School Places, Subjects and Time for ESL
The School Subjects product keeps getting bigger! (405 pages)
Watch the video with the complete resource:
Teaching school places, subjects, and time helps elementary ESL students describe their daily school routine using real-life language. By combining vocabulary and speaking activities, students learn how to talk about where they are and what they do during the school day.
Use the school places flashcards to teach the new words.
Place
all the school places flashcards on the board to introduce to the class. Have
them say which ones are in their school.
Teacher: Cafeteria!
Students: YES!
Teacher: Gym!
Students: NO!
Hand
in the School places flashcards to several students and have them come to the
front.
Teacher: Where are you?
Students: I am in the music room.
Teacher: Where are you?
Students: I am in the Science Lab.
Play a game. Hand in the school places flashcards to all the
students in the class. They can’t show it to anybody.
Teacher: Maria, are you in the library ?
Maria: No, I am not. I am at the playground.
(shows it to the class).
Then, it’s Maria’s turn to
ask another student the question. The game keeps going until all then cards are
shown to the class
Have
the students identify the school subjects and where
they take place in their school.
Teacher: Where do you have Art?
Students: in the art room!
Teacher: Where do you have I.T?
Students: in the computer room!
Have the students make more
sentences.
Talk
about where the places
are using prepositions and the flashcards.
Teacher: Where is the Library?
Students: It is next to the water fountain.
Teacher: Where is the water fountain?
Students: It is between the library and the
playground.
Have
the students write similar sentences of their school setting.
Practice “Where Are You?” Questions
Place
this set of flashcards on the board and ask students questions.
Teacher: Where is she?
Students: She is in the Library.
Teacher: Where are they?
Students: They are in the cafeteria.
Have
the students write these sentences on their notebooks.
Play a Speaking or Board Game
I
also made another game board for this
specific grammar point.
Each
player gets a student card as a marker. I placed a clip behind each one to make
them stand. The first students throws the die and He/She has to answer: Where
are you ?
Teacher: Where are you?
Students: I am in the computer room.
Create a School Timetable
Now
ask students where they are and at what time.
Teacher: Where are they at twenty to nine?
Students: They are in the computer room.
Teacher: Where is he at eleven o’clock?
Students: He is in the Science Lab.
Place
the noun flashcards on the board
and ask students questions.
Teacher: Where is the palette?
Students: It is in the Art room.
Place
the art room flashcard on or next to the palette. Continue with the rest of the
nouns.

Watch the video with the complete resource:
Teaching school subjects and time helps elementary ESL students talk about their daily schedule and routines. By combining subjects, days of the week, and time expressions, students can use English in meaningful, real-life situations.
This is
the link for the TIME cards and more.
Create a Timetable with Subjects and Time
Start by creating a timetable
on the board with the words that they already know from previous lessons such
as the subjects, the days of the week and the time. Use the flashcards.
Ask
questions:
Teacher: When do you have Math?
Students: On Monday and Wednesday.
Teacher: What time do you have Math?
Students: at 9 o’clock.
Teacher: You have Math on Monday and Wednesday at 9 o’clock.
Have the
students make sentences as you assign a subject.
Marcos: When do you have Music?
Students: I have Music on Tuesday at a quarter past one.
Ask and Answer Questions About Schedules
Where are you? Have the
students where they are and other people at a specific time using the analog
clock.
Teacher: Where are you at 10:25?
Students: I am in Math class.
Teacher: Where is Lily at 11:40?
Students: she is in Writing
class.
Teacher: Where are James and Frank at
1:30?
Students: They are in P.E.
School
starts and ends.
Introduce the words start and finish using the flashcards.
Teacher: What time does school start?
Students: It starts at 8 o’clock.
Teacher: What time does school finish?
Students: It finishes at half past three.
Build Full Sentences with Time Expressions
Use the flashcards on the board to make more examples for
sentences. Have the students make more sentences on their notebooks.
Play a Timetable Game Board
And for more practice make a game board.
I found this cute
clip art for game boards. It reminded me of Monopoly. I made a basic board ,each
color on the board has its own cards to complete the task in order to move to
other end.
If the student lands on the green space, he/she reads the
question on the green space and answer looking at the first green card on the
pile.
And
so on.
