell body part vocabulary words. This hands-on activity strengthens spelling awareness and reinforces word recognition in a tactile, engaging way.

Students can:  Build words from picture prompts,  Correct scrambled words,  Race in teams to spell correctly,  Say each word aloud after building it

This game combines visual aids with spelling practice. Students can use to spell out the names of the body parts.  Ensure that you make multiple copies for groups of students. Print the tiles on cardstock. Cut the tiles and place them in ziplock bags.

Matching Activity

Students match words to pictures individually or in small groups.

For interactive learning print this body items picture mat and the words to allow the students to work collaboratively or independently.

Body Parts Puzzle Activity

Students assemble vocabulary puzzles by matching body part words with their corresponding images. This activity encourages problem-solving while reinforcing spelling and word recognition.

Students can also use the body part puzzle to aid visual learners. A Way to learn body part vocabulary in an engaging and hands-on way.

I love to have diverse activities worksheets for the diverse students in class who have different learning styles. This set comes in two parts, one is a basic match and the other is to complete how the body parts are related to many verbs that perform an action.

Combine reading + comprehension tasks

The cute monsters can be adapted to different age groups and tailored to their learning level, making them useful for differentiated instruction. Play Guess Who? With pairs or have students fill in the worksheet by identifying the Monsters in each category.

There is a set of sorting the monster by cutting and pasting in the corresponding category.

The worksheets can have your students work at their own pace, such as matching and then cutting and pasting the corresponding phrase. It is a good practice of imperatives with the body vocabulary.

 Move to writing and sentence creation

Many Worksheets often include activities that promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Any worksheet can be used to write a short physical description of a character or person.

Some grammar. Change negative sentnces to affirmative according to the physical body types.

Promote reading skills and assemble a book using the worksheet by putting the paragraph next to each picture.