Teaching people and places together helps students understand how language is used in real-life situations. It allows them to describe where people are and what they do, improving both vocabulary and communication skills. Watch the video with the complete resource:
Teaching school subjects and related nouns helps elementary ESL students expand vocabulary and understand how words are connected. By linking subjects with classroom objects and concepts, students develop stronger word associations and improve communication skills.
Introduce School Subjects and Nouns with Flashcards
More flashcards are here to relate the school subjects from last blog post to the nouns.Place the subject flashcard on the board and then have the students find the noun flashcards related to that subject. This is the MATH example as in a mind map. There are also classroom objects flashcards that go with the subjects.
Build a Mind Map on the Board
Present Each Subject with Related Vocabulary, asi in this case, History subject.
Match Nouns to School Subjects of the the P.E. subject.
Here is the Religion subject presentation.
Here is the Physics subject presentation.
Here is the Music subject presentation.
Here is the Chemistry subject presentation.
Here is the Geograhy subject presentation.
Here is the Biology subject presentation.
Here is the Art subject presentation.
Place a school subject flashcard on the board and
start adding all the nouns that relate to that specific subject. Do the same
with all the subjects.
Play Guess the
subject.
Place several noun flashcards on the board. Have the
students guess to which subject the flashcards correspond.
Play Bingo with all
the flashcards. Place them on the board. Have the
students select only six of them and write them down on their notebook. Start
calling the words and remove them and place them on the wall or door to show
students which one you have called so they can cross the word out. The winner
is the first to cross out all the words.
I made small cards Subject/Noun to match.

School Subjects for Elementary ESL
Here’s the link to the resource for Teaching English in the Primary School: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/School-Subjects-People-and-Places-for-ESL-4548123
Watch the video with the complete resource:
Teaching school subjects vocabulary helps elementary ESL students talk about their daily routines and school life. Using flashcards, timetables, and speaking activities allows students to practice language in meaningful, real-life contexts.
Introduce School Subjects with Flashcards
Start by introducing the
School Subjects.Students should be able to name all the vocabulary learned in the unit.
I made a larger set using
pictures for older kids.
Brainstorm Vocabulary by Subject
Do your favorite school subject brainstorm words on the
board as an example. Tell your students that your favorite subject is ART. Than
start writing words that relate to that subject. Have students help you, add
some drawings as well.
I also made a worksheet
for students to do their art work.
Review the days of the week.
Hand in the card in random to seven students that will come to the front. They have to arrange themselves in order.
Ask questions. Teacher: What day is it ?
Student: It’s Monday!
Teacher: Tuesday, come to the front. Show your card.
Teacher: Ursula, What is your favorite day of the week ?
Ursula: It’s Wednesday. (the students with the card shows it to the class).
Create a School Timetable
Then
have the students place the cards on the board in order as a heading. Hold each
subject flashcard and ask questions.
Teacher: When do you have Geography?
Students: We have Geography on Thursday.
(place the flashcards under Thursday) Continue with all the flashcards.
Teacher: When is the Math class?
Students: It’s on Monday.
Have
students create their own timetable on their notebooks. They show and tell to
the class.
Students: The Spanish
class is on Tuesday.
Express Likes and Dislikes
Have
students express their likes and dislikes for the school subjects. Place all
the subjects on the board and as they express their preference write their
name.
Students: I like Geography. I don’t like
Math.
Contrast
easy and difficult.
Teacher: Do you like Science?
Raise your hand if the answer is yes !
Students: YES!
Teacher: Science is easy for you.
Teacher: Do you like Science? Raise
your hand if the answer is NO !
Students: NO!
Teacher: Science is difficult for you.
Game: What is the subject ?
Write the list of the subjects that you are
working on a piece of paper. Place the subjects can in a can. I suggest that
you make puppets which are easier to pull out. Tell the students that they are
going to pick a card or puppet from the can. Have the students line up as they
hear the subject word.
Teacher: Biology! Math!
Check that they are lined up correctly as you
collect all the subject cards or puppets.
Combining places, subjects, and time helps students use English in real-life situations. It allows them to describe their daily routine, ask questions, and communicate more effectively.Go to the blog post: https://eflelementaryresources.blogspot.com/2019/05/school-places-subjects-and-time-for-esl.html
